Boise State will try to remain undefeated and avenge a heartbreaking loss from a year ago when the Broncos host Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference matchup on the Smurf Turf at Bronco Stadium.

The Broncos, long known for their powerful offense, have relied on their defense this season as they rank seventh in the nation in points allowed (11.2 per game), limiting the opposition to seven points or less in four of their five games. On Saturday, Boise State went to Southern Mississippi and scored a 24-7 non-conference win as 10-point favorites, getting three touchdown passes from QB Kellen Moore, all in the second quarter. Moore has completed 71.3 percent of his throws for 1,339 yards, 10 TDs and three INTs.

Hawaii has won two straight, including a 24-14 home win Saturday over Louisiana Tech as a 7½-point favorite, forcing four turnovers and getting 224 passing yards and two TDs from QB Inoke Funaki. The last time the Warriors left the islands, they stunned then 22nd-ranked Fresno State 32-29 in overtime as a 21-point underdog, forcing six turnovers in beating a ranked opponent on the road for the first time ever.

These schools were both undefeated when they hooked up in Hawaii on Nov. 23, and the Warriors prevailed 39-27 as a 2½-point home chalk, outgaining Boise State 574-323. That result snapped a six-game Boise State winning streak in this series (4-2 ATS). In addition, the Broncos had scored at least 41 points in five straight games against Hawaii prior to last season.

The Warriors are in ATS slumps of 2-5 overall, 1-5 on the highway, 2-6 on Fridays and 8-19 against teams with a winning record, but they are 5-2-1 in their last eight October contests. The Broncos are on positive ATS runs of 7-3 overall, 5-1 in WAC contests, 8-2 on Fridays, 38-16-1 on the Smurf Turf and 39-19 following a spread-cover.

Hawaii is getting outscored by an average of nine points per game this season (30-21) and outgained by an average of 38 yards per contest (370-332). On the flip side, Boise’s stout defense is supported by an offense that nets 33.6 points and 432.2 total yards per game.

Hawaii is on over runs of 21-8-1 following a spread-cover and 19-7-1 in October, but the under is 9-2 in its last 11 overall and 6-1 in its last seven WAC contests. For Boise, the under is 7-3 in its last 10 overall, 5-1 in its last six conference games and 5-1 in its last six after a spread-cover.

Finally, the over is 4-2 in this rivalry dating back to 2002 (2-1 at Boise State).

Hawaii beat this team 39-27 last year at home. You remember that game? That was in Hawaii and it was for the Conference Championship. Heck, I am a huge dog bettor but this is exactly why I am staying away from this game. After all, let me ask you a question. You want to lay 24 points to a Hawaii team that just won outright at Fresno State in overtime as 3 touchdown dogs? Or against a Hawaii team that covered against a Louisiana Tech taem and seems to be getting things figured out? Or, do you want to bet against Boise State who is fired up from last year's conference loss and plays this Hawaii team on their blue turf? If anything, I think Boise will take an early lead and I expect Hawaii to come back in the second half as they are still a young team and will look to get settled in by the second half. Boise State has covered their last 3 including winning at Southern Miss and covering a tough spread in which I think Vegas expected Boise State to win but hit the cover. Yet, the Broncos managed to cover that ballgame. Something interesting you can note is that Hawaii has covered the last 3 times these 2 teams have played and Boise State has covered the last 5 times before that. The public is on the over to a tune of 75% while just 25% is on the under. So, if you are looking to fade the pubilc here, the under would be a smart play. In fact, that will be my comp play today. As remember, in a conference game, defense is much more likely to take precedence. Of course, having said that, if you think Hawaii is going to be a strong play, you would lean over. But, given that Boise State has revenge and it's a conference game, I think this game shadows their strengths. Thus, my comp pick here is on the under. Analysis:
****4 UNIT WAC GAME OF THE YEAR****



During the summer, there were three games that really stood out to me. They were Ohio State/Wisconsin, Florida/LSU and this one. So far, I'm 2-0 +7 units on those game and I go for the sweep tonight. This is a HUGE revenge game for Boise State. Last year Boise was beaten out by Hawaii for the WAC crown in their final regular-season game, losing 39-27. Head coach Chris Peterson is a huge believer in the Ric Flair-like motto to be the champs, you must first beat the champs and he's been preaching that to his team all week long. Boise has one of the best defenses in the country. Boise State ranks seventh in the nation in scoring defense, allowing an average of 11.2 points. The Broncos have given up seven points or fewer in four of their five games. And we all know that the Broncos pour on the points at home on the Smurf Turf.



But the reason I really love this game is because everything worked out for us. This spread should be around 35 but we got lucky because Hawaii is on a two-game winning streak coming into this matchup. However, looking closer into the wins and we find they aren't very impressive. La Tech is awful on the road and we now realize that Fresno State was vastly overrated at the start of the year. But because of those two wins, we get a nice 23.5 point spread here, much lower than where I think this number should be. Colt Brennan and the Rainbows ripped this defense last year for close to 600 yards and that's not good news for new starting quarterback Inoke Funaki. Funaki has led Hawaii to the two straight wins but he's in for a rude awakening tonight against a very stout Boise defense that will pressure him all game long and force him into turning the ball over.



We have the much better team at home where they hardly ever lose in a huge revenge spot. That's good enough for me to make Boise State my WAC Game of the Year.

HAWAII vs. BOISE ST.

No. 15 Boise tries to remain undefeated as the defense has been the highlight and suprise of this season coming off yet another outstanding game on defense. The Broncos (5-0, 1-0) were beaten out by Hawaii for the WAC crown in their final regular-season game last year losing 39-27 on Nov. 23 and that was against quarterback Colt Brennan and a Hawaii offense that averaged 43.3 points per game in 2007. Now Brennan has moved on to the NFL, Hawaii is 3-3 overall and the Broncos have been shutting down opposing offenses this season. Boise State ranks seventh in the nation in scoring defense allowing an average of 11.2 points per game. The Broncos have given up seven points or fewer in four of their five games. For the Broncos, their redshirt freshman quaterback has completed 71.5 percent of his passes for 1,335 yards and 10 touchdowns with only three interceptions.The Warriors also have a first-year starter at quarterback in Inoke Funaki who has helped them win two straight. The junior passed for two TDs and ran for 79 yards in a 25-17 victory over then-No. 22 Fresno State on Oct. 4 and threw two more TDs in a 26-14 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday night. The Broncons will have a tough time with Warriors quraterback Funaki who is hard to stop. Funaki threw for a career-high 224 yards against Louisiana Tech and also picked up his first career rushing touchdown. He is a young quarterback but he's got something special and is just putting the ball on the money now. His talent and the team picking up confidence in the last two games should keep Hawaii within the number.

The Rainbows are not the same team we saw last year upend the Broncos. In fact, the Warriors are a running team, and believe it or not and will try to control the ball and the clock when they make the visit to Boise Friday evening. We won't put too much stock in the Warriors victory over the Broncos last season, as their has been too much turnover since. However, this year's Rainbow team is more prone to run the ball as opposed to last year's squad. And the oddsmaker's have yet to catch up as witnessed by the Warriors 1-3 o/u on record on the season, with the lone over, an overtime slugfest with Fresno. With revenge on their minds the Broncos should come into this game focused. But last week's game against So Miss. was a physical one, so I would not be surprised to see the Broncos come out a little sluggish making it hard to live up to expectations. The under is 8-0 in Warrior's games following a SU win and 5-0 in their last 5 on turf. The Broncos have not lived up to expectations recently with the under going 7-3 in their last 10 overall. Play on the Under for 2 units.

At 8:00pm Hawaii travels to the “Smurf Turf” in hopes of 2 straight vs. #15 Boise State….but not so fast. Boise State is in a great spot tonight. Lets be clear, Hawaii’s offense is simply not what it used to be. They will still spread the ball out with their offensive scheme, but if you don’t have the weapons what good is it? Boise State is on national television at home, they are playing with revenge, and they’re catching Hawaii off of 2 straight wins.
