Americans and America

this is not to create controversy, i just want to know peoples opinion on why? when the word americans or america is mentioned everyone thinks rigth away USA or people from USA, when in fact everyone from this continent are americans(this includes news all over the world. google,wikipedia in fact anything that you research with americans or america will give you the same result USA).
And like i said this thread is just to know peoples opinion, nothing else<><>

Probably because we are the only country that uses America in the name of our country. United States of America. I never heard any latino or Canadian refer to themselves as Americans. Like me they are proud of being what they are. I am an American or would it be PC if we started calling ourselves Staters?

No, you're not. America / American == USA. Yes, I know the continents are referred to as the americas, but no Brazilian has ever called themselves an American. No, it's not fair, but neither is life. The whole world knows this, get over it.

Its not a matter of 'the World knows this/get it over with' , I can mention a gazillion situations that the World knows yet it doesn't make them right.

The problem is simply this, it became the custom for the US to call themselves Americans........the World took that and that left the rest of 'Americans' to wonder how in the hell someone took over the name of the Continent for themselves.

It is the only example (save for Australia of course but that is different) where a country (who is not even the biggest country in the Continent) takes over the name of the continent.

Africans, Europeans or Asians don't have this problem so it leaves just the American countries (or how would you call countries that are located in America????????) with this problem

Funny thing is, most legal documents and Goverment related stuff says US Citizens. They know better.

Would love to see a sign in US Customs that says ¨Americans¨.
