DAVIE —
With the NFL under intense scrutiny for how it disciplines players, the Dolphins wasted no time suspending defensive end Derrick Shelby after he was arrested at a night club this weekend.
Shelby — arrested at 2:30 a.m. Saturday at a Fort Lauderdale club on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest without violence — was suspended indefinitely by the team Monday.
The suspension came less than an hour after police released a report with some damning allegations.
Shelby faces only misdemeanor charges, but the report said he was thrown out of Cyn Nightclub, located at 111 SW 2nd Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, for “touching females” without their permission.Police ultimately stunned him three times with a Taser while arresting him.
The report said that when an officer told Shelby to leave, he refused and said, “What are you going to do?” Police said Shelby, who then began “photographing and taping” the officer, appeared intoxicated.
When police told Shelby he was under arrest for trespassing he “began pushing away from officers and took an aggressive fighting stance,” the report said.
Police allege that after Shelby, 25, was placed on the ground, he was “actively resisting” and bracing his arms so police couldn’t cuff him. After he was Tasered three times, he was taken to Broward General Hospital and then to police headquarters.
Shelby’s attorney, Daniel Rosenberg, told the Palm Beach Post on Sunday that Shelby will plead not guilty. Rosenberg accused the police of using excessive force.
Shelby’s booking mug shows that he had a cut lip and bruised face.
“When you see charges of resisting without violence and you see photos like that, there’s a lot of conflicting information,” Rosenberg said.
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said the team is still gathering information but he felt an indefinite suspension was warranted.
“It’s important for everybody that represents the Miami Dolphins — players, staff members — to represent the organization the right way on and off the field,” he said.
Shelby — 6-foot-2, 282 pounds — is a key reserve in Miami’s defensive line rotation and was having his best season since signing with the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie out of the University of Utah in 2012.
He already has two sacks and three quarterback hurries this year. Losing his pass-rushing ability could hurt the Dolphins if he is unavailable when they face upper-echelon quarterbacks the next two weeks in Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Chicago’s Jay Cutler.
The Dolphins already were without defensive end Dion Jordan, the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s draft, who was suspended by the NFL for the first six games because he failed two drug tests.
Defensive end Terrence Fede, a seventh-round pick out of Marist College this spring, likely will take Shelby’s place in the rotation behind starters Cam Wake and Olivier Vernon.
Undrafted rookie linebacker Chris McCain might also be used as a pass rusher.
Dolphins defensive tackle Jared Odrick said Monday that he spoke to Shelby, who expressed regret over the incident. But Odrick said people shouldn’t rush to judgment.
“Obviously I give my condolences to any victims of the situation, but as of right now I only saw Shelby’s face beat up,” Odrick said.
“Any time when the guys — especially a guy like Derrick — put something you’ve worked so hard at into jeopardy, whether you meant to or not, it’s tough,” Odrick said.
Odrick said NFL players have to be especially careful in public.
“By being the professional football players that we are and being big and black, we have to uphold a standard on and off the field, in and outside of the building more than anybody else in society,” Odrick said. “That’s something we’re going to have to accept.”

I'm just hoping that they have a Quarterback controversy like the J-E-T-S have going on right now
