Why is it 50 years ago a guy could pitch every 3 days for 8/9 innings for a whole season yet these days if a guy does it once in the post season he blows? The best part is the managers keep throwing them out there.. +150 I am not complaining, only hope they don't blow it now.. Just hard to understand with today's education and technology why guys cant do this yet years ago they did ALL the time??

Any thoughts?

copy/paste from an article

"It's a convergence of factors. First, hitters are generally better all around; you have fewer glove guys on a team so there are fewer free outs (having the DH contributes here as well). Second, we have a ton of data about how pitcher usage affects injury risk. Pitchers, particularly young pitchers, who have heavy workloads tend to get injured at a higher rate than those whose workload is managed.

There will always be exceptions but teams don't have the benefit of hindsight. It's impossible to know ahead of time if a young pitcher is going to become Mark Prior or Bob Gibson, Doc Gooden or Roger Clemens. We don't have the benefit of hindsight. We can't weed out the ones who can handle high pitch counts from the ones who can't with anything approaching 100% certainty. So the smart thing to do is manage workloads as well as possible to balance risk vs. reward.

Lastly, the pitchers you mentioned are hardly your average starters. They are the outliers, the names we remember because they were durable and outstanding for many years, thereby ensuring their place in public memory. If you dug deeper into baseball history, you'd find legions of young pitchers subjected to heavy workloads who fell apart during that period. We've just forgotten about them because they did not endure."

its easy to criticize after the fact. If they won (which can still happen), people will say what a great move it was.

Good question. Perhaps they're not conditioned to go 8/9 innings every 3 days. Different regimen these days I guess. You would think today's athlete should be able to handle the load . . .

Kershaw has some demons to exorcise. Money in the reg season and a fail in the postseason. He pitched well but one dinger is portably going to undo him/

How exactly did Kershaw "blow"

He was dominate for most the game and only allowed 4 hits. His team just couldn't capitalize on the many oppurtunities they had.

they wont even have a baserunner... can't believe another 7th inning meltdown... this has nothing to do with Kershaw or 3 days rest.... he was great today... dodgers had numerous chances to put them away and failed...

not meant to criticize, game is never over till its over.. just makes no sense. The issue mentioned above about better hitters I can understand but aren't today's pitchers, bigger, better and stronger?

Just seems odd, same thing with pitch counts.. kershaw was approaching 100 and that seems like such a key pitch count. Then in the previous at bat with LAD as soon as Miller began to struggle you would have thought mgr would have been out with a quick hook as is often soon... St Louis very lucky today 4 hits 3 runs, if it holds up tuff loss for LA..

Kershaw still pitched a hell of a game Donny baseball can't leave the decision up to Kershaw though should of pinch hit for him in the 7th and went to the pen....any pitcher in that situation is going to want to finish the game. Its up to the manager to make the change. Ecspecially on short rest on the road!!

3 run HR .. its that simple.. i agree he was dominate but the end result could be a L for him on 3 days

his lifetime #'s vs st louis not very good either

CLAYTON KERSHAW vs. ST LOUIS since 1997
KERSHAW is 5-8 when starting against ST LOUIS with an ERA of 4.11 and a WHIP of 1.298.
His team's record is 8-10 (-5.0 units) in these starts. The UNDER is 8-9. (-2.0 units)

Kershaw is GREAt PITCHER. Mattingly made too many mistakes in the post season.

Dodgers are great in the NL west. Beat up on shitty teams with shitty pitching. They met their match with the cardinals.

Icing on the cake is Giants winning in the next game...

kershaw did win last year on 3 days, but the fact is post season baseball all that matters is the W or L and he got the L .. just find it interesting that todays athlete much more often than not, can not get it done on 3 days..
