Cigar won 19 of 33 career starts and earned just shy of $10 million during his career career.


Cigar, the two-time Horse of the Year whose 16-race winning streak was among the top feats in racing history, died early Wednesday after surgery, according to multiple media reports.


Trainer Bill Mott confirmed the death of Cigar, 24, in a text message to the Daily Racing Form.


Cigar, who was inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in 2002, who won 19 of 33 career starts and established an earnings record of $9,999,815.


Among his titles were the 1995 Breeders' Cup Classic and the 1996 Dubai World Cup.


Cigar, the son of Palace Music and Solar Slew, was owned by the late Allen Paulson and his wife, Madeline. The horse had lived at Kentucky Horse Park after he retired in 1996.

Saw him run at Suffolk Downs. Great horse, indeed. Gelding if I remember correctly.
