No matter how far away the Knicks may be from their elusive third NBA championship, Carmelo Anthony still thinks about the day he will hold the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
“I dream,” Anthony said Thursday with a smile. “I have my moments. I dream. Sometimes that dream is very clear, and sometimes it’s cloudier. That’s just how life goes.
“But I’m just taking it one day at a time until that time comes.”
Anthony, who was speaking in Manhattan at his second annual Tools for Teachers Initiative, added the possibility of winning a championship in New York meant more to him than if he had chosen to leave for one of the several stops he made on his free-agency tour in July.
“It wouldn’t have been the same,” he said. “It wouldn’t have been the same going somewhere else and winning a championship.
“I don’t think there would be a better feeling than winning one here, and the impact that would have.”
When Anthony chose to re-sign with the Knicks this summer, he was realistic about the fact the Knicks — who are hoping to bring in significant help for their star forward via free agency next summer — weren’t going to be able to truly compete for a championship this season with the Cavs and Bulls, the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.
But that didn’t stop him from saying before the start of preseason the Knicks would make the playoffs, a stance he said he still holds. And, as the Knicks are just beginning what likely will be a lengthy learning curve under new coach Derek Fisher — particularly with regards to the intricacies of the triangle offense — Anthony is pleased with the team’s progress.
“I think we’ve come a long way, from the first day up until now,” he said. “We still have a ways to go, but we’re just taking it one day at a time right now.”
Anthony said more than 4,000 children would benefit from the school supplies handed out to the roughly 250 teachers from all five boroughs in attendance at Thursday’s event.
“I think people want to help the kids and want to help the youth, and sometimes don’t know how to go about that,” Anthony said.
“So [this] was an easy initiative to be a part of, and I knew that if I can help the teachers being involved with them and give them the supplies they need, [it would help].
“It’s the little things. Pencils, Elmer’s glue and notebooks and stuff like that, things people might take for granted. Those things change people’s lives.”
