After almost 20 years of smoking I had quit for 4 months but I've started back again. How did you kick it?

Just put them down and quit about 10 years ago

The wife won't quit but after 3 months didn't even notice the packs laying around the house

If you want to quit you can do it

To me it was all mental once I really said it's time to stop I did

More about quitting a lifestyle than just quitting smoking. I smoked 2 packs a day, sat in front of a TV set like a slug, and had a package of Chips Ahoy in my lap. Fat, lazy, and out of shape. Quit smoking mostly because I boldly told my friends I was and none of them thought I could. Really became a pride thing to show them wrong initialy. Truth is I enjoyed smoking. Perhaps this was the wrong motivational tool but it worked for me.

The real secret to my success was I began to take pride in myself in doing this. I joined a gym and started eating healthy. I dropped weight and felt strong. Put the chips ahoy down and got out of the recliner. I had to change much more than just stop smoking.

If you were able to quit for 4 months you can quit for life. Everything about addiction centers around triggers and coping mechanisms. Remove yourself from the things that you associate with with your addiction. Find new habits. Hopefully healthy ones.

Tell yourself if you don't, you'll die 10 years earlier than expected. If I were a smoker, that would pretty much do it for me.

My daughter (for a school project) wrote me a letter asking me to quit.

That was motivation enough.

Smoked a pack a day when I started quitting. Cut down to 18 cigarettes a day the first week, 16 the second week and so on; took me two months to quit and was only mildly difficult.

+1. I decided I wanted to really quit. So I did. The only time I got the urge was in the first week or two when I had a few drinks. Lots of water helps too.

Started with the patch. Got down to 5 cigs a day. Stopped the patch, stayed at 5 cigs a day. Picked a day to stop completely and used nicotine gum. Been almost 4 years.

Thats good. Yeah, I would think that would do it for me. Don't have kids though. I enjoy smoking. I've smoked for 20 years. 41 is probably a good age to quit. I heard your lungs actually rebuild themselves after a while. Not sure if that's 100% accurate, but it sounds good.

quit for good when I was 39. Am 52 now, didn't want to be 50+ and hacking my guts out, picking tobacco out of my teeth and off my clothes. I did it by counting backwards (10 days without smoking, 20 days, 1 month etc) Worked

Disgusting habit, should be banned

I did it a dumb way by switching to Copenhagen chew. I got a lot more nicotine into my blood stream than with cigs, so I probably increased my nicotine dependency but at least I got over whatever the social part of smoking is. 3 weeks before my wedding date I quit tobacco cold turkey as surprise gift to my wife. Here's how it worked: 1st 3 days: pricklng, stinging sensations not much sleep, ineffective at work, felt I couldn't continue. The next 3 weeks or so were significantly better and I felt there was hope. After three months 90% of the urge was gone. 5 years later until today, still a minor nicotine need, but no big deal. I know I can never touch even a cigar again or it will all come back. If you get through the first 3 days it will get easier. The key: 3 DAYS, 3 WEEKS, 3 MONTHS.

Was smoking brand name Marlboro's 1-2 packs /day; always had cough; a lotta colds; decided to quit; put an opened pack of Marlboro Red on my dresser; every morning looked at that pack; told that pack :I am tougher than you; I will not smoke today." After about a month; gave the pack to a friend who smoked; never smoke again...just gotta be tough..jmho..gl..it really is worth quitting...

My neighbor got me smoking when I was 13.

Very tough to wrap your mind around your quit date. Just gotta pick it and be stronger than the temporary urge.....and the urge is only temporary

Ok, 3 days without smoking. Miss the stress-busting effects that smoking provided but otherwise ok.

I stole one of my fathers Pall Mall's when I was twelve, my first and only cigarette

I understand Pall Mall's are (were?) one of the strongest and worse cigarettes, so I guess I'm lucky that's what dad smoked

Been smoking since I was 12 years old ( kind of BS smoking ) but around 17 or so, started smoking about a pack a day.
Even though I did Stop once for 3 months ( Cold Turkey ) I went back because I lost both my Parents within a year. ( I know it's a bad excuse ) and no their Death was not smoking related

The one thing I do is I get a Lung test every year, it's like a Cat scan of some type. I think it's called a PFT
and knock on wood, it has been good results.

Anyway, I know I need to quit and Will some day... just not ready yet. It's a Bad habit I know.... I have a mindset that in 2 years to quit. Sounds stupid and it probably is.
Because why wait ?? But if I'm still around here in 2 years, check back with me.
