A youth football team in Georgia was winning a game 32-0 when 8-year-old Elijah Burrell intercepted a pass. He then returned the pick for a touchdown – his first ever – giving Elijah and the Lawrenceville Black Knights a 38-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the rules of the league state that no team can exceed 33-points in the spirit of the mercy rule.
The penalty for violating the rule? A $500 fine for the team, and a one-week suspension for the coach.
“He had no idea. This is his first year,” Elijah’s mother Brooke Burdett told CBS 46. “This was his first touchdown. He is an 8-year-old boy making a pick-six.”
Another parent on the team said the adults on the sideline attempted to instruct Elijah to not score, but were unable.
“We were literally telling him stop,” Chando John said. “It’s hard having an 8-year-old in flight think of anything other than I need to make a touchdown.”
Officials at the Gwinnett Football League did not speak on the CBS 46 story, and For The Win’s request for comment was not immediately returned.

When I read the title of the thread I thought the kid hot it big at the track. 33 points is a pretty arbitrary #. If I were the coach of the team he was playing next, I would tell him to show up

Guess when a team is up 25 they should fumble it in the end zone so other team can fall on it

Yeah that would be classic win like 77-49 really make the other team feel good

I'd rather lose 77-0

Why don't they just stop games when the margin gets to 32? I get what they are trying to do--some asshole coaches would run up the scores to make them feel like Bill belichick--but a $500 fine? Have a running clock or end the game.

Totally agree. If I was the coach I'd tell the league to go F themselves and ask where they think the money's going to come from.

Unbelievable

A state high school official was watching a state championship baseball game next to me a year or so ago--one of the four or five divisions they now have for baseball--and he muttered, "They just ought to give everyone a trophy when they are born now."
