HOUSTON -- Ryan Mallett will replace Ryan Fitzpatrick as the new starting quarterback of the Houston Texans, coach Bill O'Brien announced Wednesday.

"Watching Ryan (Mallett) in practice every day, I believe it's gotten better and better," said O'Brien, who told both quarterbacks of the news early Wednesday morning. "His huddle command, his knowledge of the offense, he's been in this system for four years. ... I think he's made a lot of progress whereas he's never played in a game or hasn't had many reps in a game. We're going to give him his shot to play."

The Texans' decision to bench Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of Ryan Mallett came after the veteran QB really had struggled in the team's last five games. Here's a look:

The Texans traded for Mallett in September, sending a draft pick to the New England Patriots. That pick is a conditional sixth-round pick on the condition that Mallett plays in 40 percent of the Texans' snaps this season.

Mallett, a third-round draft pick in 2011, spent the first three seasons of his career as a backup to Tom Brady with the Patriots. O'Brien was the Patriots' offensive coordinator that season before he left New England to be Penn State's head coach in 2012.

O'Brien said that upon his arrival in Houston this year, he saw a player who had "grown up" since he last saw him and that it was apparent that he had learned a lot from Brady.

"He has a much better knowledge of football and what it takes to be prepared," O'Brien said of Mallett. "Now it's time to put him out there and see what he can do."
Mallett's first start will come in Week 11 against the Cleveland Browns, who are led by Brian Hoyer -- another Brady backup.

Mallet is about as mobile as a statue, but his arm is 100 times better. O-line better step up and protect him.

Philip Rivers can attest to the importance of o-line . He was annihilated by the Dolphins defense. Like Fitz Rivers is going to be heavily criticized by the media but when an o-line gets annihilated even a great QB has no chance.

a 6th rd draft pick if Malet plays in 40% of the games. O'Brien trying to get his buddy that pick

Thanks GMR. That's not much for Mallet. I figured they got at least a 3rd rounder. I guess those other Patriots backups who were busts caught up to them (in the form of less trade value).

I was surprised they didn't make the move 4-5 weeks ago. Not sure what Mallett is but FitzP so awful. You got Hopkins and AJ on the outside playing with handcuffs on them with that QB.

Fitz should be carrying a clipboard and signaling in plays...just goes to show how low on quality QB's the NFL is at this time. Guy has sucked everywhere he has been and keeps landing new gigs.

I love Mallett. Think he'll be a top 10 QB. Was my draft steal that year.

A top 10 QB? The guy has a career passing record of 1 for 4 with an INT and cant move in the pocket to save his life. I remember that game when The Pats put him in. That was the last time he ever saw the field. I hope he makes it in Houston but saying that guy is a Top 10 QB is a heck of a reach.

It was unconscionable that O'Brien actually made Fitz the starter, instead of drafting Carr or signing Vick, or trading for Mallett in camp. That's a quality team that has now been held back simply by the QB position for the 2nd straight year. I think Mallett will be OK, but they should have traded for him early enough to start from the beginning of the season, not when it's too late.

Word is that Hou isn't even coming close to using the entire playbook because of Fitz's weak arm and not grasping the offense completely.
