I'm sure he will take the high road.

I wonder what Johnny Football will say

He definitely has gotta find some humor in it. I mean I know if I got benched in my FA year after playing terrible and it was gonna cost me 30 to 50million I'd be cracking up.

That type of $ is a tax headache anyway

Well, if Johnny came in and lit it up where Hoyer didn't, then there would be a problem.
At least Johnny Football came in with an established team and laid a complete egg.

I think they will keep starting Manziel if he is healthy so Hoyer is likely gonna need to go into free agency with his last 5-6 starts being atrocious.

I guess it is better if Manziel sucks but I'm not sure it'll really matter much for his market value.

Yeah but someone else being bad at their job doesn't necessarily mean you are good at yours. Usually in the NFL if you play terrible, they find someone else, then if he plays terrible they find someone else after him. I'd be surprised if the Browns wanna back Hoyer for next season.

Someone might though, only takes 1

Circumstance is crazy sometimes though. If Gordon doesn't get popped for smoking a J or whatever then maybe Hoyer has a solid year and gets Dalton $.

Used to be a Hoyer supporter but he's looking like a backup qb at best. Johnny is work in progress at best. Browns are screwed what ever they do.

If I had to bet it I'd probably bet on Manziel starting week 1 next year. They did spend a 1st rd pick on him.

Don't think they will draft QB 2 straight years.
I think you're probably right.....ugghhh, what a bad spot...

Brian Hoyer a better insurance policy for Bears, Jay Cutler

Brian Hoyer has experienced disparate facets of life as an NFL quarterback. He spent three seasons learning from the ultimate competitor in the Patriots’ Tom Brady. And he has both won and lost starting jobs to two knuckleheads – Johnny Manziel with the Browns in 2014 and Ryan Mallett with the Texans early last season.

Hoyer was a starter in Week 1 with the Texans last year and lost the job six minutes into the fourth quarter. He quarterbacked the Texans to a division-clinching victory in Week 17 and was all but out of a job six days later after a disastrous performance in the wild-card game against the Chiefs — four interceptions and a 13.7 passer rating in a 30-0 loss.Promoted Stories from sportsChatter

So all things considered, backing up Jay Cutler with the Bears is not a bad gig for the former undrafted free agent from Michigan State. In fact, Hoyer seems well-suited to play an under-appreciated role in the NFL — being the good soldier as a back up to an established quarterback, but still being prepared to lead a team into the playoffs and beyond.
“My role is to be ready if something happens to Jay,” Hoyer said. “And that’s the thing you realize in this league — you have to know what your role is and be really good at it.”

Hoyer is a willing back up who thinks like a starter — and has the resume to back it up. He is 15-11 as a starter in the NFL. He led the NFL in yards per completion (13.7) with the Browns in 2014 — when current Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains was his quarterback coach. His career-best 91.4 passer rating with the Texans last season (19 touchdowns, seven interceptions) ranked two spots below Cutler.
“If you don’t have that [starter’s] mentality, it’s like throwing the sheep to the wolves. This league will eat you alive,” Hoyer said. “I know I’ve proven I can do that. But [the Texans] were holding on to me and holding on to me and released me and the opportunities just kind of dried up.
“So this was the best opportunity that was available. And I’m excited to be here. It’s a great organization. A great coaching staff. Knowing the coordinator. Knowing the quarterback coach [Dave Ragone went also went to St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland]. You walk into the quarterback room from Day 1 and have a comfort level.”
That comfort level was a key factor in Hoyer’s decision to sign a one-year, $2 million contract with the Bears. “Dowell’’s doing a lot of things that are similar to what I was doing with him in Cleveland,” Hoyer said. “He’s also doing a little bit what [Adam] Gase did last year. And Adam worked under Josh McDaniels [Hoyer’s coordinator in New England]. There’s a lot of melting pot things I’m familiar with. So it’s a good fit.”
Hoyer gives the Bears a back-up with NFL experience. The Bears ended last season with second-year pro David Fales as Cutler’s back-up. Fales and Matt Blanchard are the other quarterbacks on the roster.
“I couldn’t ask for a better room in terms of not just physical ability, [but] you’ve got guys with different experiences,” Ragone said. “Guys with different personalities that blend well together. Guys that understand their role and — the biggest thing for — love to compete.”
At 30, Hoyer is trying to make the most of a difficult career situation after the debacle in the playoffs. “It was a terrible game,” he acknowledged. “But prior to that I had the best season I’ve ever had as a starter. One game isn’t going to define my career. If you have one great game and several poor ones after that — does that one [great] game define your career?
“So to me, I was just excited to get out here [Tuesday] and just play football. One game does not define me as a player or my career. I’m over that. I’ve learned from the mistakes and you just keep coming out and getting better every day. Unfortunately it ended [in Houston], but it opened a new door for me here and I’m going to make the most of it.”

CHICAGO – Maybe Bears coach John Fox was telling the truth after all.
Fox raised eyebrows on Monday when he refused to automatically anoint Jay Cutler the starter again when his thumb injury heals, but after watching Brian Hoyer (28-of-36 for 302 yards and two touchdowns) direct the offense in Chicago’s 17-14 victory over Detroit, the Bears may be better off with Cutler on the sidelines, for now.
However, you cannot pin all of the Bears’ woes on Cutler.
To be fair, Cutler played behind a leaky offensive line – particularly in the opener at Houston – and without the benefit of a run game prior to hurting the thumb in Houston, and then again versus Philadelphia. The Bears only truly established the ground attack when rookie Jordan Howard (111 rushing yards) replaced Jeremy Langford (ankle sprain) in Week 4. And, keep in mind, the Lions defense is poor.
But Cutler did not run the offense well prior to injury.
That cannot be disputed.
Over seven quarters, Cutler guided the offense to 25 total first downs – Cutler also committed three turnovers.
Compare that to Hoyer, whom in approximately nine quarters, has helped the Bears move the chains 49 times – Hoyer has one turnover in 2016.
Obviously, Hoyer, 30, is not the future. The Bears must solve their quarterback dilemma in the offseason, when Cutler’s contract becomes non-guaranteed. Chicago can open up $13 million in cap space if they trade or release Cutler before the 2017 season begins, but in order to do so, they have to find a suitable replacement.
For the time being, however, the Bears’ goal is to pile up victories, and Hoyer played a key role in the team picking up its first win of the year.
Forget about the playoffs, the Bears want to show steady growth from here on out. Laugh all you want, but the Bears could be 3-3 when they travel to Lambeau Field for a Thursday night showdown with Green Bay on Oct. 20.
Next week’s opponent, Indianapolis (1-3), is a hot mess. The Colts dropped a brutal game to Jacksonville in London, and now have to turn around – jetlagged and ragged – to host the Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium. NFL teams used to have their bye week after the London trip, but not this year; a scheduling quirk the Bears should exploit.
And then the Jaguars pay a visit to Soldier. For all the heart Jacksonville showed winning at Wembley Stadium, they are still Jacksonville. The Bears have to consider it a winnable game.
Hoyer did enough to earn another start. The days of Cutler having enough juice inside the organization to force himself back on the field, ready or not, are probably over. Don’t expect another Josh McCown situation circa 2013. Fox’s comments reinforced that new reality in Lake Forest.
