Sources tell ESPN.com that the Celtics and the Mavericks have an agreement in principle to send the All-Star point guard to Dallas for Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson and a future first- and second-round draft pick.
The possibility exists that other players will be added to the final deal, but a Rondo-to-the-Mavericks deal is expected to be completed Thursday night.
Rondo would join Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis, Tyson Chandler and Chandler Parsons in a high-octane starting five.
Las Vegas sports book operator CG Technology shortened Dallas' odds to win the NBA title Thursday, moving the Mavericks from 13-1 to 8-1 after news that the deal is close to being finalized broke.

The Mavericks' starting point guard trio of Jameer Nelson (33 games), Devin Harris (three games) and J.J. Barea (1 game) have ranked in the bottom of the league in several categories. On the other hand, Rajon Rondo leads the league with 10.8 assists per game.

Rondo, who is in the final year of his current contract, has left little doubt in recent months that he intends to test the market as a free agent in July. But sources say Dallas, amid growing concern about its point guard play and sensing the opportunity to acquire a top-flight player it has coveted for some time, is confident it could win over Rondo for the long-term.
Boston has the necessary trade exceptions to absorb all the salaries from Dallas while potentially generating a valuable $12.9 million trade exception (Rondo's 2014-15 salary) to help with future roster construction.
The Celtics were at the roster maximum of 15 before the trade and will need to part with additional players to absorb three from Dallas.
The Mavericks were one of several teams to express interest in Rondo. The Celtics also had talked to teams including the Sacramento Kings, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets about a potential deal, according to sources.
Rondo is averaging 8.3 points and 10.8 assists this season, his ninth in the league.

Atleast they got some decent draft picks from them. 1 Top seven guaranteed if I read it right. May not be until 2016.
Who knows if the other players will pan out to be anything worth keeping.

Other way around. It's top 7 protected, meaning they won't receive the pick if it falls inside the top 7, from 2016-2020. It's almost impossible for Boston to receive the Mavs' 2015 1st rounder as Dallas would have to miss the playoffs.

Ah, missed that. So the first rounder most likely is going to be in the 20-30 pick range?

Yeah, most likely. It's hard to see a scenario where Dallas ends up out of the playoffs in 2016 even if Rondo chooses not to reup.

I dunno about that. The west is stacked and Chandler/Dirk will be a year older. I could definitely see them missing the playoffs next year if things don't workout.

Celts got what they could but if they just dealt him 3-4 months ago, they would've got a bit more.

One of the best starting 5's I can ever remember..

Hyperbole?

I think it was a good gamble for the Mavs that Rondo can get back to his '09-12 form but I still don't have them getting out of rd 1.

B Wright wasn't a minor loss either, especially if Chandler has injuries flare up.

It's possible, but I think it's unlikely. I guess if Rondo walks and Ellis opts out and walks they have stress but I see the more likely scenario being Ellis opts and and re-signs and Chandler also re-signs for a team friendly deal. Rondo is the wildcard.

Rondo would be perfect for the Lakers. He doesn't shoot (Kobe and Nick Young have dibs on every shot) and he plays strong defense which is a huge weakness for LA. LA didn't want to give up their 1st round pick next year for Rondo. Don't blame them, but it seems like they should at least try during Kobe's last year or 2.
