If you have a sidewalk, do you shovel the snow off your sidewalk after it snows?

I was on FB the other day and a big argument was going on between neighborhood folks and their responsibility about shoveling the snow.

Guy was saying he fell and tore his ACL and sued the guy because he failed to shovel the snow on his sidewalk within 24 hours after the snowfall.

I throw the salt rocks on mine. Fuck people that sue because of their own stupidity though.

I thought the sidewalk was on the city or HOA, otherwise people are trespassing right? HOA rules are different though, if HOA rules say you have to then you have to. If you have an HOA you should ask them.

In Galena you have to shovel sidewalk from edge to edge within 24 hours after a measurable snowfall, or get a ticket after one warning.
Sidewalks are on city right of way, but must be shoveled by property owners.
So I think lawsuits go against the property owner.

You have 24 hours here as well. They will give you one warning if someone complains and if its not done then you will be ticketed. When I had my retail store I was on a main road and one old guy would walk on the sidewalk to the store. Well of course the plows woold put 5 feet of snow on the sidewalk and it would turn to ice. You would need 2 sticks of dynamite to remove it because it was so hard. The guy from the town gave me the option of removing it or sanding it. I would sand the ice and the guy would be pissed lol. Nice sanded 5 foot snow banks :o)

In Minnesota we just shoveled the walk and threw down some salt. Actually everyone in the neighborhood did, we even did it for the elderly or those who couldn't do it. I miss those days when neighbors were actually friends.

We get along just fine.

Yes! I am proud to say that I still live in Minnesota and that gesture of removing the elderly peoples snow is still in effect where I live. In fact, there is 2 other guys in our neighborhood that are willing to do it for anyone if someone is gone or isnt capable. Small town USA benefits are still going strong here. Minnesota Nice and Midwestern proud.

I don't either but I'm think maybe I should start doing it. There were a lot of women on the site bitching about walking the kids to school and not being able to use the sidewalk.

That's the advantage of living on a cul-de-sac nobody uses the sidewalk

Depending on where you live, you have to shovel whether you like it or not. What pisses me off is that a sidewalk can be on your property yet you need their permission to do something to it because it belongs to them. Yet if you don't shovel, they punish you because it is "your" sidewalk. They can't have it both ways but routinely do with things like this.

Yeah, we feel exactly the same here.
