"American Sniper" had a record-breaking weekend at the box office.
The Chris Kyle biopic, directed by Clint Eastwood, brought in more than $90 million during its nationwide opening.

"This is staggering. It's blockbuster numbers in January, the sort of numbers usually reserved for summer films and superhero movies," Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for Rentrak, told USA Today. "No one saw this coming. The film has been building an audience and blasting any projections all weekend."

"American Sniper," starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, is now the top-grossing film to premiere in January.
Previously "Avatar" held the title after bringing in $68 million during its opening weekend in 2010. It is also the top-grossing winter film, eclipsing the previous record holder, "The Passion of the Christ," which brought in nearly $84 million during its opening weekend in 2004. According to USA Today, Warner Bros., the production company behind the movie, estimated that "American Sniper" will make an additional $15 million over the long weekend.
"American Sniper," which has grossed nearly $119 million total, as it was released in just a few markets on Dec. 25, was further buoyed by the Oscar nominations it earned last week.
The film was nominated six awards, including best picture and a best actor nod for Cooper.

I tried to go Saturday night, and every showing was sold out. I've never seen the movie theater parking lot so packed since the place was built 6-7 years ago.

Here is what a friend texted me after going to see the movie Saturday afternoon:

There are no words for how Good that movie is. Silence. Not one person talked the entire time in a sold out show.

Movie Info

From director Clint Eastwood comes "American Sniper," starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. But there was much more to this true American hero than his skill with a rifle. U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend." However, his reputation is … More

The movie is good - not outstanding because the wife's acting sucked - the war scenes are moving - it's not a go USA movie - the movie shows all the problems of war - like all the fucked up soldiers

This movie kept me engaged partly due to Cooper exploring unknown territory. He bulked up, worked the southern drawl, and nailed the military part. It would have been cool if Eastwood could have made a brief appearance as a retired military consultant... I'm talking like a 10 second scene maybe. Maybe next time. Eastwood is gold man. Cooper too.

American Sniper kind of reminds me of the movie that's showing in the third act of Inglorious Basterds.

I thought the film was terrible. I'm a huge Clint Eastwood fan, but he really missed the mark on this one. The whole thing was highly offensive - particularly the two scenes with "The Butcher" using a drill. Talk about dehumanizing your enemy - if these guys showed up in the USA, are you telling me that people wouldn't be camped out on top of their houses fending off the invading army with their personal firearms? Of course they would, and people here in America would consider them heroes for defending their homeland.

Leaving the politics out of it, I just didn't think the film was well constructed at all. Gran Torino was hundred times better than this movie.

Seth Rogan is a dumb shit. How in the hell he ever broke into Hollywood I'll never know. By the way, Chris Kyle spent just as much time down below on the ground rummaging through buildings with his fellow troops than he spent on rooftops. So to call this guy a coward or communist or whatever these morons are saying about him is just idiotic...

Like i said in the other Thread. Thought it was Good, not Great.

I would put saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, and Black Hawk Down as Better.

Just My 2cents
