Report: NFL Finds Patriots Used Under-Inflated Balls

It appears the Colts were on to something when they informed the league they believed some of the balls used during Sunday's AFC Championship game were not fully inflated.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported late Tuesday night that 11 of the football the Patriots used were two pounds of air below the minimum requirement in their 45-7 rout of the Colts at Gillette Stadium. That win sent New England to its sixth Super Bowl since 2001. Pro Football Talk dug into the rulebook and said all NFL footballs must have 12.5-13.5 pounds per square inch (PSI).

The officials inspect 12 footballs from each squad a few hours before the game, PFT says, and they likely would have noticed if they were two pounds below the standard weight. Logic would then lead you to believe New England doctored the footballs after the referees inspected them.

Indianapolis likely never would have realized it was even an issue had linebacker D’Qwell Jackson not picked off quarterback Tom Brady early in the second quarter. Bob Glauber of Newsday says that's what led to the league's investigation.

Coach Bill Belichick did not flatly deny the allegations but said Monday he had not heard anything about it until that morning. The players also acted as if it was the craziest thing they had ever heard. Quarterback Tom Brady said the allegations were "ridiculous."

It's not clear how the NFL might punish the Patriots for this violation, but it could lead to a loss of draft picks (as was the case in 2008, when the Pats lost a first-rounder in the wake of "Spygate") or possibly something even more severe.

Bullshit. Media puling something out of their asses. 1) you cannot weigh the balls, because if the ball is subjected to elements, (rain or cold) the leather would become heavier and 2) the cold would reduce the psi in the ball. Patriots held the ball longer, so it would've affected them more. There would be no way to insure that the Colts ALWAYS got deflated balls. This story has BULLSHIT written all over it.

NFL rules stipulate the ball must be inflated to 12½ to 13½ pounds. The referee – on Sunday, it was veteran Walt Anderson – "shall be the sole judge as to whether all balls offered for play comply with these specifications," the rules say.

"A pump is to be furnished by the home club, and the balls shall remain under the supervision of the Referee until they are delivered to the ball attendant just prior to the start of the game."

Each team makes 12 primary balls available for testing 2 hours, 15 minutes before the game. The home team also makes available 12 backup balls.

The referee was responsible for judging the footballs. He deemed them to be within tolerance. Do we have another problem with the officials if in fact the balls were under inflated 2hrs 15 min prior to game time and they weren't inspected or tested? At anytime in the first half did an official touch or handle a football used by NE? If so, after touching and handling hundreds of balls throughout the year wouldn't they feel a differene?

FUCK this scumbag, it isn't coincidence that they haven't won a Super Bowl since they were found to be cheaters, including some of the biggest chokes in sports history. I agree with the following article completely. And it was completely unnecessary in a 48-7 game, kinda like Nixon pulling Watergate on McGovern, whom he would've slaughtered no matter what. If a 9th place hitter comes up to the plate in the first inning with score 8-0, and he uses a corked bat, he STILL cheated and should get suspended.

The home team supplies most of the balls, but the visiting team brings their own to use on offense. It was the Pats who were using the deflated balls. Wizard you are not

So what happened to the referee? It was his JOB to inspect the footballs. Once again, maybe someone in this world is not doing their job. What a surprise.

I don't think you are following- the deflated ball assist the offense, making it easier to throw and catch. Also your looking at drastic temperature changes (think like 80 degree drops) for the PSI in a football to drop from a 12 to a 10.5. Finally each team is issued a certain number of game balls (I think 12) that they use on offense, when their is a change of possession the teams offense taking the field uses the balls out of their pile. They don't use the same ball throughout the game.

When was the last time an NFL ref got suspended, got fired or fined by the NFL for their mistakes, & severely bad/suspect calls? Never........these bastards have a free pass.........

Ok, but here's a question: Who gives a fuck whether or not its deflated? Doesn't change the outcome of the game AT ALL. The Colts could've used deflated balls, and STILL would NOT have done anymore than they did. It's total bullshit for this to come out after the game. I guess Blount wouldn't have scored 3 TDs had it not been for deflated balls lmao! Thats the extreme form of reaching if I ever saw it. It's moot. They're going to lose the SB anyway...

A deflated ball is also less likely to be fumbled. Pats top RBs did not fumble once all season!

Doesn't matter that the score was 45-7. Cheating is cheating. It's his second offense. Probably more.

Belichick should be suspended immediately.
