James Dolan doesn't want your criticism. (USATSI)

The James Dolan era for the New York Knicks hasn't been all that stellar for Knicks fans. They've seen a once proud franchise with a fairly rich tradition go from something they love to root for into something they have to learn to tolerate. It's been this way for over a decade with poor spending decisions, and a level of dysfunction that is almost so embarrassing that it's impressive. Apparently, one fan had enough and Dolan had enough of the criticism.
According to Deadspin, the father of filmmaker Aaron Bierman emailed the Knicks' owner and had some harsh but fairly accurate things to say. The fan told Dolan he was embarrassed by the way the Knicks have gone under Dolan and said to sell the team.
Subject: I have been a knicks fan since 1952
At one stage I thought that you did a wonderful thing when you acquired EVERYTHING from your dad. However, since then it has been ALL DOWN HILL. Your working with Isaiah Thomas & everything else regarding the Knicks. Bringing on Phil Jackson was a positive beginning, but lowballing Steve Kerr was a DISGRACE to the knicks. The bottom line is that you merely continued to interfere with the franchise.
As a knicks fan for in excess of 60 years, I am utterly embarrassed by your dealings with the Knicks. Sell them so their fans can at least look forward to growing them in a positive direction Obviously, money IS NOT THE ONLY THING. You have done a lot of utterly STUPID business things with the franchise. Please NO MORE.
Respectfully,
[Aaron Bierman's dad]
The part of that email that doesn't make sense is on the Steve Kerr lowballing comment. The Knicks reportedly offered Kerr a five-year, $25 million deal to someone who had never coached before and Kerr ended up being smart and choosing to coach the Warriors instead. It doesn't sound like Dolan lowballed the offer to Kerr. It was set up to be unprecedented.
Deadspin had Dolan's emailed response to the fan, something Ian Begley of ESPN New York confirmed as real and written by Dolan. He told the fan to root for the Nets because the Knicks didn't want him as a fan.

You are a sad person. Why would anybody write such a hateful letter. I am.just guessing but ill bet your life is a mess and you are a hateful mess. What have you done that anyone would consider positive or nice. I am betting nothing. In fact ill bet you are negative force in everyone who comes in contact with you. You most likely have made your family miserable. Alcoholic maybe. I just celebrated my 21 year anniversary of sobriety. You should try it. Maybe it will help you become a person that folks would like to have around. In the mean while start rooting.for the Nets because the Knicks dont want you.

There are two things to take away from this: 1) James Dolan doesn't believe in question marks for punctuation and 2) it's probably best not to respond to this stuff if you're the owner of a team.

I could have written a better letter to Dolan than that. How about how they overpay for EVERYONE. Phil Jackson was not a positive beginnning. He is 86 years old and can barely walk and doesn't want to be in New York. When people leave the Knicks, they end up playing better. Look at Tyson Chandler and JR Smith. Sure he is in the lucky sperm club but who wouldn't want to be? Didn't they pay Allan Houston 100 million and he didn't even play. Was like the 2nd highest paid player in league. They paid Marbury ( who it is impossible to win with) a ton of money as well. Overpaid Malik Rose and Jerome James. Phil Jackson a positive beginning? LOL. That is a position where you need to hire a young guy; not an old guy who doesn't care that will be long gone when they are ready to compete again.

He`s still not the worst team owner in New York.

Fred Wilpon wins that prize.....Fred Wilpon is a piece of garbage.....I`m sad to say,i don`t know Fred Wilpon personally, but i hate that guys guts...I really do...LOL.

Fred Wilpon is a noncompetitive piece of shit.

He gave us fans 1 free agent this off season....Once again,a TOKEN signing just to show the fans he did something.....Michael Cuddyer...wow....36 year old free agent...LOL......You`re building for the future and you buy a 36 year old free agent...LMAO.......Worst then that....You were the 1st team to buy a free agent this off season...That means you had the pick of the liter and you buy a 36 year old player...LMAO.

I hate Fred Wilpon fan club....LMAO.

No doubt both franchises have been a mess, but at least the Mets have some hope in their young pitching staff. If only they can stay healthy! The Wilpons should sell as should Dolan. The Knicks only hope is that somehow someway, Jackson will be able to sign some free agents that will fit into his system. At least they have created cap room, but success seems light years away. Dolan is an ass and a moron. Respectfully, of course.

How can you beleive in Phil? You can't win with Carmello Anthony. Everyone knows that by now. They paid Phil so much money to turn down. There is no Kobe, Shaq, or Jordan coming to play there. Phil is old and can't be travelling around scouting players. The fact they he is screwing Jenny Buss is hilarious. I think she is hot and Phil looks older than he probabty is. The Celtics knew they were rebuilding so they get a young coach.

I`m going to hang in there and see what his off season moves are all about......Going to get a nice draft pick....And we`ll see what free agents he can bring to the Big Apple.

The Garden will sell out whether they are in first place or having the worst season in franchise history. Dolan knows this, thus his not giving two fucks.

Qft, I'm a guy that thinks it's crazy to walk away from NYC and MSG, but it appears Steve was brilliant in doing just that

His best move was paying Larry Brown what ended up being 28 million dollars to coach for 1 year and not make the playoffs. Some guys just have too much money. He signed like a 4 year, 28 million dollar contract and was fired after 1 year. He'd fire anyone in the press or 1 of his cable companies or announcers or whoever if they spoke anything remotely negative about the team.

It was a smart move, but I believe that he or his agent had a pretty good idea that GS was planning on giving them more money, not to mention had a hell of alot more talent.

I was a Knicks fan my whole life. Still have my John Starks jersey in the closet. That being said, Dolan made so many screwups over the years that I couldn't root for the team. He hires people that don't know what they are doing. I hung on after Dolan and Isiah Thomas destroyed the team but called it quits when he tried to hire Thomas back like a year or 2 later even after what he had done to the franchise. Put every team's name in a hat (minus the Lakers, fuck the Lakers) and drew a name. Been a Milwaukee Bucks fan ever since. Actually think I wore my Milwaukee Bucks shirt to the RX bash the last time I attended. This is the first year in a while we're good. Go Bucks!

Also the first smart thing Dolan and the front office has done lately is hire Derek Fisher to coach. That being said, the roster is so trash from years of mismanagement that Fisher isn't going to have a real team for 3 or 4 years.

Isiah Thomas, now there's a man who screwed up everything he touched after his playing career, EVERYTHING

This was the Sterling/ Clippers model for years. Sterling knew he could make money by still being bad and not bringing in expensive players.

+1

Some owners in various sports franchises know this and have no motivation to improve their team.
