UCLA Takes Big Recruiting Hit

UCLA took a major recruiting hit when 4 star LB Roquan Smith deided to remain at home and go to the University of Georgia. This entire mess was brought about by UCLA's refusal to be honest with the recruit about the future of UCLA's DC Jeff Ulbrich, the person most responsible for recruiting Smith to UCLA to begin with. There were rumors that Ulbrich was going to move on to the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. The deal was basically done two days BEFORE signing day, but UCLA convinced Ulbrich to lie about it and wait until signing day was over before he announced that he was leaving UCLA. Smith was smart enough not to sign his letter of intent until the Ulbrich situation was cleared up. When Ulbrich left for Atlanta, UCLA lost one of their top recruits.

I am sure that this was not the first time that assistant coaches have pulled this stunt. It is time for the NCAA to start penalizing schools for doing this. IMO, if an assistant coach leaves a school AFTER signing day, there should be a time when a recruit is allowed to retract his letter of intent. I believe two months is fair. NFL teams are not going to wait that long for an assistant coach to agree to terms with them. What UCLA did was an obvious desperate attempt to head off the stampeed to USC, now that the Trojans are off probation. It did not work. UCLA should be penalized for this. I hope that the NCAA investigates this and penalizes UCLA, but I doubt that they will. It is funny that UCLA lost the recruit and the assistant coach to Georgia teams.

Disagree. You sign with the school not the coach. What UCLA did was wrong but I can't feel sorry for Smith. The recruits have too much power as it is they are lucky to get schollies worth 100-250k. Every year dozens of recruits change last minute and screw the schools

UCLA still did fine in recruiting as far as I can tell. There are a few programs that would like to have that Oline haul and that 5 star QB.

I don't think they should penalize schools because an assistant wants to change jobs. That puts the blame on the wrong end. If they want to curtail the musical chairs act, maybe there should be some kind of penalty for assistants, say financially for moving to NFL, or in the case of college making them sit out a year, like they do players for transferring. Job security is getting better for assistants. Very, very soon they will all be working with 3 year contracts, so there has to be some give back.

The problem with this partiular case is that this was a done deal BEFORE signing day. The recruit should have been notified of the situation. Instead, the school lied about it. If the assistant wants to change jobs, that is fine. If the school knows about the change and covers it up, as UCLA did, then penalties should be given to that school.

This kid is a punk. Hopefully UGA can help him realize he is just an 18 year old kid on a roster full of 4-star football players.

Isn't that true about 80% of the players who come out of high school? Look at the idiot who SouthCarolina took. He gets arrested and immediately starts mouthing off in a text, telling people how he is still going to South Carolina and how they will be wathing him on T.V. These kids need to get their faces bloodied and their arses kicked and get put into place. That's what we did when some dumb punk recruit shot his mouth off. Just kick the caca out of them. That is why cops love to kick it out of these idiots.

Well, not all of the recruits have power. And some coaches are just assholes. Case in point Bobby Petrino. He offers RB Colburn and he's committed to Louisville 8 months before signing day. He was a 3 star player, so he wasn't being drooled over like some of these 4 star prosepcts.. It turns out Louisville had more players committed to their class than they were expecting. So many good players that they couldn't fit them all under the scholarship limit. So instead of telling some of the new kids who have come along, "sorry we don't have any more scholarships to give," Petrino decided that Colburn-who shut down his own recruiting 8 months ago when he committed to Louisville-wouldn't have a scholarship to enroll at Louisville after all. That's a lousy way to treat a kid who made a commitment to your football program. And it leaves Colburn in limbo. The other schools who had been recruiting Colburn moved on when he announced his commitment to Louisville 8 months ago, and have now reached their own scholarship limits. I get that this stuff sometimes happens, but the bad part here is Petrino didn't even call the kid himself to tell him. He had an assistant do it. And to wait until signing day to tell him, that's just a shitty thing to do to a kid.. Yes, kids flip at the last minute, but this kid didn't. The real issue is that there was no communication with the kid before such a shitty action was taken by Louisville's reneging on his scholly. Colburn's highschool coach is so pissed about this that he and a few other highschool coaches have decided they will no longer work with Petrino when he wants to recruit their players. I don't blame them.

Agree GS. The 3-star kids are happy to be offered by the Power 5 conferences. There are always several in each class (unless you're Alabama), so most schools do take a lot of 3-stars. But the 4-star & 5-star kids are able to act like cocky jackasses.

Tennessee cut loose a 4-star DE from Florida (who ended up signing w/ Rutgers) very late in the process. They apparently got a few other higher rated prospects along the D-line and told him they didn't have room for him. Nice problem to have. I was hoping UF would go get him, but he went to Rutgers. WTF?

Keep praying RedEye. Oregon's days are finished. Do not expect a total collapse, even though as long as Helfrich is coaching them, that is a possibility, but the fact is that USC and UCLA have more talent than Oregon does. Oregon hosts USC this season. Let's see what happens. The big problem for Oregon is that if they lose to Michigan State in Lansing, their hopes for a return trip to the playoffs take a severe hit. One more loss and they are finished, and Oregon has not gone undefeated in Conference Play in 4 years. Even worse news is that Oregon has lost more conference games at home (3) than they have away (2).
