UCLA took a major recruiting hit when 4 star LB Roquan Smith deided to remain at home and go to the University of Georgia. This entire mess was brought about by UCLA's refusal to be honest with the recruit about the future of UCLA's DC Jeff Ulbrich, the person most responsible for recruiting Smith to UCLA to begin with. There were rumors that Ulbrich was going to move on to the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. The deal was basically done two days BEFORE signing day, but UCLA convinced Ulbrich to lie about it and wait until signing day was over before he announced that he was leaving UCLA. Smith was smart enough not to sign his letter of intent until the Ulbrich situation was cleared up. When Ulbrich left for Atlanta, UCLA lost one of their top recruits.
I am sure that this was not the first time that assistant coaches have pulled this stunt. It is time for the NCAA to start penalizing schools for doing this. IMO, if an assistant coach leaves a school AFTER signing day, there should be a time when a recruit is allowed to retract his letter of intent. I believe two months is fair. NFL teams are not going to wait that long for an assistant coach to agree to terms with them. What UCLA did was an obvious desperate attempt to head off the stampeed to USC, now that the Trojans are off probation. It did not work. UCLA should be penalized for this. I hope that the NCAA investigates this and penalizes UCLA, but I doubt that they will. It is funny that UCLA lost the recruit and the assistant coach to Georgia teams.
