Al Michaels on the great Russian team: "We feared that it would be 6-0, 7-0 early in the 2nd period & that nobody would care."

Of course it is ONE of the greatest upsets in sports history, but it is arguably THE greatest upset in sports history.
I actually had it written that way at first but decided to stick the "one of" in at last minute before posting. But I agree, probably the greatest upset in sports history.

I'm not sure I'd put it above Buster knocking out Tyson.

That`s a good one......2 huge underdogs winning.

Those Russians were bad ass......I have to give the nod to the U.S.A team......Those were kids playing men.

great moment in sport. USA/Canada were at a severe disadvantage as we couldn't use our pros, while Euro teams did. Dumb.

Russia BEAT Team USA 10-3 in an exhibition game prior to Lake Placid. :)

in an elimination game, anything can happen. As an underdog whats definitely needed is outstanding goaltending. USA got it that day-- shots on goal? 39 to 16 in favor of Russia, lol.

let's keep in mind USA beat the Czech (arguably the 2nd best team there) and Fins , as well as tying the Swedes. This wasn't a 'useless' crew out there, :)

kids? USA put 8 yr olds out there? :)

USA and Canada had non-pros (college, university players) . Russia, Czech, Swedes , Fins had their country's elite players . Clearly not fair. Yes, big upset indeed-- if they played the next day Russia likely blows them out just as they did pre-tournament.

again, usa BEAT the number 2 team in this tournament, the Czechs. This team wasn't exactly Poland on ice......now if Poland beat Russia at Lake Placcid, well, it would be more than a 'miracle'...:)

watch the 30 for 30 on Russian hockey, will give you some perspective on just how big an upset this was.
those Russians are clearly still bitter about this loss, a national embarrassment.
