Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton, who was suspended from baseball from 2004 to 2006 for issues related to cocaine and alcohol abuse, is said to have had a relapse, a source told CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman.

The source told Heyman that Hamilton, who was scheduled to meet with MLB officials on Wednesday, confessed to going on a binge that involved cocaine a couple months ago. There is no indication to this point that Hamilton failed a drug test.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Hamilton was in New York on Wednesday to discuss a "disciplinary issue" with MLB officials.

Hamilton would technically be a first-time offender at the major-league level since his previous brushes occurred while the minors, and could be treated as such. First-time offenders by rule are put into a program and subject to increased testing, though Hamilton already is tested three times a week, according to reports. However, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported that it is "unlikely" Hamilton would be treated as strictly a first-time offender, and Jon Morosi of FoxSports.com reported that new commissioner Rob Manfred may have some discretion based on Hamilton's past minor-league incidents and ex-commissioner Bud Selig's decision to reinstate him after many minor-league suspensions.

The first hint what Hamilton's trouble might be came in a tweet from Steve Marcus of Newsday, who quoted Hamilton's father-in-law Michael Chadwick saying that Hamilton "hit a bump in the road, keep him in your prayers."

MLB spokesman Patrick Courtney declined comment, and Hamilton's agent Michael Moye didn't return a call.

The 33-year-old Hamilton was out of baseball for nearly three years due to his past struggles with both drugs and alcohol, and was suspended numerous times as a minor-leaguer. Hamilton resurfaced with the Reds in 2007, and went on to produce five strong seasons in Texas, winning an MVP in 2010 and helping the Rangers twice reach the World Series before joining the rival Angels in 2013 as a free agent on a $125-million contract.

Hamilton has under-performed with the Angels his first couple seasons there and is going to miss the first several weeks with a shoulder ailment, an injury that plagued him last year. Now there is more serious trouble, and concern for his well being beyond the baseball field.

I hate to say it.....I just believe his life will always be filled with drugs and alcohol.

The guy can`t stay clean......I can see him being dead by 50.

He`s another Ken Caminiti.

Sorry to say.

Good luck Josh!

Some people can control their drug use while others can not......Josh is one that can not control.himself once the drugs & alcohol starts.....he lives in excess.

While some addicts walk into a room & see their kids & wife & that's pretty much their wake up call that your lived ones are more important than drugs.

Others like Josh can't overcome that fine line.......scientists have done studies in this field on why some people can stop & others like Josh can't.......doesn't help that he got a 125 million dollar contract.......

^ very true. I'm a person who can do the coc on a Friday night and then not touch it for 6 months or longer. I'm stronger than drugs. Drugs are just recreation to me kind of like gambling.

Josh has a week mind

His last year as a Rangers alot of the talking heads on ESPN were talking about the great support system he has in Texas... That leaving the team could be his downfall... I thought they were just being pricks.. In retrospect they've may have been right...

I'd be curious if it was a month long binge or just a night weekend, idk in my uneduacted opinion of the subject I thiink there could be a difference, a small slip up and then getting back sober quickly would seem like growth

How pathetic of a person are you at 30 years old that you have to have a grown man babysit you. His babysitter would take away all his credit cards and make sure he only had $20 on him at all times.

I bought a couple tickets last minute for Rangers/LAA 2 years ago and took a buddy with me. The seats were in th outfield lower section so the LAA bullpen was directly to my left not even 150 yards from me. I commenced to drink about 7 zeiganbachs and by the 6th inning I was sauced up good. Anyway, I start talking trash to the bullpen. To their credit they let me go on for a good inning or so without even glancing at me. It was quite impressive because I had a lot of F bombs flying out and talking major shit. By the 8th inning I was lit up and I stepped it up a notch to say the least. I started yelling, "Don't let Josh near your wive's, he will fuck them in a heartbeat." "How do Yall like that crackhead playing for you guys now? Yall can have him!!" Shit like that. Finally, I got some glances and I knew I was getting under their skin. The relief pitcher started warming up and he was a nobody really. I started yelling "Don't fuck it up, dude!!!" Over and over. Lol. He went out there and got LIT UP!!!! By the end I was in full form and the usher had to come down several times to quiet me down. Great night!!

Not the same GB. "Crack is a helluva drug." Most coc heads start with sniffing then progress to crack. It's a totally different high. You can function in public on cocaine, but not smoking crack.

That's my point, son guys walk into a room & stare at all 5 of those faces & straighten up & never look back to drugs.......Josh's addictive personality & something chemical in his brain won't allow him to over come his addiction, & the sad thing for these guys is, not even all the money in the world & the live of their families can correct them.

He is a drug addict. Drug addicts can't slip up once or they tumble down the mountain. It's a disease. People who can casually use drugs do not have the disease. Josh Hamilton needs to walk away from the game, check into a full time inpatient facility to get sober and then start attending daily meetings or he will be leaving that family behind...and going 6 feet under.
