Thanks BD...with Phillips going down, Kentucky only has two healthy scholarship quarterbacks for now.

Get a LOAD of this one. The Baylor Bears have 6-foot-7, 410 pound Laquan McGowan practicing at tight end this spring. In this year's Cotton Bowl, McGowan caught an 18 yard touchdown pass against Michigan State. Not a misprint...6-7, 410 pounds. They are saying the big guy has good hands and should help then in the run game. "We're looking at him as kind of a slot and tight end type of guy," said coach Art Briles.

Jez, can you imagine a 180 pound cornerback meeting the big fellow head on? Wouldn't want to be the cornerback!!

I think the guy is worthless as a bloker on pass protection. It will be easy for DE's to get around him. They will have taken 3 steps before he can take one.

Michigan State had no solution for him. All they could do is stop and stare at Fat Albert running over their asses. Maybe this temporary TE duty stuff is Briles ploy to make him run more and get him down to a svelte 380.

Michigan State still won that game. This guy would be trampled in a good conference. The Pac 12 teams would run circles aroound him. This is typial Briles. He will do anything to win except play legitimate teams from legitimate conferences. Not just Big 12 teams.

Well, at least we agree on Baylor's spineless scheduling.

Baylor's schedule:

@SMU.....Lamar.....Rice.....@Texas Tech.....@Kansas.....West Virginia.....Iowa State.....@Kansas State.....
Oklahoma.....@Oklahoma State.....@TCU.....Texas

Looks like the success of the season will be determined in the last four games. Pretty much cruise control until then.

Sidenotes: Baylor has already started spring drills looking for some help for the 17 starters returning...including both
offensive and defensive lines. The Bears will be under a new offensive coordinator and new quarterback.

Alabama will begin spring practice less than two weeks from now with an emphasis on offense. The Tide will be looking to fine seven new starters including a new starting quarterback. Florida State transfer Jake Coker will go into drills as the favorite but will be challenged by RS Jr. Alex Morris, RS Soph. Cooper Bateman, RS Frost David Cromwell, and 5 star signee Blake Barnett who is now enrolled and will go through spring drills.

Bama returns a ton of talent on defense including 7 or 8 starters from last year. The defensive side of the ball is rock solid but will provide an opportunity for several young players to "step up", especially at cornerback.

Alabama will open the season against Wisconsin...a good fit for a veteran defense and young offense.

USC HC Steve Sarkisian is on a very warm seat this season. Last year's club went 9-4, with three of the 4 losses by a total of 10 points. The biggest problem for the team was that they simply ran out of gas in the 4th quarter. A lot of that was attributed to the fact that USC was still under NCAA scholarship probation and was limited in their physical practices because they could not afford any injuries. They simply did not have the man power to replace the starting 22.

This season is different. USC has it's entire complement of scholarships available. Sark wants practices to be more intense, and a lot more paysical. Sark is hoping that his team will be in better shape and be able to go 4 quarters, instead of the 3 quarters that they displayed last season. Last season USC was outscored 90-68 in the 4th quarter, a stat that is totally unacceptable to the alum. While 9 wins is certainly nothing to laugh at, many feel that a fully stocked USC would have ended up with 12 wins. Only the UCLA game was out of reach for them by the 4th quarter. Many are saying that anything short of a win against UCLA and a Pac 10 South Championship will be unacceptable this season.

Oklahoma

The Sooners open spring practice today looking for a starting quarterback. Stoops said he wanted competition and would be in no hurry to name a starter. The top three candidates all have starting experience. Trevor Knight, the returning starter who was very inconsistent last year...Baker Mayfield, a transfer starter from Texas Tech...and Cody Thomas, who started a few games last season for an injured Knight.

Lincoln Riley (East Carolina) will take over as the new offensive coordinator and plans to bring back the "Air Raid" offense the Sooners were successful with in the past.

Should be an interesting spring in Norman, Oklahoma.................

Michigan State WR Macgarrett Kings was arrested for varioous charges including drunk and disorderly and resisting arrest in Downtown Lansing. Apparetnly Kings kicked a parking enforcement vehicle, then resisted when officers tried to arrest him. This is the 2nd alcohol related offense for Kings. He was the 2nd leading WR on the team last season. Typical problem for a kid who has no business being in college to begin with.

I also saw that article about him. Can't argue with your point about him not belonging in college too. Dumbass lowlifer just cost himself a few million in his NFL contract if he gets that far. If he does have this aggressiveness to deal with, he's better off taking it out on the field or after the game like the time LeGarrette Blount punched out Byron Hout when Boise St. beat the Ducks at Autzen in Chip Kelly's debut. Blount is doing pretty well in the NFL now and I'm sure that incident didn't hurt his pay one bit... probably helped it.

Ohio State

The Buckeyes will open practice tomorrow (3/10) with three pretty good quarterbacks but most of them aren't fully healthy for spring drills. Braxton Miller is still recovering from shoulder surgery. J.T. Barrett, is still on the mend from a broken ankle. So, Cardale Jones, who led Ohio State the final three games will get lots of snaps.

A side issue/big question is who sticks around after spring. Miller has graduated and can transfer to another school and play this season. Not likely all three QBs will be on Ohio State's roster when the season opens.

I can see either Miller or Notre Dame's Golston going to a desperate Texas team.

Any news on Cromwell? I know that a couple years ago Stoops had a choice between taking Cromwell or Justine Hansen and decided to go with Hansen because his style fit the OU system better at the time. Both were Rivals top 100 recruits. But OU is now under a new system with Riley taking over OC duties. So the QB battle is wide open. I was just curious about Cromwell at Bama. As you know, he was right under Stoops nose at Norman High School, but the knock on him (rumor) is that he was a little too slow with his reads. But as a QB, he has great physical attributes. And picking up reads better can be taught under the right OC. I never did get to see Cromwell play, but I got to see Hansen. He definitely has the strong arm to make it at OU. But the problem is there is so much competition at that position. I'm sure Cromwell is going through the same thing at Bama.

Some Spring QB Battles

Florida State: There is no clear replacement for Jameis Winston. Last season's backup, Sean Maguire, is the only quarterback on the roster with any experience.

Baylor: Stud freshman Jarrett Stidham will try to jump past next-in-line junior Seth Russell. Coach Art Briles has had a lot of success plugging in the experienced player.

Notre Dame: Mistake prone Everett Golson will try to win the starting job back from Malik Zaire, and if Golson doesn't, will he take the graduate transfer route. Only 3 percent of Notre Dame's student body is black...both QB's are black...interesting.

LSU: Highly touted Brandon Harris will get another shot to take the starting job away from incumbent Anthony Jennings. Tigers fans might want to keep an eye on the transfer wire...especially how things play out with Golson (ND) and Miller (Ohio State).

Anyone having live SEC football withdrawals?
Four teams have already started spring practice and two more — Mizzou and Auburn — take the field early next week. Here are 10 items on the agenda we’re keeping an eye on this month as teams begin hitting again:
10. Signs of a breakout season from Alabama TE O.J. Howard: At times last fall, Howard ceased to exist in Lane Kiffin’s offense, a result of fewer targets and his blocking ability coming into question. The guy’s a former five-star recruit whose national moment came against LSU with a 52-yard touchdown reception after he out-ran the Tigers secondary. Remember? It seemed like ages ago and we want the old Howard back. The 6-foot-6 athletic target is capable of double-digit touchdowns with enough focus within the offense.
9. Georgia’s linebackers: This group, at least heading into spring ball, is the most dynamic in the SEC with extreme athleticism (Leonard Floyd and Lorenzo Carter) and veteran leadership (Jordan Jenkins). Jeremy Pruitt will spend much of spring practice moving these three around in Georgia’s 3-4 look, making sure all three are on the field at the same time. Don’t be surprised to see the Bulldogs leading the SEC in sacks this season (though Tennessee’s awfully talented in the front seven).
8. Stars staying injury-free: With a College Football Playoff berth to compete for, the SEC doesn’t need returning starters and potential Heisman frontrunners going full speed too often this month, nearly half a year before the games really begin. Any staff would be foolish to overwork players like Leonard Fournette and Nick Chubb, two key cogs for their respective division title-caliber teams.
7. New defensive coordinators: They’re everywhere in the SEC, notably at Auburn and Texas A&M where both teams took the necessary steps in strengthening chances at a run to Atlanta in 2015. Will Muschamp landed on his feet at an old stomping ground on the Plains while the Aggies, ranked last in the league in total defense the last two seasons, lured John Chavis away from LSU. This will be an interesting storyline to following throughout spring.
6. A well-placed wisecrack from Steve Spurrier: The Head Ball Coach has been relatively quiet this offseason, besides a comment tied to his future that damaged South Carolina’s 2015 class. With most media members (including SDS) projecting the Gamecocks to finish fourth — or even fifth — in the Eastern Division, verbal missiles may be few and far between. We hope not. Spurrier is one of college football’s few coaches that makes what goes on surrounding the game fun.
5. Mizzou’s new-look defense without Markus Golden and Shane Ray: First-year DC Barry Odom doesn’t think the Tigers will have much of a drop-off despite losing two of the league’s top pass rushers off last season’s 11-win squad. Since joining the SEC, Mizzou has pumped out players off the edge, one of the leading reasons the Tigers have made consecutive trips to Atlanta. Kentrell Brothers and Harold Brantley are next season’s budding stars and should make plenty of plays this spring. The Tigers open practice Monday.
4. Early-look at expectations for the Magnolia State: Blessed with arguably the SEC’s two best players on each side of the football, Mississippi State and Ole Miss will try and reacquire the national spotlight on the heels of memorable 2014 campaigns. Dak Prescott is the league’s Heisman favorite while Robert Nkemdiche anchors a Rebels defense that should be able to absorb the loss of All-American defensive backs Cody Prewitt and Senquez Golson. The quarterback spot’s an issue at Ole Miss without Bo Wallace and the Bulldogs are thin within the front seven in Starkville.
3. Bret Bielema’s progress at Arkansas: Can the Razorbacks continue the momentum established at the end of last season? The return of dual 1,000-yard rushers Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins gives Arkansas arguably the SEC’s best 1-2 punch in the running game and Brandon Allen is a two-year starter under center. The biggest question this spring will be on defense where Robb Smith is tasked with finding replacements up front for Trey Flowers and Darius Philon.
2. Quarterback battles: The competition should be fierce at Florida and South Carolina, two teams expecting a revamp offensively this season for varying reasons. The Gators have a new coach in Jim McElwain while the Gamecocks are heading into summer without a starting quarterback for the first time in several years. Treon Harris vs. Will Grier will be the most intriguing competition of the spring. Redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch has the early edge in Columbia, S.C.
1. Instant-impact early enrollees: There’s a few who should really turn heads this month and most happen to play in the West. Five-star corner Kevin Toliver unofficially began his LSU career on Saturday, earning mention from coach Les Miles in his post-practice presser. JUCO transfers Jovon Robinson and Tony Bridges at Auburn and Ole Miss respectively appear SEC-ready. The best of the bunch could be South Carolina’s Marquavius Lewis however, a pass-rusher who should provide the Gamecocks with stability at a position of need.
