Harrison Ford was injured when the antique single-engine plane he was piloting crashed on a golf course near Santa Monica, California, sources said today.
Ford, 72, was taken to a hospital near Penmar Golf Course, just west of Santa Monica Municipal Airport, at 2:20 p.m. PST, sources told ABC News. Patrick Butler with the Los Angeles Fire Department would not identify the pilot injured in the crash, but said he was initially helped by bystanders on the golf course.
Butler said the lone victim was conscious following the crash and listed in "fair to moderate" condition. He was flying a model Ryan ST3KR single-engine airplane manufactured in 1942.

"He was able to speak, he expressed that he was in pain, which was no surprise," Elaine Miller, who was golfing at the time of the crash, told ABC station KABC. "He had a significant head wound, - he asked someone to hold his legs up, and people were just saying, 'you’re okay, the fire department is on its way,' and...once police and fire started to arrive, my friends and I sort of backed away and went to the other side of the course to give them room."
Ford's son tweeted that his father was "battered, but ok!"

The pilot reported engine trouble shortly after taking off from Santa Monica Municipal Airport, a senior federal official told ABC News.
According to air traffic controller transmissions from LiveATC.net, the pilot reported engine failure and asked for an immediate return to the airport. He then reported that his aircraft came up short of the runway.
The FAA and NTSB are investigating.

An avid pilot, Ford told ABC's Barbara Walters in 2008 that he "loved the freedom of flight."
"I love the places you go," he said. "I love the people in aviation, the people that I meet in aviation. I love seeing the world from an airplane. I'm in love with flying."
Ford survived a crash once before. He and a flight instructor crashed a helicopter near Van Nuys Airport in California in 1999, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Ford has worked to support general aviation with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and he presented a legacy award in his name to the president of the association in January.

I know this is a serious story, but this line made me laugh. Two doctors happened to be at a golf course. What a coincidence!

5:05 PM PT -- TMZ just obtained video of first responders on the scene treating Harrison ... just yards away from the plane he just crash landed on the golf course. // 5:00 PM PT -- Harrison's son Ben just tweeted, "At the hospital. Dad is ok. Battered, but ok! He is every bit the man you would think he is." 4:30 PM PT -- We've obtained intense audio of Harrison talking to the Santa Monica Airport control tower just moments after he'd taken off. Listen ... you hear him report engine failure and request an emergency return to the airport. // 4:41 PM PT -- A witness who was golfing at the time of the crash tells us she heard the engine sputter ... and watched the plane do a "nose dive straight on the 8th hole tee box." The witness adds, "I was one of the first people to run from the hole toward the plane. 4 to 5 men pulled the pilot out of the plane." "They got him away from the plane. They were concerned it would catch on fire." "Two doctors were there – and they had a 1st aid box with them. He was conscious, talking a little -- a HUGE cut on his head." The witness tells us the cut was VERY deep -- "A swath of his skin was missing. There was blood dripping down his face."A small plane piloted by Harrison Ford has crash-landed at an L.A. golf course ... but we're told the actor has survived. TMZ has learned ... Ford was piloting what appears to be a vintage 2-seater fighter plane Thursday ... when something went wrong and he crashed into Penmar golf course in Venice, CA. We're told Ford suffered multiple gashes to his head and was bleeding. Two doctors who happened to be at the golf course rushed over to treat the actor. Emergency personnel arrived to the scene a short time later. Ford was transported to a nearby hospital. 72-year-old Ford is a longtime aviator -- piloting planes and helicopters -- and has crashed multiple times in the past. Story developing ...

As an actor, I think he's way over-rated... though I wish him a quick recovery.

CNN news was referring to him as "legendary actor..." I don't see him as a legend, in no way is he in the same class as
DeNiro or Hoffman.
