MLB's Week 1 surprises


April 13, 2015


It was quite an eventful first week in MLB, highlighted by AL Central favorites Detroit and Kansas City thrashing the rest of the division to enter the season’s second Monday as baseball’s only undefeated teams.


Surprising? Mildly, but not really.


The Tigers starting rotation remains one of the best. Miguel Cabrera is still the game's top hitter. Kansas City’s bullpen is still great. The Royals offense looks improved, too.


So what did stand out? What was actually surprising? Glad you asked. We"ll take a team-by-team look at what most qualifies. Keep in mind, it's Week 1, so many of these can simply be flukes or the start of something worth taking seriously.


Arizona: Paul Goldschmidt got off to the start most envisioned, but with Mark Trumbo banged up and Aaron Hill coming up with just one extra base hit, there’s concern that there again won’t be enough punch. Second-year CF Ender Inciarte is the most likely tonic, so seeing the 24-year-old Venezuelan him pick up a hit in five of six games was a blessing.


Atlanta: What the whole team did was surprising. 5-1? On the heels of dealing closer Craig Kimbrel in a season-opening buzz-kill? Andrelton Simmons is hitting? Alberto Callaspo batting .538? Charmed life. For now.


Baltimore: Alejandro DeAza was a curious choice to bat lead-off since he swings at most everything and strikes out so much. We’ll see how long it lasts, but he’s got two homers, one to lead off the Orioles’ lone home win. He’s also struck out 10 times, at least once in every game and multiple times in all but one.


Boston: David Ortiz is batting .130 and struck out nine times in 23 at-bats. He’s already beaten the Yankees once though. It’s a good bet he’ll figure things out. Fortunately for the Red Sox, Xander Bogaerts and Hanley Ramirez have picked up the slack.


Chi. Cubs: The core of the Cubs bullpen, from closer Hector Rondon to setup men Pedro Strop, Jason Motte, Neil Ramirez and Phil Coke, has given up two earned runs 16.2 innings. Considering the pen was so flammable last season, this is a welcome sight.


Chi. Sox: David Robertson looks unhittable. Well, he did give up one hit in his three innings of work, but the former Yankees closer has required no adjustment period in his new role with the White Sox. It would be nice for Robin Ventura not to have to worry about who puts games away since it’s been such a problem area.


Cincinnati: Young pitchers Anthony DeSclafani and Raisel Iglesias stole the show. One had six starts with the Marlins last year and the Cuban was making his major league debut, but both looked extremely poised with electric stuff. Homer Bailey will return soon, but the Reds won’t have to rush him back and may have to bump veterans Jason Marquis or Mike Leake out of the rotation instead.


Cleveland: Losing Yan Gomes for at least six weeks definitely hurts, but young backup catcher Roberto Perez homered in his first game of the season and will need to be a difference-maker going forward.


Colorado: D.J. LeMahieu and Corey Dickerson are off to ridiculous starts, hitting safely in all six games and batting a combined 22-for-49 (.449) in setting the table atop the lineup. The Rockies haven’t left Coors Field yet, so curb your enthusiasm.


Detroit: SS Jose Iglesias closed the opening week batting .526, ahead of Cabrera (.520), Anthony Gose (.450) and Ian Kinsler (.440), making up the top-four batting average leaders in the AL. Iglesias, who missed all of last season due to stress fractures in both shins, has x-factor written all over him.


Houston: Evan Gattis and Chris Carter, expected to be run producers in the middle of the order, opened a combined 1-for-19, striking out 20 times in 39 attempts. Somehow, the Astros escaped the week 3-3.


Kansas City: The Royals managed to remain perfect despite getting only one hit in 13 at-bats from leader Alex Gordon, who has struck out in every game.


LA Angels: Starters Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Matt Shoemaker and Hector Santiago allowed 22 earned runs in 35 innings, allowing Seattle and Kansas City to fatten up their batting averages.


LA Dodgers: Adrian Gonzalez came out smoking, but Yasiel Puig started so slowly that a 2-for-10 stint in Arizona actually raised his average to .136. He did connect for his first home run, but you know the buzzards will come circling if he doesn’t pick it up. Teams would still be interesting in trading for him, which Don Mattingly probably wouldn’t hate.


Miami: Seeing Florida native Dee Gordon respond so well to his new surroundings was a plus. The new leadoff guy hit safely in five of six and scored four times in the team's only win, a 10-9 thriller over Tampa Bay. Of course, that excitement has been tempered by Giancarlo Stanton batting just .158.


Milwaukee: Jimmy Nelson stopped the bleeding after four consecutive Brewers losses, shutting out the Pirates with nine Ks. It’s a big year for him after last year’s early struggles.


Minnesota: It’s surprising that this passes for a major league team and their loyal fan base is OK with it.


NY Mets: Matt Harvey pitched six innings of scoreless ball, striking out nine. Like Metallica once put it, and nothing else matters.


NY Yankees: Alex Rodriguez wasn’t booed mercilessly and ended Week 1 batting .300 with a homer and a team-high six RBI, not to mention a start at first base.


Oakland: Mark Canha, a gem of a find that’s only going to inflate Billy Beane’s inflated legacy further, hit safely in all five games, batting .360. He only struck out twice after leading all of MLB in Ks during Spring Training.


Philadelphia: Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are a combined 5-for-39 and have yet to leave the yard. Surprising? Maybe not. Depressing? If you’re a Phillies fan, undoubtedly.


Pittsburgh: Rookie Arquimedes Caminero and Rob Scahill, who struggled with Colorado, have joined former Phillie Antonio Bastardo and closer Marc Melancon in combining for 8.2 innings of scoreless relief. Caminero looks like a beast, so combined with set-up men Tony Watson and Jared Hughes, the bullpen could be a major area of strength here.


San Diego: Kimbrel picked right up where he left off in Atlanta, pitching scoreless innings in all four outings and racking up two saves. It’s a good bet the Padres won’t be experiencing buyer’s remorse.


San Francisco: Madison Bumgarner allowed 10 hits? In one game? He’ll be alright. It actually happened to him three times last season.


Seattle: James Paxton and Hisashi Iwakuma were virtually unhittable last season but were each roughed up by the Angels. All those who backed the Mariners to reach the World Series, me included, need that to be an aberration.


St. Louis: Plenty to be excited about, but Michael Wacha looking so sharp against a formidable Reds lineup was a great start following last year’s sophomore slump, especially since he looked healthy.


Tampa Bay: The Rays are going to have their ups and downs given their youth movement, but had to breathe a sigh of relief seeing young starters Chris Archer and Jake Odorizzi get off to excellent starts.


Texas: Derek Holland going on the 60-day DL was a rough blow, but pitching project Nick Martinez looks like he’s made further strides, shutting out Oakland on the road over seven innings in his 2015 debut.


Toronto: That pitching staff looks rough. The starters appear shaky and the bullpen looks like a bust. They’ll score runs, but the Jays certainly do appear to be a team to ride for overs.


Washington: Michael A. Taylor leads the team with 10 strikeouts, but could become a special player and a catalyst if he shortens his swing. The rookie will be the CF until Denard Span returns later this month.

Three-Horse Race in East

It's been a long haul, this NBA regular season, but the playoffs are just around the corner.


So who wins the NBA title?


We all know the favorites don't waltz to the NBA Finals.


Last year, San Antonio had to go seven games with Dallas in the first round, then six with Oklahoma City.


Two years ago Miami needed to go seven games with up-and-coming Indiana to get there, then had to pull off a miracle in Game 6 to stun the Spurs in the finals.


Three years ago San Antonio was a No. 1 seed and up 2-0 on the young Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. Then, WHAM, Oklahoma City won five in a row to take a 1-0 lead in the Finals. Then, WHAM, Miami won 4 in a row to shell-shock wide-eyed OKC.


Even in college we saw a slew of upsets and surprises in this year's NCAA Tournament, with No. 1 Villanova going down early, one day before a pair of No. 2 seeds (Virginia, Kansas) fell.


And didn’t Wichita State and tiny Butler make a deep runs in recent years? Butler was a fifth seed in 2010 and a No. 8 seed in 2011, advancing to the NCAA Championship game twice.


Four years ago the Dallas Mavericks were the No. 4 seed in the West, then knocked off everyone on the way to a surprising title.


There's another factor that stands out, best summed up in a famous quote: "It is not the critic who counts. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat."


That was not from a coach but Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States. The hard work he was describing about the man "In the Arena" could apply to any NBA star pulling on sneakers and battling for the right to advance to the championship over the next two months.


It takes teamwork and effort, lots of effort, to hoist the crown at the end of a long season. San Antonio exemplified teamwork a year ago on the way to winning the title. The West has won 11 of the last 16 NBA titles.


This week, I'm taking a closer look at the top contenders in the Eastern Conference.


Cleveland Cavaliers: Cleveland started slow with new pieces all around, anchored by LeBron James. They struggled on defense, too, but as the calendar turned so did the Cavs, roaring down the stretch looking ready to make a run to the Eastern Conference championship. Lebron James (26 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 7.3 APG) has paced himself but still has had a monster season, tutoring 23-year old Kyrie Irving. Starting power forward Kevin Love (16 PPG, 10 RPG) is still a force and the Cavs added depth with J.R. Smith and Iman Shumbert in mid-season. If there’s any weakness it might defense, bottom 10 in field goal shooting allowed, along with a free throw percentage that is in the middle of the pack. Still, they look like the team to beat in the East and the Cavs are 12-2 ATS against the West. They are also 37-14 over the total playing on two day’s rest.


Atlanta Hawks: Where did these kids come from? In case you’ve forgotten, one year ago Atlanta was 38-44. The outstanding backcourt leads the way behind 6-7 Jeff Teague (16 PPG, 7 APG) and sharpshooter Kyle Korver, a pair of unselfish players, which is why Atlanta has been Top 3 in assists all season. Paul Milsap (17 PPG) and Al Horford (15 PPG, 7.4 RPG) have stayed healthy up front and the bench has been outstanding. And what balance: The Hawks are Top 10 in points scored and allowed, as well as field goal shooting defense. The Hawks are 11-29 ATS on two day’s rest, though 13-6-1 ATS against the East. Cracks in the armor? They haven’t played anywhere near that 36-5 run before the All-Star break.


Chicago Bulls: If this team from the Windy City could ever get healthy…Even banged up they’ve been a force in the East. The offense has improved from a year ago with the additions of Pau Gasol and 6-10 rookie Nikola Mirotic, but the heart and soul of this team remains defense and rebounding. Joakim Noah anchors the physical frontcourt and the defense is one again Top 10 in field goal shooting allowed, a necessity in April. That defense helps on the road: The Bulls are 20-8 'under' the total on the road against a team with a winning home record.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) Wonder what New Orleans Pelicans thought about the NBA rescinding Russell Westbrook's 16th technical foul, which allowed him to play Monday night against Portland? Pelicans/Thunder are tied for the last playoff spot.

12) Kris Byant has seven RBI in his first five AAA games; when will the Cubs bring him up? Pretty bovious he is major league-ready.

11) Since the start of 2014 season, lefthanded hitters are 17-144 (.149) against Mets' lefty reliever Jerry Blevins, with six walks and 44 strikeouts.

10) In addition to Urban Meyer making $6.5M a year, he also gets the use of a private jet for 50 hours a year, up from 35 in his last contract.

9) Pepsi replaces Coke as the official soft drink of the NBA; ton of money in this stuff. When I stayed at the Westgate Hotel in Las Vegas last November, they were in midst of switching from Coke to Pepsi and ran out of regular Coke while I was there. No bueno. In my humble opinion, Coke is way better.

8) Speaking of the NBA, I'm probably not renewing my NBA League Pass for next year; the product just isn't good enough to justify the expense. Too many guys taking nights off; good teams rest guys for playoffs, bad teams do not try hard enough to win.

If someone who likes basketball as much as I do doesn't want the League Pass, thats bad news for the NBA- they need to stretch out their schedule to create less back/backs, so players will try to play 82 games again.

7) Ron Baker/Fred Van Vleet are both coming back to Wichita State next year, which means the Shockers will be a preseason top 10 team. Decisions like this make or break programs; it gives Gregg Marshall another year of national TV exposure and more time to recruit their replacements.

6) Stuff like this reminds me of when Rob Evans was coach at Arizona State; he went 18-14 in 2005 with Ike Diogu his best player- they seemed like a team on the rise, but then Diogu left a year early for the NBA, the Sun Devils fell off the cliff and Evans got fired. Had Diogu stayed and ASU made the NCAAs, Evans gets a contract extension and the course of their program is way different.

5) Virginia took a hit with Justin Anderson going to the NBA; Cavaliers will still be good, but they're out of the preseason top 10 now. Tony Bennett has no chance of being fired; they're still a strong program, but they're not going to be a threat to get to the Final Four now.

4) Transfer list for college basketball is now over 450 kids; lot of turnover all over the country. There are 351 D-I teams. Kids don't like to sit on the bench anymore; if they ain't playing, they ain't staying.

3) Tigers' pitcher David Price says that every time he is consistently throwing 95-96 mph, which he doesn't always do, he gets "randomly" tested for drugs before his next start. He doesn't think it is a coincidence.

2) Forget to mention this yesterday; the catch George Springer made Sunday in Arlington was amazing-- it saved the game in extra innings. He robbed the Rangers of a game-winning grand slam and the Astros won three innings later.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this week's major-league schedule:

Bullish bullpen

Six relievers, 15 combined appearances, 16.1 total innings, no runs. That is the line of perfection the Kansas City Royals’ bullpen boasts through six games, all wins for Kansas City. More of the same can be expected this week against the Minnesota Twins, who are tied for the fewest runs scored (13) in Major League Baseball.

Beasts of the East

All five teams in the always-entertaining American League East scored at least 28 runs in their first two series of the season. The Toronto Blue Jays crossed the plate 38 times. At the same time, all five gave up at least 27 runs—including 33 allowed by the New York Yankees. The over is a combined 22-6 in games played by AL East Clubs.

Save situations

The San Diego Padres won three in a row to end their four-game series against the San Francisco Giants and newcomer Craig Kimbrel saved two of those victories. He is perfect through four appearances with his team (4.0 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts). But the Atlanta Braves are not yet missing him. Atlanta (5-1 SU, 4-2 O/U) is 4-for-4 in save attempts, three courtesy of free-agent signee Jason Grilli.

Pitching Notes

* Matt Harvey of the New York Mets returned from a lost season because of Tommy John surgery to befuddle the Washington Nationals across six innings in his 2015 debut last Thursday. Harvey surrendered only four hits and one walk while striking out seven. Next up for the hard-throwing righty on Tuesday are the Philadelphia Phillies, whom he dominated two years ago to the tune of a 3-0 record in three starts and a 0.45 ERA in 20 innings.

* Seattle Mariners’ 22-year-old Taijuan Walker is set for what will presumably be his first full season in the majors (he appeared sparingly in 2013 and 2014). But he will not last long if he does not improve upon his first start. Last Friday against the Oakland Athletics, Walker allowed nine runs on nine hits and two walks in 3.1 innings during a 12-0 loss. The righty has to face the high-powered Los Angeles Dodgers in his next start on Wednesday.

Hitting Notes

* Though Sunday’s action, only two American League hitters (with enough at-bats to qualify) are batting better than .500. Both reside on the Detroit Tigers. In addition to Miguel Cabrera (.520, 2 HR, 8 RBI), Jose Iglesias (.526, 2 SB) has also started in fine form for Detroit (6-0 SU, 4-2 O/U)

* Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies is dealing with some early-season struggles. The slugging southpaw has not yet left the yard and he is not hitting for average, either. Howard is 4-for-23 (.174) with no homers and one RBI. Philadelphia (2-3-1 O/U) scored just 16 runs in its first six outings.

Totals Streak

New York Yankees (5-1 O/U): The Yankees are scoring plenty of runs (31 through six games) but giving up even more early in the season. An apparently-rejuvenated Alex Rodriguez is batting .300 with six RBIs. Next up for New York is a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles (4-1-1 O/U).

Injury Notes

* Cleveland Indians’ catcher Yan Gomes suffered a sprained knee in this past Saturday’s loss to the Detroit Tigers and an MRI confirmed that he will be out 6-8 weeks. Gomes was off to a 3-for-20 start this season for Cleveland (2-4 SU, 3-3 O/U), but he hit .278 with 21 home runs and 74 RBI in 2014.

* The news is much better for the Washington Nationals (2-4 SU, 1-4-1 O/U), who need an injection of offense after crossing the plate a mere 13 times in their first two series. Jayson Werth (shoulder) has been activated from the disabled list in time to face the Boston Red Sox from Monday through Wednesday.

Weather Watch:

Weather is supposed to cooperate for most games, but there is a 40 percent chance of showers at Camden Yards for Tuesday's New York Yankees-Baltimore Orioles clash.

MLB April Overs bring May Unders for baseball bettors

The first week of the 2015 MLB season has been a windfall for Over bettors, who enter Monday’s action with a 53-35 Over/Under count so far this year. That’s a 60.23 percent winning clip for the Over including an incredible 14-0-1 Over/Under record in Sunday’s action on the diamond.

While those early results are intriguing, this pattern of Overs in April is nothing new to seasoned baseball bettors. Over the past 14 MLB campaigns, the opening month of the calendar is the only month of the season to actually lean towards the Over more than the Under.

From 2000 to 2014, MLB regular games played in March and April are a combined 2,677-2,625-248 O/U – playing Over 50.5 percent of the time. That trend flips in May, when teams have gone 2911-3059-312 O/U with a 51 percent Under clip. And they’ve continued to stay below the oddsmakers’ number for the remaining months of the baseball season:

March/April 2000-14: 2677-2625-248 O/U (50.5% Over)
May 2000-14: 2911-3059-312 (51% Under)
June 2000-14: 2789-2944-292 (51% Under)
July 2000-14: 2736-2873-273 (51% Under)
August 2000-14: 2934-3108-306 (51% Under)
September 2000-14: 2799-2902-275 (51% Under)
October 2000-14: 138-189-17 (58% Under)

The last four years (2011-2014), games played in the first month of the season (March/April) have gone 753-717-64 Over/Under, a winning clip of 51 percent for the Over. And in the previous two seasons, games in that same time frame are a profitable 401-358-31 O/U for a winning Over rate of 53 percent. Last year, games in March and April finished 207-176-19 O/U – 54 percent to the Over.

While May has been the annual turning point for MLB totals bettors, the last four years haven't been such a sharp decline from Overs to Under. May has produced a 827-770-90 Over/Under record from 2011-14 (52% Over), with last year boasting a breakeven 199-199-26 O/U mark. However, June 2011-14 has witnessed a noticeable swing in the totals market with games going 722-826-72 O/U - 53 percent Under.

So far in 2015, MLB teams are scoring a combined total of 8.34 runs a game to open the schedule and there are just five teams that have actually gone Under the betting total more often than not in that first week (Cubs, Cardinals, Phillies, Nationals and Astros).

The 2014 MLB season averaged just 8.14 combined runs per game, the lowest scoring rate in the majors since 1969. Scoring in the major leagues has been on the decline over the past 15 years, with pundits pointing to the use of advanced pitcher/hitter analytics, increased roles for relievers and the end of the steroid era which boosted scores in the late 90s/early 2000s.

As pitchers find their form and bullpen roles are settled, those offensive numbers will follow suit as previous seasons and likely decline, taking with it that lean to the Over. Interesting enough, despite the rash in Overs so far in 2015, pitchers are boasting a MLB-wide 3.70 ERA – the lowest collective earned run average since the 1952 season. Last year, pitchers finished with a MLB-wide 3.74 ERA which registered as the lowest ERA since 1988.

Athletics keep cashing Over wagers to start season

The Oakland A's defeated the Houston Astros by a score of 8-1 to extend their streak of cashed Over bets to six Monday. The A's are the top Over play in the bigs with a record of 7-1 Over/Under heading into Tuesday's action.

Oakland has tallied 51 runs through its first eight games - tied for second most in the AL with the Detroit Tigers.

The A's will continue their series with the Houston Astros Tuesday evening. Oddsmakers have tabbed the game with a total of 8.5.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The New Orleans Pelicans moved one step closer to their first playoff appearance since 2011, getting 24 points from forward Anthony Davis to dispatch the Minnesota Timberwolves 100-88 on Monday.

It was the fifth win in six games for the Pelicans, who currently hold the eighth spot in the Western Conference and can clinch a trip to the postseason with a win in their final regular-season game, Wednesday night at home versus San Antonio. If the Pelicans lose to the Spurs, New Orleans could still earn a playoff berth if Oklahoma City also loses its final regular-season game.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Guard Klay Thompson scored 42 points, leading Golden State to a victory over Memphis.

The Warriors won their 17th consecutive home game and struck a painful blow to Grizzlies' hopes of landing the No. 2 playoff seed in the Western Conference or winning the Southwest Division. Memphis sits one game behind San Antonio and Houston with one game remaining.

Guard Jordan Adams came off the bench to lead Memphis with 19 points. Guard Russ Smith had 16 points off the bench, and forwards Zach Randolph and JaMychal Green scored 10 apiece.

LOS ANGELES -- Remaining in the hunt for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, Los Angeles posted a victory over Denver.

The Clippers earned their sixth consecutive win, and they recorded their 13th victory in 14 games and their 20th in 27 since the All-Star break. They remained tied with San Antonio and Houston in the battle for the No. 2 seed, though the Southwest Division winner would beat the Clippers in a tiebreaker.

Power forward Blake Griffin led the Clippers 22 points, and he added nine rebounds and eight assists. Shooting guard J.J. Redick had 20 points, as did center DeAndre Jordan, who also contributed a game-high 21 rebounds. Denver small forward Wilson Chandler led all scorers with 32 points.

CLEVELAND -- Cavs forward LeBron James had 21 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his second triple-double of the season.

The Cavs looked ready for the playoffs, provided they make it there healthy. All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving did not play in the second half Monday with what the team described as tightness in his right hip. He had 12 points and three assists before he was pulled for precautionary reasons.

NEW YORK -- Rookie forward Nikola Mirotic scored 26 points, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers in the final 81 seconds of the third quarter when Chicago took control to prevent Brooklyn from clinching a playoff spot.

Mirotic had his 11th game with at least 20 points, but his biggest baskets helped the Bulls go from being up 78-63 to 87-65 entering the fourth quarter.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Guard James Harden scored 29 points and Houston remained alive in its quest for the Southwest Division title.

PHILADELPHIA -- Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Carter-Williams said it was "great to be back and see some familiar faces" in Philadelphia. And he sent most of them home unhappy.

Carter-Williams, last year's NBA Rookie of the Year who was traded to Milwaukee on Feb. 19, scored 30 points. He matched his season-high point total, shooting 11 for 17 from the floor. He also had five rebounds and five assists.

Jazz 109, Mavericks 92

SALT LAKE CITY -- Rookie point guard Bryce Cotton topped all scorers with 21 points, and center Rudy Gobert had a big game to help Utah to its seventh win in nine games.

Gobert finished with 20 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks to lift the Jazz to their second win in a row against a playoff-bound team after Saturday's victory at Portland.

Guard J.J. Barea led Dallas with 18 points, while big men Charlie Villanueva and Amar'e Stoudemire each contributed 15 points.

Kings 102, Lakers 92

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Forward Omri Casspi continued the hottest scoring spell of his career with a game-high 26 points, and Sacramento used a 12-1 run late in the fourth quarter to hand Los Angeles a historic loss Arena

Casspi needed only 13 shots to record his eighth straight game in double digits, the longest streak of his career, and helped send the Lakers to their 60th loss, the first time in the franchise's 67-year history that it has lost that many. Casspi has averaged 19.9 points per game during his eight-game streak.

Forward Derrick Williams added 20 points, and forward Carl Landry contributed 14 for the Kings. Guard Jordan Clarkson scored 23 points to pace the Lakers.
