[h=4]WalMart[/h]The Walmart store at Admiral Boulevard and Memorial Drive in Tulsa, Okla., on Monday, April 13, 2015. MATT BARNARD/Tulsa World

“Plumbing issues” abound at Wal-Mart supercenters, as the Admiral Place and Memorial Drive location was only one of five across the nation suddenly shut down Monday.
In addition to the <!--p:BodyJustified-->Tulsa location<!--p:BodyJustified-->, supercenters in <!--p:BodyJustified-->Brandon, Florida<!--p:BodyJustified-->; <!--p:BodyJustified-->Pico Rivera, California<!--p:BodyJustified-->; <!--p:BodyJustified-->Midland, Texas;<!--p:BodyJustified--> and <!--p:BodyJustified-->Livingston, Texas,<!--p:BodyJustified--> were all closed Monday, with just hours notice given to employees.<!--p:BodyJustified-->
In every case, various Wal-Mart spokespeople said the locations had plumbing problems. News outlets in Midland and Pico Rivera were told the stores had “two years” worth of plumbing problems, the same as the Tulsa World was told Monday.<!--p:BodyJustified-->
All outlets also received the same statement on the closure, attributed to various Wal-Mart spokespeople, which read: “As part of an effort to ensure all of our stores are fully serving the needs of our customers, we regularly assess the conditions of our stores. Due to ongoing plumbing issues that will require extensive repairs we are temporarily closing the (store).”
The various outlets were also all told by the company that the stores would be reopened as soon as possible, but the estimated closure time would be six months.
Local employees were told they could apply to transfer to other locations, though if they weren’t eligible, they would receive regular pay for 60 days and might receive severance benefits based on how long they’ve worked for the store, company officials said.
The Tulsa store previously employed 400 full-time and part-time associates. When the store reopens, individuals will have to reapply for the jobs.
Erica Jones, the spokeswoman for Wal-Mart who spoke to the Tulsa World, said all five stores had the highest number of plumbing issues in the chain.
“It’s all the same thing,” she said. “We have attempted to address these plumbing issues without disrupting operations, but determined that due to the number of incidents, the costs associated with the plumbing, and the ongoing impact to the shopping experience, it was in the best interest in the stores to take the time and invest the resources needed to resolve these issues.”
However, Elizabeth Nutt, division chief for environmental public health with the Tulsa Health Department, said the last issue reported at that Wal-Mart was a rodent sighting in 2013 the department couldn’t confirm.
Inspections are done at the facility quarterly by the Tulsa Health Department, with the last held in February.
“We didn’t notice any problems then, though that’s not to say they didn’t have any kind of plumbing issues,” Nutt said.
The inspections cover all manner of facility plumbing, including the toilets, drains, ice machines and dish washers, she said. When a business is closed for any kind of problem — either failing three rounds of tests in a row or a sudden infrastructure emergency — it’s rare to be closed for 30 days or more.
“The only thing that would close a facility for us would be if sewage was backing up into the facility, or if they didn’t have hot water, or any water at all,” Nutt said.
Wal-Mart officials contacted the department Monday and requested the store be completely closed out of the Tulsa Health Department’s system, she said.
“If they were to reopen, they would have to reapply for their licenses,” Nutt said. “But their renewals were coming up soon, so they might not have wanted to deal with that while they were closed.”
Gary Davis, a project manager for York Plumbing, said it would be unusual for a plumbing problem to take six months to fix, even at a supercenter.
“I can’t even imagine what it could be, unless it’s under the floor,” he said. “That means they’d have to cut the floor and remove the existing piping. That would take awhile, but that wouldn’t take six months.”
Davis said he believes even extensive plumbing problems under the slab could be tackled section by section, without having to close the entire store.
At this point, the five targeted Wal-Mart locations have little in common. The Admiral and Memorial location had been a headache for the Tulsa Police Department, as <!--p:BodyJustified-->crime statistics indicate there were 1,500 larcenies committed there<!--p:BodyJustified--> between 2012 and 2014, far above the number reported at other Wal-Mart locations.
However, Matt Parrish, public information officer for the Livingston Police Department, and Sean Geske, a sergeant with the Pico Rivera Sheriff Department, both said they hadn’t had problems with their Wal-Mart locations.
“We’ve had a good working relationship with them, and there hasn’t been any spikes in shoplifting that we know of,” Geske said.
In November, 23 protesters were arrested in front of the Pico Rivera Wal-Mart. The protest was organized by OUR Wal-Mart, a group of employees calling for higher wages and better treatment of employees.

Went in the Home Depot restroom over last weekend and damn what a shit hole. Broken faucets, broken urinals, towel dispenser beat up pretty bad. You'd think they would have this fixed being in a Home Depot and all.

This Walmart story is bizarre. How much plumbing does a Walmart have? 6 or 8 restrooms? They could replace all the plumbing in the building in a day or two; including all new fixtures.

Something else is happening there.

Don't forget about the sprinkler systems, the drainage under the floors, stock areas, and if they have a food section with butchers, etc.

[h=1]Walmart Employees: Store Closures Due To Labor Dispute Retaliation, Not Plumbing[/h]April 20, 2015 5:17 PM

[h=4][/h]
PICO RIVERA (CBSLA.com) — The sudden closure of several Walmart stores for what the company said was plumbing repairs has raised questions among employees who say the closures are a retaliation over a labor dispute.
Laid-off workers, along with their supporters, took to the parking lot outside the now-closed Walmart store in Pico Rivera on Monday to demand a federal injunction to get the store reopened, citing unfair labor practices.
“They should at least try a little better to place us,” laid-off worker and mother of three Candice Rodriguez said. “I think there’s a lot of positions that we can have, and I think it’s not right what they did to us.”
Walmart closed five stores nationwide last week for up to six months, citing the same issues from store to store.
The company released a statement addressing the issue, reading: “We don’t believe there is any basis for an injunction. As we have said all along, these stores were closed temporarily so we could fix the ongoing plumbing issues.”
The workers, meanwhile, aren’t buying the plumbing excuse, stating rather that the closures were retaliation by the company for demands for better wages.
While Walmart did not agree to put a representative on camera, the company did send a list of some 50 plumbing-related complaints, ranging from broken handles to overflowing drains.
Under federal law, the over 500 laid-off employees of the Pico Rivera store must be paid for 60 days, after which Walmart says it will hope to transfer some to other stores. Regardless, workers at Monday’s rally say federal regulators will intervene and get the store reopened before their pay and benefits run out.

I read an article that speculated the five closings were actually due to a listeria outbreak. Really tough to get rid of.

That would make a lot more sense than payback for a labor dispute.

Labor dispute does make sense though.....that has been thier biggest headache for years.

In thier statement, Walmart stated that employees must re-apply for thier jobs.

Doing this also sends a very strong message across the entire company as to the lengths that Walmart will go to in regards to labor unrest

But why close the other four stores? Only one store was having the dispute/protest right?

Walton family worth about $175 billion, doubt they'll worry about it.

Perhaps to send a message.

If they were to only close that one than maybe it would be too obvious. Clearly I'm speculating but there has to be a reason besides plumbing problems.

It's also hard to get rid of that Meth lab smell that seems to so popular in Wal Marts these days

walmart is a public company, anyone that wants to own a piece of it just needs to buy a share. It's around $80 a share and yields about a 2.5% dividend.

they along with most retailers are facing the same two problems, 1. enough workers to transport goods to the store and 2. getting goods to sell

there is a huge shortage of good to sell, the docks have been tied up for months as the dockworkers want more money. even with this shortage of goods to transport, there is still a shortage of truckers to get the goods to the stores. imagine what it would be like if they had goods to ship.

anyway, people that are out of work have a decision to make:

continue on unemployment or some government program that pays your bills while you sit at home
or
become a trucker and make $35 to $45k per year and be responsible for your own bills

not say all americans are choosing the sit home choice, but if you look at the labor participation rates for the last 6 years they are on a steady decline.

the government likes to boast that unemployment has gone down from 10% to 5% over the last 6 years, but that is only because the participation rate has gone down by approx the same amount.

grocery stores depend on government food stamps, walmart was smart to combine food with junk, so when food stamp recipients come in to get the food they need to not starve to death any extra cash they might have in their pockets goes towards high margin trinkets.

those high margin trinkets is where walmart profit is, and if they can't get the trinkets and even if they could they have no way to move them to the stores. answer is to shut down the stores that rely on the trinket margin to make a profit.

killing multiple birds with one stone, solves this problem along with many others.

the owners of walmart (shareholders) should be smiling.
the non-owners of walmart should consider become an owner.

As far as people making a decision....... Obama increases all the subsidies and makes it easier for people to do nothing. Illigals will pick up the slack.

And don't forget...... if you need a raise for still doing nothing....... have some more kids..... ignore them and dump them into the economy..... that will really help.

And then some dumbass promotes an idea to pay people $15/hour for working at burger places. Go figure!

Youre absolutely correct. This country was doing so much better before he became president. I am very confused though, why do people only bring up people on Welfare? Why does noone bring up all the companies that get tax deals from both states and the federal government? Companies have an incentive to move jobs overseas and that seems to be ok with people for some reason.

Agree Nick.... that's why I use the word "subsidies" to cover all the give-a-ways handed out to all the lazy asses.

Of course, as we all should have realized....... took quite a while before Obama could be criticized for ANYTHING. Like I knew they would.... people were all so fearful of getting labeled a racist..... not many where willing to tell the truth. Yes he is a very intelligent man...... but he has used the office to serve his own agendas worse than most men have.

And..... speaking of men....... Is Hillary gonna slip in because the other party has not got enough brains to even provide a decent candidate? Another Bush...... this dumbass could screw up a wet dream!

And..... maybe most importantly..... Nick...... you need a different picture...... one with the classic yellow sport coat...... to match your screen name! Come on man!

Why does noone bring up all the companies that get tax deals from both states and the federal government?

grocery stores and farmers are some of the biggest welfare recipients in the country, farmers get money to grow it, stores get paid with money given to citizens.

you saw what happened when the government gives money to farmers, all the small farmers got screwed and the more business savy became HUGE.

food stamps make it so we don't end up with one big nationwide store, although we are getting close to just having food distribution centers and no one pays for food because it'll become a 'right' just like healthcare... now you have the right to force a Doctor and Nurse to take care of you.

the "affordable FOOD act" is coming within our lifetimes.

if it weren't for the government a lot of americans would be dead from exposure and starvation.
