Floyd Mayweather: I'm a better fighter than Muhammad Ali

No athlete is untouchable.

Someone will always try to argue that LeBron James is better than Kobe Bryant, Kobe is greater than Michael Jordan, or MJ is greater than Bill Russell. Each angle has valid arguments in its defense.

But Muhammad Ali? As far as boxing lore is concerned, he’s the greatest of all time. Even Floyd Mayweather’s strongest supporters might concede that debate.
Just don’t ask Mayweather himself.

In an all-access interview with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, the 47-0 fighter sets the record straight.

“No one can ever brainwash me to make me believe that Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali was better than me. No one could ever brainwash me and tell me that,” Mayweather told ESPN. “But one thing I will do - I’m going to take my hat off to them and respect those guys because those are the guys that paved the way for me to be where I’m at today.”

Mayweather further defends his stance by pointing out that Ali lost to Leon Spinks, who only had seven fights under his belt at the time, and that Ali’s victory over George Foreman was, in Mayweather’s opinion, bush-league.

As with any “all-time” debate, Mayweather’s argument has holes in it. Nonetheless, you have to admire his confidence.

The entire feature is pretty cool, and filled with other hot takes, so definitely give it a watch.

Reminds me of the guy that claimed that Tyson would KO Ali in 10 out of 10 fights.

Mayweather is a jack-off.

And any prudent person should be very skeptical of his supposed huge sports bets as well. Something does not smell right!

Assorted ways to produce those tickets and not take much risk.

Mayweather is right and it has nothing to do with my Mayweather fandom... I'm a huge Ali fan too... But todays' athletes are far superior from then. Diet, advanced training ect...

Mayweather despite having a huge impact on boxing will never have the impact that Ali had.. that's the criteria for the GOAT in my opinion ... so in that regards Muhammad Ali is the Greatest of All Time...

But the words Mayweather said," No one can ever brainwash me to make me believe that Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali was better than me.".. that is accurate...

Not so sure about that Diet, Advanced training thing.... Those were FIGHTERS back then...

IMHO .....Mayweather would have gotten his @ss kicked in if he fought in that Era

Just found this ....

[h=1]Bob Costas: A Prime Sugar Ray Leonard Beats Floyd Mayweather[/h]
<iframe src="http://bleacherreport.com/video_embed?id=JqMmhtdDom5jqgPTdsGlzAWju04UWMhk" width="630" height="355" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" seamless></iframe>

The debate surrounding Floyd Mayweather and his place as an all-time boxing great has raged on for the past decade. His detractors will point to the fact that his opponents have been handpicked, while others spend time wondering how Mayweather would have stacked up against some of the greats of the 1980s—including the iconic Sugar Ray Leonard.
Legendary broadcaster Bob Costas falls under the latter group, going as far as to claim Leonard would have handed Mayweather his first professional loss.
Both in their prime, would Sugar Ray Leonard be able to take down Floyd Mayweather? Check out the video and let us know!

I would LOVE too see advanced analytics on this. You know some boxing broadcast will says the force of pounds behind punches and the speed at which they were thrown... if there was a way to calculate these older fighters...

I would guess they would be a little slower and with a little less power because of the advances in training

I don't think Ali was the best fighter of all time. matter of fact, I was not a fan.

if I said who I thought was, I would show my age. lol
