David Price had one of the worst starts of his career the last time he faced the New York Yankees. The left-hander doesn't figure to have a repeat performance Wednesday night given how well he's pitched for the Detroit Tigers so far.


Price has given up one earned run and 13 hits in 22 1-3 innings while striking out 20 and walking five, but he has one win to show for it after receiving seven runs of support in three outings.


That victory came on opening day after Price (1-0, 0.40 ERA) pitched 8 2-3 scoreless innings against Minnesota. His defense let him down April 11 at Cleveland as he gave up three unearned runs in 5 2-3, and he allowed one run over eight innings in Friday's 2-1 walk-off win against the Chicago White Sox.


"That's the best I've felt all year," Price told MLB's official website. "I've felt better each start of the season. I felt good five days ago, and I didn't get the results I feel I should when I feel that good. But today, I got good results."


That wasn't the case Aug. 27 against the visiting Yankees, who knocked Price out of the game with nine straight hits in the third and scored eight runs off him that inning.


Price was the first pitcher to allow nine straight hits in a game since Houston's Bob Forsch also gave up nine against Cincinnati on Aug. 3, 1989.


When asked about the second-shortest start of his career Tuesday, Price smiled as he said, "What happened? I don't know what you're talking about. It was crazy."


Price is 10-6 against New York with a 4.03 ERA, his second-highest against any AL team.


He'll now try to help the Tigers (11-3) bounce back from Tuesday's 5-2 loss after they won 2-1 in the opener of this four-game series. Detroit has been held to two or fewer runs in five of its last seven games after averaging 7.3 in its first seven.


Chris Young and Stephen Drew hit their fourth homers Tuesday for New York (7-7), which has won four of five.


Adam Warren (0-1, 4.82) makes his third start for the Yankees after allowing four runs and six hits, including two homers, over four innings in Friday's 5-4 win at Tampa Bay.


"Obviously, that we won makes me feel better about the outing," Warren said. "There's a lot of things I want to work on between this and the next outing."


The right-hander is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in four relief appearances against Detroit, with shortstop Jose Iglesias going 3 for 4 when facing him. Iglesias was batting .439 before going 0 for 4 on Tuesday and striking out with the bases loaded to end the game.


Yankees catcher Brian McCann is 7 for 14 with three home runs against Price, while center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury is 16 for 49 (.327) with a homer, four doubles and two triples. Price has struck Alex Rodriguez out 17 times in 43 at_bats.

Among the best defensive teams in the majors last season, the Baltimore Orioles seemed to be continuing that level of play this year.


Lately, though, their fielding has headed in the opposite direction.


The suddenly error-prone Orioles try to avoid their first three-game skid of the season Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.


Only five teams in the majors made fewer errors than Baltimore's 87 last season and the team's .986 fielding percentage tied for third. More solid defense followed this year with the Orioles (7-7) committing an AL-best two errors in their first 10 games.


However, pitcher Chris Tillman made an error at Boston on Saturday and Everth Cabrera's miscue the following day was Baltimore's first by an infielder. Three more errors contributed to five unearned runs being scored by the Red Sox in Monday's 7-1 loss, and another two led directly to the Blue Jays' six-run second inning in Tuesday's 13-6 series-opening defeat.


Edwin Encarnacion triggered the big second inning with a leadoff homer and went deep again in the sixth. He entered Tuesday in a 3-for-26 slump with one RBI in seven games.


Jose Bautista homered in the seventh after rookie Jason Garcia narrowly missed hitting him with the second pitch of the at-bat. Three pitches later, Bautista responded with his fourth home run, stopping to admire it before rounding the bases.


That didn't go unnoticed, and outfielder Adam Jones shouted at Bautista as he left the field.


'It's not his first, it's not a walk-off, it's in the seventh inning,' Jones said. 'Let's not walk halfway down the line. Respect the game. I know he does, but at that moment right there he didn't, and when it happens against my team, I'm going to take offense to it.'


Unperturbed, Bautista defended his actions.


'You throw at me, I'm not going to forget and if I get you right after, I'm going to enjoy it,' he said. 'And I did. I have no regrets about it.'


Toronto (7-7) has won three of four against Baltimore this season, totaling 36 runs and 45 hits, including 23 for extra bases.


The shoddy defense overshadowed another dismal start by Bud Norris, who allowed a career high-tying nine runs in 2 1-3 innings as his ERA ballooned to 17.42.


Orioles starters have failed to complete six innings in six straight games, a trend Ubaldo Jimenez hopes to end.


Jimenez (1-0, 0.00 ERA) didn't get the chance to pitch very long in his last outing. The right-hander tossed 3 2-3 hitless innings at Boston on Friday before he was ejected for hitting Pablo Sandoval in the shoulder.


'It was my first one. I was shocked,' Jimenez said. 'He's a good hitter and I'm trying to go inside. '


Jimenez was outstanding in his season debut against Toronto on April 11, yielding one hit over seven shutout innings in a 7-1 victory. Most impressive was the one walk he issued, which would represent a dramatic improvement from the 77 he totaled in 125 1-3 innings last season.


Jimenez is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA in his last three starts overall against the Blue Jays, but he has an 8.68 ERA in three career appearances at Rogers Centre.


He's done an excellent job keeping Bautista and Encarnacion in check, limiting the sluggers to a .145 average (8 for 55) with one homer.

Quality starting pitching has been the catalyst behind hot stretches for both the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals and produced a seemingly predictable low-scoring series opener.


Doug Fister and John Lackey hope to continue the trend.


Fresh off ending St. Louis' winning streak, the Nationals send Fister to the hill seeking their sixth victory in seven tries Wednesday night in D.C.


Washington's starters have a 1.31 ERA over its last five games and got six solid innings from Gio Gonzalez in Tuesday's 2-1 win. Bryce Harper had an RBI single in the third for the Nationals (7-7) before Yunel Escobar's walk-off homer in the 10th.


Escobar, acquired from Oakland via Tampa Bay in a trade that sent reliever Tyler Clippard to the A's, had missed the previous two with a groin injury.


'He's got life to him. Teammates love him here,' Gonzalez said of Escobar. 'He's just a different ballplayer.'


The Cardinals (8-4) scored at least four runs four times during their five-game winning streak. Matt Holliday hit a tying RBI single in the ninth and finished 4 for 4. He's batting .425 while hitting safely in all 12 games.


'We were getting some hits,' manager Mike Matheny said after his team went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position, 'but not the consecutive ones.'


Holliday has homered in two career at_bats against Fister (1-0, 0.69 ERA), who looks to be the next Washington starter to deliver a solid effort.


Fister pitched 6 1-3 scoreless innings of Washington's 3-2 loss to Philadelphia in his season debut April 11 before overcoming four walks and allowing two runs in 6 2-3 innings of Thursday's 5-2 win over the Phillies.


'I think he got a little tired in the last inning,' manager Matt Williams said. 'Other than that he was good, in command the whole game.'


The right-hander allowed four runs - including homers to Holliday and Matt Adams - over six innings of a 5-2 loss in his only career start against the Cardinals on June 15.


Lance Lynn turned in a 6 1-3 solid innings Tuesday, giving St. Louis' starters a 1.14 ERA over the last six. Lackey (1-0, 2.77) made his second start in that stretch, striking out eight in seven innings of a 4-0 win over Milwaukee on Thursday.


He allowed four runs in six innings of St. Louis' 5-4 loss to Cincinnati on April 10.


'I think I've just gotten better at locating stuff,' Lackey said. 'I definitely moved the ball a little bit better than I did earlier on when I was younger. I trust myself throwing strikes and being able to throw strikes with multiple pitches.'


Matheny has noticed the difference in Lackey, who is one strikeout away from 1,800.


'His stuff just keeps getting better to me,' Matheny said. 'So far, this season I really like the way he's throwing the ball.'


The right-hander hasn't faced the Nationals since giving up two runs in eight innings of a 3-2 win while with the Los Angeles Angels on June 23, 2008.


Reliever Mitch Harris, called up by the Cardinals after outfielder Peter Bourjos was placed on the paternity leave list, didn't pitch in the series opener. He would be the first Navy graduate to appear in a major league game since 1921.

Cole Hamels is the majors' leader in opponent batting average on balls in play.


Unfortunately for him, more than half the hits he's allowed have left the ballpark.


In Wednesday night's matchup with the Miami Marlins in Philadelphia, Hamels faces the tough task of trying to shut down Giancarlo Stanton, who is heating up at the plate.


Hamels (0-2, 5.00 ERA) has a .122 opponent batting average on balls in play, however seven of the 12 hits he's allowed have been homers. He gave up 14 home runs all last season, allowing 0.62 per nine innings for the NL's sixth-best mark. He's at 3.50 home runs surrendered per nine this season.


After serving up two more homers and yielding five runs in six innings in Thursday's 5-2 loss at Washington, Hamels said he's elevating pitches.


'It's not a place I want to be in,' he said, 'but I know I have to make the adjustment.'


While the home run rate is a tad alarming, the slow star isn't a complete surprise. The left-hander is 1-7 with a 5.16 ERA in 11 April starts since 2013, compared to a 2.77 ERA in all other months.


Hamels has 18 strikeouts in 18 innings and has struck Stanton out 17 times in 43 at_bats. The slugger has also taken him deep three times among his 12 hits.


Stanton, batting .370 in his last seven contests, homered for the third time in five games Tuesday but the Phillies got two-run homers from Ryan Howard and Freddy Galvis in a 7-3 win. Philadelphia (5-9), which ranks near the bottom of the league with eight homers and a .323 slugging percentage, had gone five straight games without a home run.


'You go out there, you swing, balls come off the bat and guys make plays,' said Howard, who had two hits to raise his average 34 points to .209. 'Sometimes it doesn't go your way. All you can do is continue to go out there and swing, and just try to put good at_bats together.'


Miami's losing streak reached five and manager Mike Redmond didn't get an endorsement from owner Jeffrey Loria after meeting with him and general manager Dan Jennings before the game.


'We have to grind it out,' reliever Mike Dunn said. 'Pressure? We have to go out and win. Plain and simple.'


The Marlins (3-11) have been hurt by subpar pitching during their skid with starters posting a 7.03 ERA. The slide began with Thursday's 7-5 loss to the New York Mets when Jarred Cosart (0-1, 4.76) gave up five runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings.


The right-hander regressed a bit after yielding a run and three hits over six innings against Tampa Bay in his season debut. This will be his first game against the Phillies but he is no stranger to the organization. Cosart was one of the prospects the Phillies traded to Houston for Hunter Pence in 2011.


Hamels has yielded three runs or less in all 10 starts against the Marlins since 2013 to compile a 2.73 ERA, but a lack of run support has left him with a 1-4 record.


Stanton is batting .429 with four homers in his last seven games at Philadelphia, but the Marlins have lost 18 of their last 24 there.

Starlin Castro can relate to Kris Bryant and Addison Russell, the two most recent highly touted prospects to make their major league debuts for the Chicago Cubs.


Now a three-time All-Star at just 25 years old, Castro is setting an example for his new teammates with his stellar play.


The Cubs look to take the first three of this four-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night at PNC Park.


Chicago (8-5) has won three of its last four with Castro providing plenty of offense. He's 9 for 19 in that stretch, including a tying two-run single in the ninth inning of Tuesday's 9-8 come-from-behind victory.


Castro also had an RBI single in the third and hit a solo homer in the sixth. Wellington Castillo followed Castro's big hit in the ninth with a groundout that scored Bryant for the go-ahead run.


'We're not going to win that game last year or the year before,' Castro said. 'We (would) quit. Now we never quit. We play nine innings.'


Bryant has had a solid series, going 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs in Monday's 5-2 win before driving in two runs and finishing with two hits Tuesday. He's 8 for 14 with three doubles, five walks and only one strikeout since going 0 for 4 with three Ks in his major league debut Friday.


Russell, who was called up from Triple-A Iowa, went 0 for 5 with three strikeouts batting ninth and playing second base.


'I'm just happy to get the first (game) out of the way,' Russell said. 'I kind of see what it's like up here. I'm excited for what tomorrow brings.'


Russell was acquired from Oakland on July 3 for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, who re-signed with the Cubs this offseason. Hammel (1-0, 5.11 ERA) seeks a better outing in this contest after not looking very sharp in his first two.


He allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings of a 9-5 win over Colorado on April 11 before being charged with four runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings of Friday's 5-4 loss to San Diego.


The right-hander went 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA in four starts against Pittsburgh last season. Andrew McCutchen has homered twice off Hammel in his career, but is batting .222 after going 0 for 3 Tuesday.


The Pirates (6-8), who had won three in a row entering this series, got homers from Josh Harrison leading off their half of the first and Starling Marte in the second.


Jung Ho Kang, the 27-year-old rookie who went into the game 1 for 13 over his first eight, had a go-ahead bases-clearing double in the seventh and finished 2 for 4.


'I felt like it was an opportunity to prove myself and show who I am,' Kang said.


Pittsburgh looks to bounce back behind Vance Worley, who is coming off a solid outing.


Worley (1-1, 5.84) allowed two runs over six innings of a 6-3 win over Milwaukee on Friday. He was able to work out of a fifth-inning jam after the Brewers tagged him for six runs in a loss April 11.


The right-hander has walked six - two intentionally - over 12 1-3 innings, though, and he issued four while allowing three runs in 4 2-3 innings of Pittsburgh's 5-3, 11-inning win Sept. 5 the last time he faced them.


Worley is 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA in four career starts versus the Cubs. Castro is 1 for 8 with six strikeouts against Worley.

Though the New York Mets have already been bit by the injury bug, it hasn't slowed them down yet.


Kevin Plawecki looks to build off an impressive debut and help them extend their nine-game winning streak Wednesday night against the visiting Atlanta Braves.


Already without David Wright and a number of relievers, New York's latest injury was a broken pinky for catcher Travis d'Arnaud, prompting the Mets to call up Plawecki - one of their top prospects - from Triple-A.


Though d'Arnaud was hitting .317 with a team-best 10 RBIs, the club didn't miss a beat with Plawecki starting behind the plate in Tuesday's series opener. He was 2 for 4, scored two runs and threw out a runner to push the Mets (11-3) to their longest winning streak since taking 10 in a row in July 2008, and two shy of the team record 11 last accomplished in 1990.


The start is their best since going 13-3 in 1986.


"Just happy to have the first one out of the way," Plawecki said. "Just happy it came out the way it did."


Curtis Granderson came in hitting .146 with no RBIs, but was 3 for 5 and drove in four runs, while Juan Lagares had two RBIs, stretching his hitting streak to eight games.


The Mets will likely need a better effort from Dillon Gee (0-1, 7.59 ERA) to continue streaking, though Atlanta is countering with a struggling starter of its own. Gee's poor second half of 2014 has seemingly carried over, as he's 3-8 with a 5.40 ERA in 15 starts since last year's All-Star break after going 4-1 with a 2.56 mark in his first nine outings last season.


Gee was 3-0 with a 1.30 ERA during a four-start stretch against the Braves before yielding five runs and eight hits in five innings of a 5-3 road loss on April 11. Freddie Freeman homered against him, and he gave up two more home runs over 5 2-3 innings in New York's 7-5 win over Miami on Thursday, not recording a decision.


He was hurt by the long ball early in 2014 as well, giving up five homers while going winless in his first three starts.


Despite his poor performance to begin the season, Gee's 48 straight starts of at least five innings is the majors' longest active streak and two shy of Dwight Gooden's club record.


Eric Stults (0-1, 6.30) has also been taken deep three times in his first two starts, accounting for five of the seven runs against him in 10 innings. The 25 homers he gave up in 2014 tied for the fifth most in baseball.


The left-hander is 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA in seven matchups with the Mets. He allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings in Atlanta's 5-3 victory April 10.


New York's John Mayberry has only started two games this season but could be a good choice Wednesday as he's 5 for 11 off Stults with three doubles and homered in the last meeting.


Atlanta (8-5) is hoping Stults can stop the bleeding in its rotation. Braves starters have posted a 6.52 ERA while the club has dropped four of six. They logged a 2.56 mark during the 6-1 start.

Joe Kelly began the season on the disabled list not knowing how long it would take to get back to full strength.


The injury certainly hasn't seemed to effect the Boston Red Sox starter over his first two outings.


Boston looks to deal host Tampa Bay a fifth straight defeat as Kelly takes the mound Wednesday night.


A strained right biceps landed Kelly on the 15-day DL, but he appeared to be fully healthy while allowing one run, one hit and striking out eight through seven innings of an 8-4 win over the New York Yankees on April 11.


Kelly (1-0, 2.13 ERA) had to battle a bit more Friday, throwing 118 pitches - two short of his career high - while giving up two runs and four hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 3-2 walk-off win over Baltimore.


"They were fouling off some pitches," said Kelly, who is 13-1 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts when he throws at least 97 pitches. "They put together some pretty tough at_bats."


The right-hander has never faced the Rays (6-8), who were shut out for the second time in three games after falling 1-0 in Tuesday's series opener. The run came across in the third when second baseman Ryan Brett made an errant throw to first while trying to complete a double play, allowing Ryan Hanigan to score.


Mookie Betts slid hard into second to disrupt Brett, who was making his first major league start.


'It's things we've talked about,' Betts said. 'That was my chance to put it into play. Nothing dirty, just trying to break up the double play and it worked out that time.'


Things got worse for Brett in the bottom half of the inning as he injured his left shoulder while being picked off first base. The Rays already have 10 players on the DL.


"We'd like to get to the point where the guys that you planned for are all out there," manager Kevin Cash told MLB's official website. "There is some head scratching going on, you know, 'Is this really happening again?' You feel bad for Ryan Brett. He just got up here."


Boston's David Ortiz went 0 for 3 with a walk while appealing a one-game suspension handed down earlier Tuesday for making contact with an umpire in Sunday's loss to the Orioles.


'They do what they've got to do,' Ortiz said. 'It's part of the game. They ain't perfect.'


The Rays will look to snap their skid behind Nathan Karns, who has been up and down over his first three outings.


Karns (1-1, 4.58) allowed six runs and walked four in a loss to Baltimore on April 7 before giving up two runs and two hits in seven innings of an 8-5 win over Miami on April 12.


On Friday, the right-hander allowed two hits - both solo homers - and walked four in five innings of Tampa Bay's 5-4 loss to the New York Yankees.


Karns has stuck out 17 in 17 2-3 innings, but he's also walked 10. He's never faced the Red Sox in eight major league starts since coming up with Washington in 2013.


Boston has outscored the Rays 23-4 during a three-game winning streak in the series.

Led by baseball's highest-scoring offense and most dominant bullpen, the Kansas City Royals are enjoying their best start in 12 years.


They'll go for already their third series sweep Wednesday night against the visiting Minnesota Twins.


Kansas City (11-3) followed Monday's 7-1 win with a more dramatic 6-5 victory Tuesday, continuing its best start since opening 16-3 in 2003. Mike Moustakas was 3 for 5, hitting his third homer and driving in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. He's one of six players hitting .314 or better while appearing in at least 12 games for the Royals, who are averaging a major league-best 5.8 runs.


Tuesday marked Kansas City's eighth come-from-behind victory, a credit to its reliable stable of relievers. Jason Frasor, Chris Young and Wade Davis combined for 3 1-3 scoreless innings after Jason Vargas was tagged for five runs in 5 2-3.


Despite being without injured closer Greg Holland, the bullpen lowered its ERA to 0.64, the second-lowest by a team through 14 games going back to 1969 since Minnesota's 0.62 mark in 1972. The three runs allowed in five innings in Thursday's 8-5 loss to the Twins marks the only time an opponent has scored against Royals relievers.


Kansas City could soon also be without right-hander Kelvin Herrera, who is appealing a five-game suspension for throwing behind Oakland's Brett Lawrie on Sunday.


Starter Jeremy Guthrie (1-0, 5.54 ERA) needs to do a better job of keeping the ball in the park after yielding three solo shots while allowing four runs over six-plus innings in Kansas City's 6-4 win against the Athletics on Friday.


He's 5-1 in his last seven starts against the Twins, though he's given up nine runs over 13 innings in the last two.


Joe Mauer and Kurt Suzuki each had two hits Tuesday and have enjoyed success against Guthrie. Mauer is 9 for 25 with three homers, while Suzuki is 8 for 21 with a home run and three doubles.


Minnesota (5-9) fell to 1-7 on the road behind a 5.95 ERA. Casey Fien was charged with the loss, giving up two runs in an inning of relief.


"A loss always hurts," he said. "When I don't my job that's what happens."


Scheduled starter Mike Pelfrey (0-0, 4.50) was solid in a five-inning effort during Minnesota's 3-2 win over Cleveland on Friday, though his command failed toward the end. Pelfrey allowed one run and three hits but issued four walks, all in the fourth and fifth innings.


The right-hander has been awful in three starts against the Royals, giving up 13 runs and 23 hits in 12 1-3 innings while going 0-2. His 9.49 ERA against them is his highest among opponents he's faced at least three times.


Omar Infante is 16 for 39 against Pelfrey, but he's missed two games with a strained left groin. Manager Ned Yost said he could have been used in an emergency situation Tuesday.


Moustakas, Eric Hosmer, Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez are all hitting .429 or better off Pelfrey in at least six at_bats.


The Royals swept three three-game series all of last season.

Perhaps Bryan Price's media-directed tirade was the spark the Cincinnati Reds needed to win back-to-back games. Or because they're facing the team with the majors' worst record.


The revitalized Reds look to hand the Milwaukee Brewers an eighth consecutive defeat Wednesday night at Miller Park.


Hours after the Cincinnati manager unleashed a profanity-laced outburst Monday aimed at media reports regarding player availability he thinks would put his team at a competitive disadvantage, Cincinnati (7-7) snapped a four-game skid with a 6-1 win over Milwaukee. After Price apologized for the profanity but stood by his message Tuesday, the Reds rode grand slams from Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier to a 16-10 victory.


Price's players supported his message and passion.


"If you need any more emotion to play better, then you ain't going to be here for long," said catcher Devin Mesoraco, whose status with a hip injury Price felt had not been accurately reported.


Cincinnati scored 19 runs losing seven of eight heading into this series but has surpassed that total against a Brewers' pitching staff that's allowed a league-high 6.2 runs per game and has a 5.31 ERA while off to the worst start in club history at 2-12.


Frazier is batting .375 with two home runs in his last six at Milwaukee.


The Reds hope to stay hot at the plate and provide some support for Johnny Cueto (0-2, 2.14 ERA), who looks to avoid opening with three straight losing decisions for the first time.


Cincinnati has scored four runs with the right-hander in the game through three starts this year. Cueto gave up an earned run while lasting seven innings in each of his first two starts but yielded four over another seven during Friday's 6-1 loss at St. Louis.


Cueto, who yielded a three-run double to Yadier Molina in the seventh, isn't concerned about that last outing or his record.


'I feel really good. I don't think I have to change anything,' he said. 'I just have to continue doing what I'm doing.'


The right-hander is 7-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 10 home starts against the Brewers, but 0-3 with a 4.89 ERA in six at Milwaukee. Cueto, though, has not pitched at Miller Park since 2012 and all but one of those was a quality start. The Reds have totaled eight runs with him on the mound at Milwaukee.


Milwaukee's Elian Herrera is 2 for 3 against Cueto and went 2 for 5 with a grand slam and five RBIs in his season debut Tuesday.


With Carlos Gomez (hamstring), Jonathan Lucroy (toe) and Scooter Gennett (hand) on the disabled list, the Brewers broke out after scoring a major league-low 31 runs in the first 13 games.


"We'll just see if we can get a good outing pitching and see if we can continue the offense," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.


After utilizing a nasty curveball to allow two hits and strike out nine in seven innings of a 6-0 home win over Pittsburgh in his season debut, Milwaukee's Jimmy Nelson (1-1, 1.50) wasn't as sharp while giving up three runs in five innings of a 6-3 road loss to the Pirates on Friday.


In his only start versus Cincinnati on July 22, the right-hander allowed three runs in six innings while not factoring in the decision of a 4-3 win.


Zack Cozart is 0 for 4 against Nelson, but 4 for 9 with three of his four homers and six RBIs in the series. He's already matched his home run output from 2014 in just 51 at_bats after hitting four in 506 last year.

The series got a long break after beginning with Atlanta’s 99-92 win on Sunday, and Brooklyn is working on small fixes. “We played hard,” Nets coach Lionel Hollins told reporters of Game 1. “I had no fault with the effort of our guys. We just have to be smarter and execute better.” Atlanta went 21-of-22 from the free-throw line in the win to help survive a subpar effort from Paul Millsap but could have a tougher challenge in Game 2. Center Al Horford is questionable for the contest after suffering a dislocated finger in the opener.

The aftermath wasn’t much better for the Trail Blazers as their locker room motivation card became public and included the phrase “We don’t lose to Spanish players,” and Grizzlies star Marc Gasol, who is from Barcelona, Spain, was miffed about the meaning. “I don’t know where it comes from and I don’t know what it means,” Gasol told reporters. “I have better things to think about than what they’re writing on the wall.” Memphis’ domination in the opener marked its third double-digit victory over Portland this season and also handed the Trail Blazers their fifth straight loss overall dating back to the regular season. “Nobody is giving us a shot,” Portland point guard Damian Lillard told reporters. “Nobody is saying, ‘Portland is going to come in here and win the series.’ If anything, they’re doubting us.”

Sixth-seeded San Antonio was outclassed by third-seed Los Angeles and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was surprised at the level in which his club was dominated. “The game was their defense was better than our offense; that’s the bottom line,” Popovich told reporters. “Their aggressiveness, their physicality, their athleticism really hurt us offensively.” Point guard Chris Paul (32 points) and power forward Blake Griffin (26) combined for 58 points in the 107-92 victory but Clippers coach Doc Rivers expects a tougher challenge from the Spurs in Game 2. “They’re still the defending champs, and they’re going to be the defending champs every night,” Rivers told reporters. “We have a lot of confidence in our team but you just have to stay humble and respect who you’re playing.”

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you're betting. Whether it's a team looking past this week's opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots. Schedule spot


The Pittsburgh Pirates blow the dust off the suitcases this week, flying cross country for a date with the Arizona Diamondbacks starting Friday. The Bucs don’t have much down time to get their travel plans or home life in order before this nine-game road run that takes them into May. They host the Chicago Cubs for a day game Thursday, then immediately rush to the airport to catch their flight to Phoenix.


Last season, the Pirates avoided a situation like this, with at least a day between cross-country hikes. In 2013, the Bucs kicked off the season with a three-game home stand versus the Cubs that finished on a Friday and traveled overnight to play the L.A. Dodgers that Saturday, losing the opener 3-0 and getting swept in that three-game set, outscored 10-2.


Letdown spot


Gas was thrown on the Giants-Dodgers rivalry last October when San Francisco won its third championship in five years. The Giants continue to come through in October while Los Angeles spends millions on talent every offseason only to come up short. These National League West members picked up that rivalry this week with a three-game set in the Bay Area, and San Fran could be ripe for a letdown in the game immediately following the series finale Thursday.


San Francisco heads to Coors Field Friday, where letdown games usually involve the hometown Rockies sending a few balls over the fences at the homer-friendly park. The Giants were already swept by Colorado at home, getting outscored 10-3 in that series. San Fran has a 3.92 ERA on the road to start this season and the last time they went mile high, the Giants gave up 26 runs in three games to the Rockies.


Lookahead spot


The Golden State Warriors have cruised to two easy victories to open their first round NBA Playoffs series against the New Orleans Pelicans, winning 106-99 in Game 1 and 97-87 in Game 2 Monday. But while those games were rarely in doubt, outside of a slow start in Game 2, Golden State has burned backers who gladly gave the big points in those contests.


The Warriors are 0-2 ATS versus spreads of 12.5 and 13.5 points in the postseason and have actually struggled against double-digit chalk in recent weeks (1-6 ATS last seven). The Warriors are giving five points with the series swinging to New Orleans in Game 1 but bettors should beware over these next two games, especially if Golden State takes Game 3. They could start looking ahead to their possible Round 2 matchup, extending a 1-7 ATS record in their last eight overall.
