Preview: Braves (8-6) at Phillies (5-10)
Game: 1
Venue: Citizens Bank Park
Date: April 24, 2015 7:05 PM EDT

Aaron Harang was at a crossroads in his career after being unwanted by several teams before the Atlanta Braves gave him a chance in their rotation last season.

Harang made the most of that opportunity, and he's put together a fine start to 2015 after signing with the Philadelphia Phillies in the offseason.

The veteran faces his former team Friday night as the Braves visit the Phillies to open a three-game series.

Harang has appeared in the majors with seven teams over the last six seasons and also was released by Colorado and Cleveland in that stretch before pitching for either club.

He found some stability in 2014, going 12-12 with a 3.57 ERA in 33 starts for Atlanta. It marked his most outings and innings pitched (204 1-3) since 2007 while with Cincinnati.

Harang then signed a one-year, $5 million contract that includes incentives with the Phillies. He's 2-1 with 1.96 ERA after giving up three runs in six innings of Saturday's 5-3 win at Washington after allowing one run over 12 1-3 in his first two outings.

"(I'm trying) to get in and out of innings very quick. That's always key," Harang said. "The quicker you can get the guys off the field, the more they're going to go to bat for you."

Manager Ryne Sandberg has been impressed with Harang, who turns 37 on May 9.

"He's a veteran guy out there," Sandberg said. "He makes big pitches. He hung in there (Saturday) and gave us the quality start we needed."

Philadelphia's woes mainly have been due to a lack of offense. The Phillies (5-11) rank last in the majors with 41 runs and near the bottom with a .213 batting average after a 9-1 loss to Miami on Thursday.

Ryan Howard and Chase Utley sat out for Philadelphia, which scored on Cesar Hernandez's sacrifice fly in the ninth. The Phillies made two errors after having three in Wednesday's 6-1 defeat and are among the major league leaders with 17.

'We've got some work to do,' Sandberg said. 'We've got to tighten up our defense and play smarter.'

The Braves (8-7) had their own struggles at the plate while getting swept in a three-game series by the New York Mets, totaling six runs. Andrelton Simmons had two hits and two RBIs in Thursday's 6-3 defeat.

"We had more chances to get some more runs with guys on base," catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. "We hit some balls really hard that they made some nice plays on. But that's baseball."

Alex Wood (1-0, 3.93) takes the mound looking to help Atlanta avoid a fifth loss in six games. He pitched 6 1-3 scoreless innings before being charged with three runs and recording one more out in a 6-5, 10-inning loss at Toronto on Saturday.

The left-hander failed to record a strikeout for the first time in 38 career starts.

'It's kind of weird,' first baseman Freddie Freeman said. 'I don't think he had a strikeout all game, but he kept the defense in it and that's what a pitcher's got to do - keep us in the game. He definitely did that.'

Wood kept the Phillies off balance in two starts last season, striking out seven over eight innings of a 1-0 loss April 17 before allowing one run with eight strikeouts in six innings of an 8-2 victory July 20.

Preview: Nationals (7-8) at Marlins (4-11)
Game: 1
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: April 24, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

The highlight of Jordan Zimmermann's second straight All-Star season came when he pitched the first no-hitter in Washington in 83 years against Miami in the 2014 finale.

Off to rough start in 2015, the Nationals right-hander looks to get back on track while trying for another gem against the host Marlins on Friday night.

Thanks to a diving grab by former Washington left fielder Steven Souza Jr. on the final play of a 1-0 home victory Sept. 28, Zimmermann (1-2, 6.14 ERA) became the first major leaguer to toss a no-hitter in the nation's capital since the Senators' Bobby Burke in 1931.

'I thought there was no way this would ever happen," Zimmermann said after he struck out 10 and walked one.

After going 0-3 with a 4.81 ERA in his first six starts against the Marlins (5-11), Zimmermann is 7-0 with a 2.67 ERA in the last 11.

He opened this season by yielding a run in six innings of a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets, then gave up eight in 2 1-3 of a 9-4 loss at Boston on April 13. He was better five days later while allowing four runs - two earned - in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-3 loss to Philadelphia.

Though Zimmermann made progress, he also walked four.

"I have to clean that up and I'll do better next time," he told the Nationals' official website.

Washington (7-9) concluded a 4-3 homestand by dropping two straight to St. Louis but won eight of the final nine versus Miami in 2014, including five straight at Marlins Park - four by one run.

Ryan Zimmerman is 7 for 17 with three RBIs in the last four games and is apparently dealing with plantar fasciitis.

'Been bothering him for a while," manager Matt Williams said after Thursday's 4-1 defeat. "Pretty soon we're going to have to give him a break and sit him down."

That could come Friday considering Zimmerman's 3 for 13 with a home run versus Mat Latos (0-3, 10.24), who is trying to avoid dropping his first four starts for the second time.

The right-hander, who gave up seven runs in two-thirds of an innings in his Marlins debut April 7, lasted a season-high five and yielded two in Saturday's 5-4 defeat to the Mets.

Latos is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in seven starts against the Nationals.

Despite going 4-6 on its initial road trip, Miami won two of the three series and the last two games versus Philadelphia.

'We had a couple rough weeks,' said veteran Martin Prado, who had three hits and four RBIs in Thursday's 9-1 rout. 'We were swimming against the currents. Now, we are going with the flow, not trying to be a hero.'

The Marlins hope their modest surge turns into something bigger.

"(Thursday) was a great day, and now we need to focus on (Friday)," said manager Mike Redmond, who failed to receive an endorsement from owner Jeffrey Loria at the beginning of the trip.

"Just go out and try to get better each day, and I think we've done that."

Miami's Adeiny Hechavarria is 4 for 23 against Zimmermann, but is batting .462 with nine RBIs in the last 10 games after going 1 for 22 in the first six.

Preview: Cubs (8-6) at Reds (8-7)
Game: 1
Venue: Great American Ball Park
Date: April 24, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

The Chicago Cubs seemed ready to carry momentum from a convincing victory into another divisional matchup, but instead enter the weekend with plenty of bullpen concerns.

The Cincinnati Reds, meanwhile, enter this three-game series Friday night on the tail-end of their extended season-opening run against the NL Central.

Chicago (8-7), which earned back-to-back victories in Pittsburgh on Monday and Tuesday, failed in a comeback effort Wednesday in a 4-3 loss and then blew a three-run lead in a 5-4 defeat to the Pirates on Thursday.

"We probably took the first two games away from them," manager Joe Maddon said. "They took the last two away from us, that's how this division is going to play this year."

Poor middle relief was the culprit for the Cubs in the series finale. Starter Kyle Hendricks lasted 5 1-3 innings before ceding the mound to Edwin Jackson, who allowed one earned run and one inherited runner to score before Brian Schlitter yielded Pittsburgh's go-ahead run in the seventh.

A similar performance against Cincinnati (8-8) would be a dramatic step backward from the relief pitching they put forth in a series win against the Reds on April 13-15, when they allowed no runs and only four hits in 8 1-3 innings of work.

Jon Lester (0-2, 6.89 ERA) will make the start Friday. The left-hander, who allowed six runs in six innings against the Reds on April 13, has yet to earn a win since signing with Chicago in the offseason, but expects to build from his slow start moving forward.

"I'm usually not a fast starter," Lester said. "Usually I guess it's maybe mid-May, June where you get into that rhythm of every five days and arm strength has built up and it's started to warm up and everything falls into place."

Mike Leake (0-1, 3.92) outdueled Lester in that victory and will again oppose the Cubs' No. 1 starter. Leake had his best outing of the young season his last time out, allowing just two runs and four hits through eight innings against St. Louis.

He surrendered four runs in his outing against the Cubs, but will face a slightly different lineup this time with top prospects Kris Bryant and Addison Russell having joined the fray.

Bryant is 9 for 25 with seven RBIs since his MLB debut April 17, while Russell has suffered a slower start, going 2 for 13 with six strikeouts through three games.

The Reds followed their series defeat in Chicago with a winless trip to St. Louis in which they scored only four total runs, but they rebounded with three wins in four tries against Milwaukee. They have yet to play a team from outside the NL Central.

Although they fell 4-2 in the series finale Thursday, the Reds' offense - highlighted by a five-homer, 16-run outburst Tuesday - impressed manager Bryan Price.

"Coming back and winning three out of four in this series (turned) what looked to be a disastrous road trip into, not a good one, but certainly a better (one) than it could have (been)," Price said.

Chris Coghlan is a perfect 8 for 8 against Leake in his career. He went 3 for 3 against the Reds starter earlier this month with a home run, a double and two runs.

Preview: Cardinals (9-4) at Brewers (2-13)
Game: 1
Venue: Miller Park
Date: April 24, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

The Brewers got a much-needed victory to start distancing themselves from the worst start in franchise history.

Matt Garza would like to do likewise to put aside his early season struggles as Milwaukee hosts the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

Kyle Lohse helped the Brewers (3-13) end an eight-game losing streak and avoid a sweep by Cincinnati with seven strong innings in a 4-2 victory Thursday. His effort gave Milwaukee back-to-back quality starts for the first time this season, as the rotation has posted a 5.42 ERA while going 3-11.

"We have to keep it going," Lohse told MLB's official website. "We can't get them all back right now; we have to keep our heads down and keep grinding it out. That's all we can do."

Garza (1-2, 5.40 ERA) has been grinding with middling results, sandwiching two shaky starts around a victory at St. Louis on April 13. He allowed five runs in six innings of a 5-2 defeat at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The right-hander labored against the Cardinals, walking five and allowing six hits in 5 2-3 innings, but yielded only two runs in the 5-4 win. Garza has struggled against St. Louis' Jhonny Peralta, Matt Holliday, Jon Jay and Matt Adams, who are a combined 41 for 90 (.456) with three homers and eight doubles in the matchup.

Matt Carpenter is 3 for 15 against Garza, but he's the hottest of the Cardinals hitters going into this three-game series. He is batting .429 during a 10-game hitting streak after going 2 for 4 in St. Louis' 4-1 win at Washington on Thursday.

St. Louis - seeking its first 11-4 start since 2008 and eighth win in nine games - leads the majors with a 2.06 ERA and has limited opponents to a .142 average with runners in scoring position. The Brewers went 5 for 27 in such situations in losing two of three to the Cardinals earlier this month.

Carlos Martinez (1-0, 2.08) seeks a third straight effective start. The right-hander allowed a solo homer and two other hits over 86 pitches in six innings of a 5-2 victory over the Reds on Saturday. He's struck out 13 in as many innings this season.

"He backed off at times, I think, because he saw he had better control and better movement when he was off his max effort," manager Mike Matheny said. "That is a huge step that is hard to get a young player to take."

If the hard-throwing Martinez has shown a weakness, it has been giving up all three of his runs on solo homers. Though he struggled in his only career start against Milwaukee on July 13 - allowing four runs in four innings of an 11-2 defeat at Miller Park - the right-hander has a 1.96 ERA in 12 lifetime appearances against the Brewers.

Catcher Yadier Molina, who had a scheduled day off Thursday, has gone 12 for 28 with six RBIs in his last seven games.

Preview: Giants (6-10) at Rockies (8-7)
Game: 1
Venue: Coors Field
Date: April 24, 2015 8:40 PM EDT

The San Francisco Giants appear to have righted the ship after an ugly beginning. The Colorado Rockies look like they're also getting on track after a week-long slump.

The Giants go for their fourth straight victory Friday night as they open a six-game road trip against the Rockies, winners of two in a row after a five-game losing streak.

San Francisco (7-10) has turned it around since matching the franchise's worst 12-game start since moving to the Bay Area, completing a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday for its fourth victory in five contests. Justin Maxwell singled home the winning run with one out in the 10th inning of the 3-2 final.

'Winning is fun. I can't wait to get on the plane and celebrate with the team,' Maxwell said.

Maxwell, Angel Pagan and Joe Panik each had two hits for the Giants, who handled a Dodgers club that came into the series with seven straight wins.

'It was a great series,' manager Bruce Bochy said. 'It could have gone either way the last two games. It's been a tough homestand and this made it not so bad.'

Crucial to the turnaround has been pitching. San Francisco has posted a 1.70 ERA in its last four victories after recording a 4.88 mark during the eight-game losing streak that preceded this five-game stretch.

Chris Heston (2-1, 0.87 ERA) helped put an end to that skid with 7 2-3 innings of one-run ball in a 4-1 win over Arizona on Saturday. The right-hander was also outstanding in his previous start April 13 against Colorado, a 2-0 home loss in which he allowed one earned run in seven innings.

That defeat came amid the Giants' eight-game slide and opened the Rockies' three-game sweep at AT&T Park, during which San Francisco managed three runs.

Colorado (9-7) has won four straight and five of six in the series. The Rockies took two of three in the most recent matchup at Coors Field from Sept. 1-3, scoring 26 runs while the Giants had 23.

Colorado has also pitched better in winning its last two games, allowing five runs after being ripped for 41 in the five-game slide that preceded them.

Jordan Lyles threw 6 2-3 innings of one-run ball and Corey Dickerson hit a go-ahead home run leading off the fifth - his third solo shot in two days despite playing with pain caused by plantar fasciitis - to lift the Rockies to a 2-1 home win over San Diego on Thursday.

The left fielder, who went 4 for 6 in those contests, is 8 for 22 (.364) with two home runs and six RBIs in his last six games against San Francisco despite going 0 for 4 in the most recent one April 15.

Dickerson, who scored both runs Thursday, was removed in the eighth for precautionary reasons when the Rockies made a double switch.

'I'm not too worried about it,' said Dickerson, who didn't start Tuesday because of his bothersome foot. 'I just try to put it in the back of my mind.'

Eddie Butler (1-1, 2.25) has turned in three strong efforts in as many starts this season, although he's failed to last six innings in any of them. The second one came opposite Heston as he helped to spoil the Giants' home opener, throwing 5 1-3 innings despite walking six with five hits.

The right-hander allowed two runs in five innings in Sunday's 7-0 loss to the Dodgers. He's received two total runs of support.

Preview: Pirates (7-8) at Diamondbacks (8-7)
Game: 1
Venue: Chase Field
Date: April 24, 2015 9:40 PM EDT

The last pitch Paul Goldschmidt saw in 2014 fractured his left hand in a matchup with Pittsburgh, leaving Arizona without its star for the final 52 games.

Diamondbacks reliever Randall Delgado plunked Pirates star Andrew McCutchen the following day in retaliation, and McCutchen later said, "Just remember: I don't forget."

The clubs meet for the first time since that series Friday night when the Pirates begin a nine-game trip in Arizona.

Goldschmidt went 12 for 26 with a homer, two doubles and a triple during a seven-game hitting streak against the Pirates (8-8) before he was hit during his first at-bat by then-Pittsburgh reliever Ernesto Frieri on Aug. 1.

McCutchen expected the Diamondbacks to throw at him, but they waited until the ninth inning the next day, and McCutchen took exception to the timing. He went 3 for 5 the rest of the series and is batting .476 during a six-game hitting streak against Arizona (8-7).

It's likely tempers have cooled since the clubs split that four-game set. Goldschmidt appears back to his old self and hit three homers during an eight-game hitting streak that ended with Wednesday's 8-5 win over Texas.

Chris Owings homered and tripled, and Nick Ahmed doubled in the fourth after going hitless in his previous 19 at_bats. Owings is 6 for 13 over his last three after starting the season 5 for 37.

"The issue we had with both of them is just swinging at bad pitches," manager Chip Hale said. "When they don't swing at balls, they're pretty good hitters and they're learning that."

Josh Collmenter (1-2, 3.38 ERA) may not match the career-high three hits he had Friday against San Francisco, but he's hoping to build off his solid performance on the mound after pitching a four-hitter in a 9-0 win.

"It's fun when you have stuff working like that," Collmenter said after his second career shutout. "The fastball command was huge for me and I was able to move the ball in and out. Everything for me plays off of that."

The right-hander gave up three runs in 5 1-3 innings of Arizona's 7-4 win July 31 the last time he faced the Pirates. Neil Walker homered off Collmenter in that contest and is 4 for 8 against him in his career.

Walker had an RBI single Thursday in a three-run sixth inning that helped Pittsburgh rally for a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs and a four-game series split.

McCutchen, who has been bothered by a nagging left knee injury, was scheduled to have the day off before he struck out as a pinch-hitter.

"It was arguably for me one of the best team wins since I've been here with what we had, what we went out there with, how we were able to battle," manager Clint Hurdle said.

Gerrit Cole takes the mound in this contest seeking another solid outing. Cole (2-0, 2.65) has won back-to-back starts, giving up one run and striking out eight in six innings of a 5-4 win over Detroit on April 13 before going the same distance and giving up one earned run in Sunday's 5-2 victory over Milwaukee.

The right-hander has struck out 20 in 17 innings while allowing a .190 average.

Cole gave up two runs in six innings of a 6-2 victory in his only start against the Diamondbacks on Aug. 16, 2013.

Preview: Dodgers (9-5) at Padres (10-6)
Game: 1
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: April 24, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Having been swept for the first time, the Los Angeles Dodgers are hoping that Zack Greinke can get them back on course by adding to his dominance over the San Diego Padres.

Adrian Gonzalez will also try to duplicate his most recent performance against Andrew Cashner on Friday night.

Los Angeles (9-6) had a seven-game winning streak halted Tuesday in San Francisco and also lost the next two matchups, both in walk-off fashion. Pedro Baez couldn't convert his first career save opportunity Thursday, giving up a run in the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss in 10.

The Dodgers are without closer Kenley Jansen until at least mid-May as he recovers from foot surgery.

"We've got a solid bullpen," catcher Yasmani Grandal said. "These things aren't going to happen too many times."

Having Greinke (2-0, 1.83 ERA) on the mound against San Diego (10-7) gives Los Angeles a solid chance to get back in the win column. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in eight matchups.

He gave up one run and two hits in six innings against San Diego in his season debut April 7, but the bullpen failed to hold on to a one-run lead in a 7-3 loss.

Greinke has since won back-to-back starts, yielding three runs in 6 2-3 innings to beat visiting Colorado 6-3 on Saturday.

Los Angeles batted .288 and had 63 runs in the first 12 games then hit .202 and scored six times against the Giants. The Dodgers scored 16 runs while taking two of three from the Padres to open the season.

They were at their best in the finale April 8 with Cashner (1-2, 2.65) starting. The right-hander allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings of a 7-4 loss, with Gonzalez hitting three solo homers off him.

Cashner was 1-1 with a 1.32 ERA in his previous six starts against the Dodgers.

Gonzalez went 10 for 13 with five homers in that series. He's batting .475 with seven home runs in a nine-game hit streak against his former team and is 9 for 25 with four homers when facing Cashner.

The six runs Cashner has allowed in two starts since have all been unearned. The Chicago Cubs scored twice in the first inning Sunday before he shut them down over the next five in a 5-2 win.

"I think the mental grind to kind of start the season has definitely been tough," Cashner told MLB's official website "I think today finally I settled down after the first, second innings, really started to make pitches."

The Padres settled for a split in their four-game series in Colorado this week when the lineup couldn't continue its torrid stretch. They totaled five runs in back-to-back losses after batting .314 with 32 runs in their prior four games.

San Diego will get its first look at Dodgers rookie second baseman Alex Guerrero, who is batting .474 with four homers and 12 RBIs in nine games since making his season debut April 11.

Preview: Indians (5-9) at Tigers (11-4)
Game: 1
Venue: Comerica Park
Date: April 24, 2015 7:08 PM EDT

Shane Greene just missed starting a series finale against his former team. Instead, it's coming against the worst team in the AL.

The right-hander has been one of the best pitchers in the majors through his first three starts with the Detroit Tigers, and Friday night's opener of a three-game home set against the Cleveland Indians should provide a favorable opportunity to reach 4-0.

Greene has a 0.39 ERA after allowing his first earned run along with five hits in seven innings of Sunday's 9-1 win over the visiting Chicago White Sox. He walked four after issuing one in 16 innings over his first two starts, but his manager wasn't searching for criticism.

"I don't think I expected him to be this efficient and throw this many strikes," Brad Ausmus told MLB's official website. "A young guy, I didn't realize he was going to be able to pound the strike zone the way he has. I hope it continues."

While throwing strikes could very well continue, maintaining results is very much in question. He's holding opponents to a .160 average, though he has 11 strikeouts in 23 innings, so he's depending greatly on the ball being put in play. His .188 opponent batting average on balls in play is significantly under the major league average a season after posting a .330 mark with the New York Yankees, which was 31 points over the average.

Rather than worrying themselves with any sort of imminent decline from Greene's unlikely pace, the Tigers (11-5) are probably concerned with an offense that produced nine runs while losing three of four at home to the Yankees. Thursday's 2-1 defeat featured a season-low three hits, and Detroit hit .220 in the series after batting .305 through a 10-2 start.

Nos. 2-4 hitters Ian Kinsler, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez were a combined 0 for 10 on Thursday. Kinsler is 0 for 12 in three games, and Martinez was 0 for 10 in the series.

"It is tough right now," Cabrera said. "It is tough to score runs."

Cleveland (5-9) has sustained a .220 average, and those struggles include a three-game home sweep at the hands of Detroit from April 10-12. The Tigers have won seven straight in the series and 10 of 11 while batting .336 and hitting 18 home runs.

Kinsler has hit safely in all 11 of those games, while Cabrera is batting .472 in 22 against Cleveland since the start of last season after going 11 for 14 earlier this month.

That presents a challenge for Danny Salazar, especially given the Indians' offense. They fell 6-0 to the White Sox on Wednesday to drop two of three in the road series.

"It's a hard way to pitch when we're throwing up zeros as an offense," manager Terry Francona said.

The top of the order is most to blame with Michael Bourn, Jason Kipnis, Michael Brantley, Carlos Santana and Brandon Moss batting a combined .209. Brantley only played in one game in the first series against Detroit and is batting .413 in his last 19 matchups.

Salazar's first start of the season was Saturday's 4-2 win in Minnesota, as he surrendered two runs while striking out a career high-tying 10 in six innings.

The right-hander is 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in five starts against Detroit. Cabrera (5 for 13), Martinez (5 for 14) and Kinsler (3 for 10) have all homered off Salazar.

Preview: Blue Jays (8-7) at Rays (7-8)
Game: 1
Venue: Tropicana Field
Date: April 24, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

Drew Smyly hasn't been stretched out during his rehab stint but with Tampa Bay's starting rotation ravaged by injury and the back end struggling, the Rays are ready to activate him from the disabled list.

He'll start Friday night's series opener against a Toronto Blue Jays team led by the red-hot Josh Donaldson, who has given Smyly trouble in the past.

Sidelined with left shoulder tendinitis, Smyly was one of four Tampa Bay starting pitchers to begin the season on the DL. He has looked sharp in three rehab starts, pitching 8 2-3 shutout innings while scattering two hits and three walks, but has not gone longer than 3 2-3.

The Rays (8-8) were considering giving him another start in the minors, but with the back end of their rotation posting a 9.26 ERA, they will take their chances with Smyly.

"I'm excited about getting the season going," the left-hander told MLB's official website. " ... Hopefully I can help the team any way I can. Whether that's five or six innings, that's great."

Smyly went 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA in seven starts for Tampa Bay after coming over from Detroit, where he was 6-9 with a 3.93 ERA in 21 games last season. The best outing of his career came at Toronto on Aug. 22, when he tossed a two-hitter in an 8-0 win for his only complete game.

This time, however, he'll have to contend with Donaldson, who is 4 for 6 with a homer and two doubles in their matchups.

Donaldson hit a two-run homer and doubled in Toronto's 7-6 win over Baltimore on Thursday and is batting. 459 with four home runs, four doubles and 10 RBIs in his last nine games. He was 7 for 16 with a double and three RBIs against the Rays last week.

The Blue Jays (9-7), opening a 10-game trip, dropped three of four at home to Tampa Bay a week ago, winning 12-7 but totaling five runs in the defeats.

Toronto is coming off a three-game sweep of the Orioles, playing the last two without Jose Bautista due to a right shoulder injury. Manager John Gibbons said Bautista will likely DH for a couple of days when he returns. He was 1 for 11 with a homer and four walks in last week's series against Tampa Bay.

Devon Travis was 7 for 15 with a homer and two doubles in last week's series while Edwin Encarnacion was hitless in 14 at_bats. Encarnacion and Bautista are a combined 0 for 7 against Smyly.

The Blue Jays turn to R.A. Dickey (0-1, 3.26 ERA), who gave up four runs and four hits - including two homers - in seven innings of Saturday's 6-5, 10-inning win over Atlanta, ending a streak of nine consecutive quality starts. The 40-year-old issued four more base on balls and appears to having a harder time than normal controlling his knuckleball. He is averaging 5.59 walks per nine innings after averaging 2.51 over the past five seasons.

The Rays rank third in the majors with 63 walks.

Five days before facing the Braves, Dickey yielded two runs and three hits while walking five in six innings of a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay. The righty is 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA in his last four starts in the series.

The Rays defeated Boston 2-1 on Thursday on Rene Rivera's run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth for a second straight win following a four-game losing streak.

Steven Souza Jr. started and went 0 for 4 after leaving Wednesday's game with right forearm cramps. He was 6 for 16 with two home runs and a double against Toronto a week ago.

Preview: Rangers (6-9) at Angels (6-9)
Game: 1
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: April 24, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

Despite a losing decision, Garrett Richards was encouraged with his much-anticipated return for the Los Angeles Angels.

As the right-hander aims to progress further, he'll try to carry over the success he enjoyed last season against the visiting Texas Rangers on Friday night.

Back on the hill for the first time since suffering a season-ending knee injury Aug. 20, Richards allowed four runs, five hits, walked four and struck out four in five innings of a 4-3 loss at Houston Sunday.

'Obviously, I have some things I have to tighten up, but it wasn't a terrible first outing,' Richards, who went 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA in 26 starts during his breakout 2014 season, told MLB's official website.

Manager Mike Scioscia agreed.

'I think he showed that, as far as delivering the baseball,' Scioscia said after watching Richards throw 100 pitches. 'And I think he also showed that moving around the mound, he's fine. His stuff is there."

For the most part, Richards' stuff was excellent while going 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA versus Texas last season. In the start right before he was hurt, Richards allowed two runs and struck out seven without a walk in 7 1-3 innings of a 5-4 road win over the Rangers on Aug. 15.

Winners in 15 of the last 19 against their AL West rival, the Angels (7-9) scored 18 runs while taking two of three at Texas last week.

Mike Trout went 6 for 12 during that set, and is 9 for 16 with seven runs scored in his last five games against the Rangers (6-9), who are 2-3 on their eight-game trip.

Trout hit .444 with three home runs and nine RBIs in Los Angeles' first 10 games but is 2 for 21 with no RBIs and seven strikeouts in the last six. Both hits came over 13 at_bats in a split of a four-game home set with Oakland.

Nick Tropeano pitched six strong innings and Kole Calhoun's two-run homer in the third was Los Angeles' only hit during Thursday's 2-0 victory over the Athletics. It was the first time since June 16, 1986, and the third time in club history the Angels won while recording one hit.

Wandy Rodriguez's only appearance versus Los Angeles came in 2007 with Houston, but he'll make his Texas debut Friday.

The veteran left-hander is making his first appearance since giving up six runs - one earned - in 1 2-3 innings against Baltimore for Pittsburgh on May 21. The Pirates released him nine days later.

Texas picked up Rodriguez on April 6 after Atlanta released him from a minor league deal earlier this month. The 36-year-old Rodriguez, 90-93 with a 4.03 ERA in 248 starts, had a 2.57 ERA without a record in two outings for Triple-A Round Rock.

"The velocity is 88 to 91 mph, the breaking ball is there, and the changeup is there," Rangers manager Jeff Bannister said. "The pitch-ability is still there. It's very similar to the guy I've seen in the past as far as the reports. He competes."

The call-up of Rodriguez gives Colby Lewis an extra day of rest and leaves struggling Ross Detwiler out of the rotation for the time being.

Adrian Beltre is batting .320 with a homer against Richards, and is 4 for 10 with a home run in three games after going 0 for 14 in his previous four.

Preview: Astros (8-7) at Athletics (8-8)
Game: 1
Venue: O.co Coliseum
Date: April 24, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

Once again shining in April, Scott Kazmir will try to help the Oakland Athletics regain their footing after an inconsistent road trip.

Dallas Keuchel will try to get the Houston Astros back in the win column when two of the top left-handers in the majors face off in Friday night's series opener in Oakland.

Kazmir (2-0, 1.33 ERA) is 6-0 with a 1.84 ERA in this month the last two seasons, winning his first four decisions in a season for the first time last April. A scarcity of run support and Eric O'Flaherty's blown save Sunday kept him from winning each of his first three starts this year.

He was charged with two runs in 7 1-3 innings against Kansas City but O'Flaherty gave up a pair of RBI doubles in the eighth of a 4-2 defeat.

"(Kazmir) pitched great," manager Bob Melvin told MLB's official website. "To go in the eighth like that over 100 pitches, he certainly did his job, we just couldn't finish it off."

That defeat was part of a 5-5 trip for Oakland (8-9), and the A's alternated wins and losses in the final six games. They went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and fell 2-0 to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday despite giving up one hit - Kole Calhoun's two-run homer.

"I can't remember the last time we got beat by one hit," Melvin said.

The Astros' four-game win streak was halted with a 3-2 defeat in Seattle on Wednesday.

Houston (8-7) went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position after going 6 for 16 in the first two games of the series. The Astros totaled 13 runs in those wins.

Keuchel (2-0, 0.90) will try to build on a third impressive outing in as many starts this season, as he yielded two hits in six innings while striking out seven in a 4-0 win over the Angels on Saturday.

"It's so easy to watch Dallas Keuchel compete and put up zeros and just assume that he's functioning perfectly because you're so used to it," manager A.J. Hinch told MLB's official website. "He really goes through lineups and competes his way through."

Keuchel went 1-0 with a 1.99 ERA in his last three starts against Oakland in 2014.

Kazmir has gone 3-0 with a 1.79 ERA in his past six starts against the Astros. He yielded one run in six innings with eight strikeouts in an 8-1 win at Minute Maid Park on April 13.

Oakland took two of three in that series. The A's have won nine of the last 12 home meetings with the Astros.

Jose Altuve is batting .369 in a 26-game hit streak against Oakland, the longest active one in baseball against any opponent.

Preview: Twins (6-9) at Mariners (6-9)
Game: 1
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: April 24, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Felix Hernandez has been nearly unhittable in his first two home starts, and the team he's about to face hasn't won a road series since early August.

The Seattle Mariners' ace will try to keep a promising start at Safeco Field going Friday night against the Minnesota Twins, who need their own No. 1 starter to get back to 2014 form.

Hernandez (2-0, 2.37 ERA), who has made two home starts sandwiching one in Oakland, has allowed two runs and four hits in 14 innings at home. Dating to his last 2014 start at Safeco, he's 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA and .082 opponent batting average while striking out 29 in 19 1-3 innings. The right-hander is 10-2 in his last 15 home starts dating to May 23, and among pitchers with at least 10 home starts in that time, he leads the majors with a 1.56 ERA and 0.77 WHIP.

The latest impressive effort came in Saturday's 3-1 win over Texas with Hernandez striking out 12 in seven innings of one-run, two-hit ball.

"Any time he's out there you feel like you're going to win one," shortstop Brad Miller told MLB's official website. "He came out and gave us exactly what we needed. When he gets out there, you know your fortunes can change pretty quick."

That's been especially true against Minnesota with a 3-0 record, 0.79 ERA and 0.65 WHIP in four starts over the previous three seasons. That comes despite Joe Mauer being 14 for 37 (.378) in their career matchups, while returning Twin Torii Hunter is 24 for 75 (.320).

He'll be opposed by Phil Hughes, whose individual matchups have been downright daunting. Hughes (0-3, 5.30) has faced Detroit's David Price and the Chicago White Sox's Chris Sale, but that's not the reason for his winless start after going 16-10 a season ago.

His control has been impressive - as it was all last season - with two walks in 18 2-3 innings, but he's been more hittable with a .308 OBA after a .268 mark in 2014. More of those also happen to be clearing the fence. The right-hander has allowed four home runs, and his 1.93 home runs per nine inning is up from 0.69 a season ago.

It's probably not a long-term concern considering Hughes had a 7.20 ERA through three starts a season ago.

"Maybe that's a sign the next one will be good," Hughes said. "But it's a slow progression and it's not like the light bulb just goes on and you're in midseason form. You gain a little bit of arm strength and command as you go along."

He might have to wait two more. April is far and away his worst career month with a 6-15 record and 6.05 ERA in 31 starts. None of those have come against Seattle, though, and Hughes has won his last two at Safeco without allowing an earned run in 14 1-3 innings. Mariners newcomer Nelson Cruz is 3 for 18 (.167) against him, while Seth Smith is 5 for 10.

Both Minnesota (6-9) and Seattle (6-9) are coming off victories to avoid a three-game sweep. The Mariners are 3-3 on a nine-game homestand after Wednesday's 3-2 victory over Houston, and the Twins won 3-0 in Kansas City for just their second victory in nine road games.

The Twins haven't won a road series since taking two of three in Houston from Aug. 11-13, going 8-18 since. They've had no such problems with Seattle, going 9-5 in the series with at least a split from four series over the past two seasons with three straight wins at Safeco.

Preview: Mets (12-3) at Yankees (8-7)
Game: 1
Venue: Yankee Stadium
Date: April 24, 2015 7:05 PM EDT

The Yankees haven't experienced a losing season since 1992, winning five World Series and garnering the bulk of New York's baseball attention in the process.

On the brink of setting two franchise records, the Mets now appear to be the best team in the Big Apple.

The Mets seek the club's best-ever start by setting a team mark with a 12th consecutive victory as the Subway Series begins Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

Thursday's 6-3 win over Atlanta completed a perfect 10-game homestand for the Mets (13-3), who have won 11 in a row for the first time since June 17-29, 1990. They also won 13 of 16 to start the 1986 season and went on to win their most recent World Series title.

The Mets have had six straight sub-.500 campaigns, but are surging despite David Wright missing the last eight games with a strained right hamstring.

'I think it's so rewarding here in this clubhouse to kind of see the fruits of the labor over the last couple years, to see guys grow,' said Daniel Murphy, who drove in four runs Thursday. 'It's a lot of fun to be a Met.'

The Yankees have been New York's marquee franchise for many years, even beating the Mets in five games to win the 2000 World Series. But the Yankees have missed the playoffs the last two seasons and were far from AL East favorites entering 2015.

The Yankees (9-7), though, have won six of seven after taking the final three of a four-game set with Detroit. Brian McCann drove in the go-ahead run with an eight-inning groundout in Thursday's 2-1 victory.

Alex Rodriguez, who is two homers shy of tying Willie Mays for fourth all-time, got the day off.

Rodriguez has driven in 11 of the Yankees' 85 runs that rank among the most in the majors, but the Mets will counter with Jacob deGrom as he looks to shut down another lineup.

After giving up seven hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 2-0 win over Philadelphia on April 13, deGrom (2-1, 0.93 ERA) struck out eight in seven scoreless innings of Saturday's 5-4 victory over Miami.

"You want to get better every time out," the right-hander said. "I just want to put us in a position to win."

Last year's NL Rookie of the Year hasn't given up a run since allowing a two-run homer in the first while going six innings of a 2-1 loss to Washington in his season debut April 8.

In his only start against the Yankees, deGrom gave up one run and four hits in seven innings of a 1-0 loss May 15. That was the finale of a four-game series split between two parks, with each club winning twice on the road.

The Yankees begin this three-game set behind righty Michael Pineda, who admittedly hasn't pitched well over his last two outings.

Pineda (2-0, 5.00) gave up five runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 6-5 win over Baltimore on April 13 before allowing three runs in 5 2-3 innings of Sunday's 5-3 victory over Tampa Bay.

The most important thing to manager Joe Girardi, though, is that the Yankees won both games.

'When you win six of seven, a lot of it has to do with your starting pitching,' Girardi said. 'They are holding teams down late into games and letting us get into the bullpen."

The Mets have won four straight meetings at Yankee Stadium.

Preview: Red Sox (9-6) at Orioles (7-8)
Game: 1
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Date: April 24, 2015 7:05 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles haven't won since knocking around Boston Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello last weekend.

The Orioles will try to right themselves at Porcello's expense Friday night to end their string of four consecutive defeats in the opener to a three-game series at Camden Yards.

Baltimore (7-9) tagged Porcello for eight runs and 12 hits in five-plus innings of an 8-3 victory Sunday but had to settle for a four-game split at Fenway Park the next day when its lineup produced four hits in a rain-shortened 7-1 loss.

The Orioles have been inconsistent at the plate and their rally from a seven-run deficit started a little too late in a 7-6 loss in Toronto on Thursday. Baltimore has scored six runs in two of its four defeats and a combined three in the other two.

Matt Wieters (elbow), J.J. Hardy (shoulder) and Jonathan Schoop (knee) are among the Orioles hitters who are on the disabled list. Ryan Flaherty, batting .300, has a sore right groin.

"We'll have somebody step up for us. We've just got to keep trusting," manager Buck Showalter said. "We'll see how Ryan is (Friday). We're already prepared if we need to do something. ... This too shall pass."

A second crack at Porcello could get the Orioles straightened out. The right-hander dropped to 1-2 with a 6.63 ERA in his first three starts with Sunday's defeat.

"You have to have a short memory and turn the page," Porcello told MLB's official website after that game. "I have these guys again in five days. I'll be ready to go."

Adam Jones had three of his four hits in that game off Porcello, including a three-run double that chased him in the sixth and a two-run home in the first inning. Jones leads the majors with a .424 average after going 2 for 4 on Thursday and is batting .400 in his last 20 games against Boston after an 8-for-16 performance last week.

The Orioles outfielder will try to provide some more support for Miguel Gonzalez (2-1, 2.55) in his second start against Boston (9-7) in six days. He gave up three runs and four walks in five innings while beating Porcello.

Gonzalez is 5-1 with a 2.89 ERA in seven career starts against the Red Sox, who have lost four of their last six overall.

The Red Sox dropped the final two of their three games in Tampa Bay this week, and the Rays took the series with Rene Rivera's ninth-inning single in a 2-1 victory Thursday. Boston was 5-2 on the road before those back-to-back defeats.

Manny Machado will try to send the Red Sox to another loss while adding to his seven hits in 17 at_bats in the last five games. Machado, who hit two homers and drove in four runs Thursday, is batting .130 (6 for 46) in his past 11 contests against the Red Sox but went 1 for 2 versus Porcello on Sunday.

Boston's David Ortiz is batting .363 with six homers in his last 22 games against Baltimore, but he's 1 for 14 in his last five overall contests and 0 for 7 lifetime versus Gonzalez.

Marlins have been dominated by the Nationals

The Washington Nationals may not be off to the hot start most would have predicted, but a series against the Miami Marlins is sure to help as the Nats have gone 8-1 in the two teams past nine contests.

If you remove the anomaly, a 15-7 win for the Marlins in the second game of a doubleheader last year, the Nationals have outscored the Marlins 28-11.

Washington will send Jordan Zimmerman to the mound and the Marlins will counter with Mat Latos Friday.
