Here's how the NFL first round draft picks broke down by conference:

ACC - 9
Pac 12 - 9
SEC - 7
Big Ten - 3
Big 12 - 2
AAC - 2

*The SEC had led the way in first-round picks the past four years.
*The nine selections set a league record for the Pac 12.
*Five of the Pac 12 picks were from the defensive side of the ball.
*The ACC continues a good record for first round picks.
*Power-houses Connecticut and Duke each had one player drafted.

Welcome any comments.......................

Five of the Pac 12 picks were from the defensive side of the ball.

Three from the same team which statistically was horrible, Hau'oli Kikaha who led the nation in sacks for Washington is still on the board. It's hard to fathom how the Huskies were so bad on defense with so many quality players.

Let's see after first 2 rounds or even 3. Aside from the top 10-15 players, from there it's a lot of variables on who goes. There is still some quality talent and there will be some WR's/RB's etc coming that may very well have better careers than the guys already taken. Collins from Bama easily could have been a first rounder. Gregory is a top 10 talent, at least physically. There are 4 runningbacks left in the Big Ten that should be coveted pretty high.

It is hard to figure out why the Pac 12 got so many defensive players chosen in the first round. UDub could not stop anyone on defense, yet they get 3 players picked in round 1 and arguably have their best defensive player from last season still available. Is their coaching that bad?

Like a lot of teams who under perform with NFL talent, it had to be a schematic issue with UW. You've got to be able to get the players to buy into the system or it doesn't work. It's why coaching is so important on the college level. To me, this is a totally different issue than a talented player making it in the NFL. I don't know about the others who were drafted early, but I think Shaq Thompson is a bigtime player and will make it just fine in the NFL.

Transition to a new coaching staff?

I said it before, and most disagreed with me, Steve Sarkisian under-performed at Washington. He's had some talent. I don't think he's the answer for USC.

I have that feeling he's going to be a bust too. Only time will tell. It's one thing taking a team out of the bottom of the barrell dump like UW was in when he took over. They had nowhere to go but up. It's another thing getting a team to perform at championship level. There are only so many coaches out there who are capable of doing it.

Ditto that.
Perhaps the talent Sarkisian left behind wasn't as good as people thought.
He has never been successful wherever he's been. As I said before, Kiffin
was a much better OC than he was under Pete Caroll

Also I'd like to point out that though the Pac and ACC both had 9 1st round picks, the Pac has only 12 teams to the ACC's 14.

Sarkisian seems like a nice guy push over type....can't see him yelling a lot and getting players fired up...I think he will underperform at usc...

Not a great showing for the Big 12. But they are a 10 team conference. It was also one of the youngest conferences in the country last year, so lots of returning starters this season. The only 2 teams who lost a lot of players were Kansas and Kansas St. But those two programs are heavy on JUCO's and don't usually put many players in the NFL anyway. The numbers should rise next season. By the way OU NT Jordan Phillips will be the steal of the NFL draft this year.

Also the Sooners RT Daryl Williams should be a great fit in Carolina's run first offense. I think he's gonna have a long career.

That's pretty good for those two programs. Of course Lockett was a lock to get drafted. I was a little surprised he went in the 3rd round. But there were a lot of quality WR's in this year's draft. Unfortunately Charlie Weis bet the house on those 18 JUCO's he recruited a couple years ago, and now Kansas is left with nothing. Talk about a major fuck up. And KU is still paying this guy too... Unbelievable.

Somebody reach out to Paradise....it's a sad day in Tenneesee. Thay had less picks than several powerhouses like, Texas St, uconn, duke, Texas southern... I think even an academy player got drafted.

I think there might be better days ahead for Tennessee, what I found somewhat surprising is that Florida led all SEC teams with 8 players selected in this draft. In addition, 6 of those players played on the Gators offense, which could generously be described as "pedestrian" by most accounts.

In the Pac 12, Oregon St had as many drafted (5) as Oregon and only 1 less than USC.

Umm. it's no surprise. you may have heard there were a couple of coaching changes in Knoxville these past few years.

What's really amazing is how quickly Butch Jones is turning things around.

51 straight years with a player drafted. Serious question....has Oregon had 51 players drafted in the programs history? Serious question
