So the American Memorial Day isn't good enough for them? They don't want to be remembered with the fallen service men and women of this great country? Move all those idiots to Russia where they belong.

There's only 1 problem with your theory. Which came first the chicken or the egg ?

Confederate memorial day began in 1866 while regular memorial day (then called decoration day) didnt begin until 1888.

In all our countries wars the Southern Soldier was always in the forefront. The Civil War took more American lives than any other war
this country ever had. All amongst us, even South Carolinians have a not just a right but a duty to celebrate & memorialize.

"Before the Civil War, you would never have had an image of the common soldier to memorialize. You would have a general or a biblical figure," said Earle Shettleworth, head historian for the state of Maine. "After the war, there was more of a democratic way of memorializing those who had participated."

What's your point? Just because something came first doesn't make it right. We used to use leeches on people and believe people got sick because of witchcraft. Then we discovered antibiotics and viruses.

It's disrespectful as hell to have a separate holiday as though they aren't part of the United States. Just like flying a confederate flag over the United States flag. If they don't want to be here get the hell out.

Is there anything wrong with celebrating both?

I think so. In separating out just the Southern states soldiers it is dishonoring the United States of America. Emphasis on the UNITED. It shows a total lack of respect for all the lives lost in all wars including the Civil War, not honor them. Confederate soldiers can be celebrated on US Memorial Day just like the lives of soldiers lost in every other war. It's not a celebration of history.

Join the rest of us on Memorial Day and stop bastardizing an import holiday.

The point is that a state does not have to stop having a specific "state" holiday just b/c the government later recognizes a similar national holiday.

The state of Utah has a state holiday on the 3rd friday of july called pioneer day. So what if the federal government all of a sudden decided to have a national holiday called Frontiersman Day in August ? Would Utah have to quit having Pioneer day in july ? Of course not !

They also "observe" it in Tennessee and Texas , but they dont close state offices and schools like South Carolina.

A. There is no Frontiersman Day so your hypothetical made up holiday is hardly a good arguement. What if the United States got taken over by Martians, should we stop celebrating Independence day? Basically the same as your argument.

Nope not at all. Although I do think it's funny how at the end of Monument avenue is a huge statue of Arthur Ashe.

Why get mad about it? Because the "it's history" arguement is horse shit.

The Confederacy is inextricably linked to pre-Civil War era slavery in the South. It is fine to celebrate soldiers who lost their lives in war on the same day as every other war that Americans have fought in throughout history. Singling out a separate Memorial Day just makes you look out of touch with modern society. Just because it's history doesn't mean it gets celebrated on it's own. You don't see Germany celebrating their soldiers who died in WWII on Nazi Memorial Day even though 7 million of them were killed during the war.

I hope you don't mind me keeping you on your toes but when Lincoln was running for POTUS in 1860 he was
OK with slavery in the South, he just put his foot down that slavery would not be allowed in the new territories
gain in the Mexican War that were clamoring for statehood.

More African Americans 'free coloreds & slaves' fought for the South than the North. The finest cavalry officer
horse or mechanized born on American Soil after the war remarked, 'When I entered the army I
took forty-seven Negroes into the army with me, and forty-five of them surrendered with me. I
told these boys that this war was about slavery, and if we lose, you will be made free. If we win the
fight and you stay with me you will be made free. Either way you will be freed. These boys stayed
with me, drove my teams, and better confederates did not live”.

The Confederates tried to get out; that's why they seceded.
