Terrapins among early title contenders

Maryland is one of the favorites to win the 2016 men's basketball national championship, according to a Las Vegas sportsbook, only one year removed from joining the Big Ten from the ACC.

The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has the Terps pegged as a 7-1 co-favorite to win the title, along withKentucky and North Carolina. Kansasis next at 12-1, followed by Iowa State(15-1) and defending champion Duke(18-1).

Maryland reached the NCAA round of 32 before losing to West Virginia in March, finishing with a 28-7 record (14-4 Big Ten). But Maryland returns a national player of the year candidate in sophomore guard Melo Trimble (16.2 PPG, 3.0 APG) and top rebounder Jake Layman (5.8 RPG) and added the No. 2 center in the ESPN 100 rankings in 6-foot-10 Diamond Stone and Duke senior transfer wing Rasheed Sulaimon. The Terps opened at 10-1 and moved to 7-1 with the addition of Sulaimon.
The Terrapins will be the preseason favorite to win the Big Ten and a candidate with North Carolina and Kansas, likely, for the No. 1 preseason ranking. Maryland will play at North Carolina in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, face nearby rivalGeorgetown in the Dave Gavitt Tipoff Games between the Big Ten and Big East and face UConn in the Jimmy V Classic in New York City in the Terps' highest-profile nonconference games.

Maryland last won the national title in 2002 under Hall of Fame coach Gary Williams.
Coach Mark Turgeon, who replaced Williams, took over at Maryland in 2011, and the trip to the NCAA tournament in March was Turgeon's first with the Terps. He led Texas A&M to the NCAA tournament in all four seasons he spent in College Station and took Wichita State to the Sweet 16 in 2006.
California, with its elite recruiting class led by Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb, has seen the biggest improvement in its odds. The Bears were 100-1 when the SuperBook opened its college basketball odds April 20. The Bears are now 50-1.

Florida, with the loss of coach Billy Donovan, saw its odds fall from 40-1 to 100-1. Donovan left to coach the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA. Florida hired former Louisiana Tech coach Mike White as Donovan's replacement.

How the hell is Kentucky favored? They have 3 guys returning and only 2 big time recruits coming in. And the 3 guys returning are not returning because they love the school. They HAVE to return because they aren't NBA quality. 24 out of the top 25 recruits have already committed. Next year, at least UK wise, should be a drop off.

Someone explain why Kentucky is a favorite. That is just crazy. Alex Poythress sucks hence why he is a senior at UK. You know you suck when you are a senior and play for John Calipari. Marcus Lee sucks and that is why he is a junior and playing for Calipari. They have the Skal guy and Briscoe who are supposed to be great. That is it. Who is even their 6th man?

NCAA says:

“to be an integral part of higher education and to focus on the development of our student-athletes.”

Maybe wins and trophies will be vacated. Maybe more postseason bans are in store. Maybe something more severe. There’s no blueprint.

Society failng started with tomorrows future and tomorrows future are todays graduates...

Looks like Lebron said it best; ""I think sports in general, no matter what city it is, something that's going through a city that's very dramatic, traumatizing or anything of that case, I think sports is one of the biggest healers in helping a city out," James a high school grad said. :think2:

Happy MD all...

St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, where he was highly promoted in the national media as a future NBA superstar. After graduating, he was selected with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft by the Cavaliers

Bunch of talk about how America will be in X amount of years or why America is as it is now or how Rx will continue well I ask how majority of Superstars or Sports Hero's have changed anything for anyone but themselves? Future is a fantasy wager on a high school graduate.

Baltimore Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz was ejected in the 12th inning of Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Miami Marlins after umpires discovered a foreign substance on his non-throwing arm.

Matusz was in his first inning of work and had already retired Justin Bour and J.T. Realmuto when new Marlins manager Dan Jennings emerged from the dugout to request that Matusz's right arm be checked for the substance. Home plate umpire Jordan Baker and crew chief Paul Emmel complied and quickly discovered the substance. Matusz was immediately ejected.

Pitchers should be given suspensions in starts not days!

Thats all time for a couple burgers...... rxb@ll

The saga of North Carolina’s academic scandal finally took a step towards completion on Friday, as the school announced that it had finally received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA.

The NCAA released their APR report on Wednesday afternoon, and there will be five college basketball teams that are ineligible for the postseason in 2016.
Alcorn State, Florida A&M, Stetson and Central Arkansas are the four men’s teams that will be sitting out next year’s postseason, while on the women’s side, Savannah State will be ineligible for the postseason.

This is the second straight season that both Florida A&M and Central Arkansas have been banned from the postseason, as there were eight teams in total that missed out on the chance to play in their league tournaments in 2014-15: Alabama State, Appalachian State, Houston Baptist, Lamar, San Jose State, and Milwaukee in addition to FAMU and UCA.

Overall, the men’s basketball APR score was 961, up four points from a year ago.

“More college athletes than ever are succeeding in the classroom, and I applaud their commitment to academic achievement. We are pleased and proud of their accomplishments,” NCAA president Mark Emmert said. “Our goal always has been to encourage students to achieve academically and earn their degrees. Every year, Division I students prove that both academic and athletic success are achievable.”

As I said a Maybe with Carolina, I guess I was wrong! Wonder how much Mark's Bank account grew forgetting about the North Carolina’s academic scandal Shush()*

Any thoughts Hache
