Horrid, horrid move if Van Gundy and/or Thib were actually interested in the job. Gentry is the epitome of a mediocrity.

It's unfortunate the way rookie contracts are setup it is tough to leave a team after your 1st deal is up. They should make that easier so guys don't get trapped on teams like the Cavs or Pelicans the first 1/2 of their career.

Probably can't read or write. Make over 500K a year or something like that. Good for him.

Solid coach. Players like him. Was able to thrive/succeed in some challenging situations.

You know anything about Gentry beyond using basketball reference to look up his career record? Do some research on what happened in LA. He had that team heading the right direction until Donald Sterling stepped in and pissed all over it. How about leading an aging Suns team that looked dead under Terry Porter to the Western Conference Finals. He's had success. He's a good coach and players like him. New Orleans could have done much worse.

He's not a good coach. Be serious with yourself. What are you, his family member?

Anyways, horses win the race. How good is Kerr? Puhlease. Maybe top 150 in basketball coaches in the world, if that? But he's got the horses. So he will win.

Yeah, talent is a huge factor. There's a reason Doc Rivers went from fired in Orlando, and nearly fired in Boston to NBA Champion... Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Gentry's a solid coach. He's not Pop, he's no Thibs, but that doesn't mean he's terrible. But hey, who am I to argue with Korean Basketball League expert.

I'm not buying this shit on Phil Jackson. Guy had a loaded fucking deck every time he coached. And when he didn't have the cards anymore, he simply folded.

Coaching in the NBA is fucking overrated.

I was never a big Phil fan either, but at the NBA level a huge part of coaching in managing egos and earning the respect of your players. No one did that better than Phil.
Keeping Rodman in check and getting him every night to play does deserve some praise.

Coaching in the NBA is underrated as can be. Yes talent is a huge part of it, but coaching and organization is equally important. Great coaches can also attract the talent they need to continue success. But it's ridiculous to say coaching is overrated.

But on the topic I think Gentry is a mediocre hire. They didn't make the team any better in my opinion. It's just his association with the Warriors that got his stock up.

It's that bad?

I was just making more of a general commentary on how it sucks when good players are stuck on bad teams and this is the latest example of that.

I think Thibs would've been better but Gentry isn't bad. Good offensive coach, understands the way the game is going, trends, good rotations guy etc. Obviously he had a lot to do with the shift in how GS has played this year vs with Jackson as coach.

Van Gundy was a good coach but that was a long time ago now. 8-9 years a lot changes in the game and being a coach is just a totally different animal than being an announcer. He never really coached offense well either.

Chop,

If you want one huge reason Gentry is a safer hire than Thibs, he's not the type of guy that wears on players like Thibs can. AD will love Alvin. He's a players' coach. He'll listen to guys. That doesn't mean he'll be the reason Davis stays, but he also won't be the reason Davis leaves.
