My 2015 offseason thread

I am still going to work on my thread on the Oklahoma Sooners but I thought I would begin addressing the upcoming 2015 season before the pre-season mags come out.

I would strongly recommend going online at the sports illustrated site (si.com) and checking out the article they have started addressing 100 reasons to be excited about the upcoming college football season. For instance they address some things that would be interesting to discuss. They point out that Frank Beamer and Steve Spurrier may be entering make it or break it seasons as HC's. They point out that Charlie Strong will be under a lot of pressure since Longhorn fans aren't likely to be very patient. They also point out the expectations for Florida and Tennessee while Missouri quietly prepares to go after their 3rd consecutive division crown. And what effect will Will (not stuttering) Muschamp have on the Auburn defense.

AUBURN, Ala. — It doesn't qualify as radical, cutting-edge insight from Will Muschampwhen he notes that the college football landscape is changing. As time has gone on, teams have become more offensively-oriented. That shift centers around a move to faster, more pass-heavy schemes.
And because of this, defenses have had to adapt. For the man coordinating that unit for Auburn, it means altering the way he draws up his defense.
Au revoir, third linebacker.
"The last three years, four years at Florida we were over 75 percent nickel or dime," Muschamp said earlier this spring, referencing the fact the third linebacker has essentially been replaced by a fifth defensive back three out of every four plays. "You’re talking 20 percent of the game you play."
It's a modification that's been forced upon him by the offenses in the SEC.
"In our league right now, two traditional two-back (offenses), you’re talking in terms of Arkansas and LSU, Alabama will give you a little bit but most everyone’s in a one-back," Muschamp said. "Our crossover opponent, Kentucky, will be in one or two back, but it’ll be open sets. I don’t know where 'Schotty' (first-year Georgia offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer) will take Georgia as far as what they've done, but I don’t think they’re going to get totally away from what they've done. They’ll give you some two-back. That’s where the game is headed."
Still, if asked to describe what he considers his "base" formation, Muschamp would say he fields a hybrid look that alternates between the 3-4 and 4-3 depending on how the offense lines up.
Ever the jokester, though, Muschamp pointed out the numbers didn't add up.
"We’re going to play with 11. You say 3-4, there’s only seven out there," he said. "If I roll seven out there, they’ll fire me quicker than they did at Florida. Nah, we’re dealing with some different packages and that’s certainly an odd look. It’s something we've done in the past that we’re going to try to look at."
Because of this variability between the 3-4 and 4-3, a player's responsibilities are constantly shifting.
Kris Frost knows the feeling.
"Different fits work different ways," the rising senior linebacker said. "In a 3-4, it seems to be a little bit more complicated because it seems like it goes a little bit faster. But the more you rep it and everything, I feel like the more we’ll be successful with fitting everything correctly. ... With the attitudes all the guys have had, we’ll definitely be up to par with everything."
On the back end, safety Johnathan Ford — known as "Rudy" to coaches and teammates — said cornerbacks are tasked to do more under Muschamp than they were in the 4-2-5 scheme used by former coordinator Ellis Johnson.
"It's really going to expose how you're going to play different stuff like that right now," said Ford, who in addition to his duties at safety, also saw reps at corner. "We're going to see how we line up in different matchups, how to play where the safeties are at. Maybe you'll be on an island all by yourself. You've really got to know your technique, get it all down pat."
And the Tigers' defensive linemen have plenty to learn as well, with Rodney Garner describing it in precise football terms.
"Just getting them to understand that, hey, yesterday we were back to the one-gap. We're four down (linemen)," he said. "Now going forward ... we want to be able to comingle, so they've got to understand, are we two-gapping it or are we single-gapping it? But I think as they get more comfortable with the system and understanding how to apply the technique and the fundamentals to what the calls are, I think they're going to get better."
But what is the biggest advantage the 3-4 holds over the 4-3 from a lineman's perspective?
"You can disguise your pressure. That's the one thing when I was at Georgia working with (then-defensive coordinator Todd) Grantham, we could disguise so many different ways to bring pressure and to do different things," Garner said. "And it changes an offense's blocking schemes, especially if you can comingle; you're giving them a three-down look, a four-down look and they've got to block that thing differently, whether it be in their run game or their pass (protection). How are they going to set their pass (protection)? So it definitely gives you a lot of flexibility."
That's the whole point, Muschamp said: the defense has to be versatile.
With offenses continuing to push the pace (and the bounds of creativity), defenses have to do everything they can to keep up.
"You’re seeing what your guys are going to be able to handle," Muschamp said. "We’re purposely making adjustments in practice to how we’re playing a coverage for the simple reason that that’s what’s going to happen in the game and you got to be able to make an in-game adjustment. So who could handle that in the middle of a practice and change how we’re doing something? "

Interesting story by ESPN.com's Chris Low this week about why Bob Stoops has stayed at Oklahoma for so long. Stoops acknowledged he has been courted by the NFL and talked about the Florida job. "It's been attractive a couple of times, and if things through the years hadn't been as positive as they've been here, that is one of the places I always felt like was a great fit for me," Stoops said. I think the one time he was really tempted was when Urban Meyer left. When Will Muschamp was fired, I've been told Stoops wasn't interested. One thing that can never be overestimated is the relationship between a coach in any sport and his athletic director and president. When I visited Stoops in Norman two years ago, he was raving about both of them.

CB: The Stoop's family is totally invested in the city of Norman etc. Perhaps when the kids are all out of school he might make a change but his wife especially likes it here and they recently built a very expensive home to boot. Moving his brother to the booth and hiring 4 new asst coaches probably says it all. He is now going to come out firing and I think they have plenty of ammunition this time around.

I think we will do just fine. There is nothing like experience and we have plenty on this part of the forum. I have a good feeling about the up coming season and that is not always the case. We shall see. BOL

I went on to philsteele.com today and it seems he is making some changes in his magazine this time out.

"The bottom line is that you will see more player notes this year in the individual units and it will be much easier to find the useful information in the forecasts. I really like the changes made for the 2015 magazine and my most important goal EACH year is to be the most accurate magazine in the country, so I am pleased to report that the Phil Steele College Football Preview has been the Most Accurate Preseason magazine last year, the last 3 years, last 5 years, last 10 years and last 17 years and should remain that way"

GS, I agree he is all in at OU.....now. I think there was a time he toyed w/ the idea of leaving, but those days are behind him (he's pushing 60 now). I think he stays there about 5 more years and hangs it up. This new set of coaches will be his last stand (to see if he has another national title run in him).

I'm surprised Billy Donovan left UF....but he did a similar thing; he waited until he had an empty nest. He's just barely 50 years old, so he can go to the NBA and make some money, see how he does, and still retire early enough to enjoy life.

Only thing left to decide, as far as I can tell, is the early or afternoon ABC/ESPN2 games. Seems to me the only decent possibilites are Stanford @ Northwestern and BYU @ Nebraska.

Can Everett Golson become the man for one year at Florida State?

For Everett Golson, 2014 was a season of highs and lows. His return from an academic suspension started off swimmingly, and Notre Dame hit midseason with a 6-0 record. But the Fighting Irish finished the regular season 1-5, and Golson lost his starting role to Malik Zaire.
Golson had 29 touchdowns and 3,445 passing yards, but he also had 14 interceptions and eight fumbles. He noted that his turnovers were "just me not taking care of the ball," per FoxSports.com's Bruce Feldman:

It was me trying to do too much at times. Not giving up on plays. Me trying to escape the pocket and not keeping two hands on the ball. Just being real careless. Lots of little detail stuff. And that costs us a little bit. At the end of the day what didn't happen was me getting back to the fundamentals.

Sean Maguire finished spring practice in the lead for the job, but Golson is expected to challenge him for the job. Some Florida State fans might consider him the savior, but Golson isn’t stepping into an easy situation.
FSU returns only one starting offensive lineman, and while talented tailback Dalvin Cook returns, the Seminoles must also replace key passing-game targets in Rashad Greene and Nick O’ Leary. Expecting Golson to pick up Jimbo Fisher’s offense over the summer and excel with a short learning curve might be a bridge too far.

Ok ready to go. Just completed my spreadsheet with 2014 updates and totals and have all of my other totals (such as returning starters etc) on there also. I will begin posting stats etc next week that should prove very valuable at the start of the season. It takes a while to get all the stats on there and I have a few new ones also. I look forward to analyzing everything and would appreciate any input also.

When you assemble stats things stand out as you post them on your spreadsheet. It is well worth the effort.

What David Cutcliffe has done at DUKE the past two years is amazing. One of the best coaching jobs in the country. Duke had won 4 games the previous four seasons before Cutcliffe took over. Now, 19 wins the past two seasons.

How Tennessee missed out on this guy is a mystery?
