Game of the Day: Tampa Bay Lightning at Chicago Blackhawks

Tampa Bay Lightning at Chicago Blackhawks (-166, 5)

Blackhawks lead series 3-2

The Chicago Blackhawks look to capture their third Stanley Cup championship in six years and first on their home ice since 1938 when they play the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 on Monday. The Blackhawks put themselves in this advantageous position thanks to trade-deadline acquisition Antoine Vermette, who scored the eventual game-winning goal in the series opener before his go-ahead tally exactly two minutes into the third period stood up in a 2-1 victory in Game 5 on Saturday.

As captain, Jonathan Toews was the first member of the team to celebrate with the Stanley Cup in both Philadelphia (2010) and Boston (2013) - and would like the opportunity to hoist the trophy at the Madhouse on Madison. "Whether we're one win away or 15 wins away, you come in with that belief and you know what your team is capable of," Toews said. "... It's a great group, and we understand how unique this group is and how unique this chance is." Tampa Bay still has a say in this series and could force a deciding Game 7 at Amalie Arena on Wednesday, although the availability of Triplets line member Nikita Kucherov is in question for Monday's tilt. Coach Jon Cooper said on Sunday that the 21-year-old Russian is "in considerable better shape today" after sustaining a shoulder injury by crashing into the post early in the first period of Game 5.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, TVA Sports

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Blackhawks -169 with that moving to -166. The total opened at 5.

INJURY REPORT: Lightning - RW Nikita Kucherov (Questionable, upper body). Blackhawks - N/A.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Captain Steven Stamkos, veteran Ryan Callahan and youngsters J.T. Brown and Jonathan Drouin each saw time playing along Triplets linemates Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat in the absence of Kucherov, who ranks second on Tampa Bay in goals (10), assists (12) and points (22). "He's a point-per-game guy in these playoffs. He's a big part of our offense," Cooper said of Kucherov. "... You don’t want to lose guys like that." Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, Stamkos is mired in a seven-game goalless drought after recording a team-best 43 tallies in the regular season.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Chicago is attempting to win its sixth Stanley Cup in franchise history while becoming the first club to claim three in a six-year period since Detroit accomplished the feat from 1997-2002. Patrick Kane was named the 2013 Conn Smythe Trophy winner after the Blackhawks dispatched the Bruins in six games, but the superstar has been quiet in this series (one assist) after recording 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) in the first three rounds. Toews has rebounded following a slow start in the Stanley Cup final, scoring a goal in Game 4 and setting up Patrick Sharp's tally in Game 5.

TRENDS:

* Under is 6-0 in the last six meetings in Chicago.
* Under is 4-0 in Lightning's last four road games.
* Lightning are 4-9 in the last 13 meetings in Chicago.

One-goal games have dominated Cup final
By STEPHEN CAMPBELL

It's fairly evident by now just how evenly matched the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chicago Blackhawks are, as close games have been a recurring theme in the Stanley Cup Final.

In fact, every game of the series so far has been a one-goal game. According to a tweet from ESPN Stats and Info, that marks the first time that each of the first five Stanley Cup Final contests have been decided by one goal since the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens squared off in the 1951 final.

Online shop CarbonSports.ag has opened the Tampa Bay Lightning -240 (+1.5) on the puckline for Game 6.

Under cashes in third straight with 5.5 total
By ANDREW AVERY

Betting the Under has been a hot choice for hockey bettors as it has posted a record of 3-0 over the last three Stanley Cup final games between the Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The trend coincides with the totals closing at 5.5 following the Lightning's 4-3 victory in Game 2.

Game 5 ended with a 2-1 Blackhawk's victory and the second straight 2-1 final.

CarbonSports.ag has opened the total for Game 6 at 5.

MLB roundup: Scherzer tosses one-hitter, strikes out 16
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

MILWAUKEE -- Max Scherzer was perfect through six innings and Clint Robinson had a two-run double as the Washington Nationals earned a split in their four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 4-0 victory Sunday.

Scherzer plowed through the Brewers' lineup twice, striking out 11, before Carlos Gomez led off the seventh inning with a bloop single into short right field. The right-hander left him stranded, though, and went the distance with a one-hitter, striking out a career-high and franchise single-game record 16 batters while earning just the second shutout of his career.

Scherzer is 7-5 with a 1.93 ERA in his first season in Washington after signing a seven-year, $210 million contract in the offseason.

The Nationals scored two runs against right-hander Taylor Jungmann (1-1), who struggled in just his second major league start, giving up seven hits and two walks with two wild pitches and a hit batter while striking out five in five innings.

Rays 2, White Sox 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep of Chicago, outdueling perhaps the hottest pitcher in baseball against left-hander Chris Sale.

The Rays had been held to one hit in six innings by Sale before he gave up a two-run home run to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera in the bottom of the seventh. Sale (6-3) struck out 12 batters -- his fourth straight with at least that many -- but took the loss after allowing more runs (two) than he had in his previous three starts combined (one).

Rays starter Nathan Karns kept his team in the game with six strong innings, holding the White Sox to one run on seven hits, thanks to 1-for-9 hitting with runners in scoring position.

Blue Jays 13, Red Sox 5

BOSTON -- Sizzling Toronto earned its 11th straight win to match the longest winning streak in franchise history after routing Boston.

Ryan Goins led the way with a career-high five RBIs as the Blue Jays completed a sweep of the three-game series and sent the floundering Red Sox to their sixth straight loss.

RedSox second baseman Dustin Pedroia clearly lost two pop flies and may have lost a third, right fielder Alejandro De Aza misjudged a pop fly and then also fumbled around on the ground for the ball which let another run score. In addition, Hanley Ramirez continued his not-so-excellent adventure in left field by playing a double poorly off the wall to allow a run to score. A loud chorus of boos followed the Ramirez misplay.

Mets 10, Braves 8

NEW YORK -- Juan Lagares hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to cap a stunning comeback by New York.

The Mets trailed 4-1 in the second inning and 8-3 in the fourth before producing their biggest come-from-behind victory of the season.

The Mets trailed 8-7 when their sixth-inning rally began with singles by pinch-hitter Michael Cuddyer and Curtis Granderson against left-hander Luis Avilan (2-2). Lagares homered three pitches later.

Rockies 4, Marlins 1

MIAMI -- Jorge De La Rosa became the franchise leader in career wins, leading Colorado over Miami to break its four-game losing streak.

The Marlins had their three-game win streak snapped. Miami was looking for its first four-game home sweep since 2011.

De La Rosa (4-2) pitched seven innings and allowed four hits, four walks and one run. He earned career win No. 73, which broke a tie with Aaron Cook atop the Rockies' career list.

Pirates 1, Phillies 0 (11 innings)

PITTSBURGH -- Josh Harrison singled up the middle for the game's only run in the 11th inning to left Pittsburgh over Philadelphia.

Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis threw a routine groundball into the stands that set up Harrison's winning hit. The Phillies were swept for the second series in a row and the fifth time this season.

Pittsburgh right-hander A.J. Burnett pitched nine shutout innings. He gave up five hits and walked one, with four strikeouts. Left-hander Antonio Bastardo (2-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless 11th.

Yankees 5, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE – John Ryan Murphy had three hits, including a tiebreaking two-run double with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and New York salvaged the finale of its three-game series.

Stephen Drew added two hits for the first-place Yankees, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Nolan Reimold drove in two runs for the Orioles, who were looking to win seven straight for the first time since an eight-game streak in 2005.

Tigers 8, Indians 1

DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera blasted another home run and J.D. Martinez hit a three-run home run and Detroit claimed a rain-prolonged victory over Cleveland.

Right-hander Alfredo Simon allowed three hits in five scoreless innings before heavy rains prompted a one-hour, 51 minute delay.

Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber allowed two runs and four hits in five innings before the delay.

Astros 13, Mariners 0

HOUSTON -- Rookie right-hander Lance McCullers worked five hitless innings and the Houston scored multiple runs in three different innings against Seattle.

The Astros posted their second lopsided shutout of the series as designated hitter Evan Gattis had four singles. Third baseman Luis Valbuena hit a two-run homer and second baseman Marwin Gonzalez added a solo shot as Houston improved to 23-0 when hitting multiple home runs.

Seattle right-hander Roenis Elias allowed eight runs (seven earned) and seven hits in a season-low 3 1/3 innings.

Twins 4, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Eddie Rosario's double to right-center field with two outs in the ninth inning snapped a tie and lifted Minnesota past Texas.

Rosario's extra-base hit off Texas closer Shawn Tolleson was the ninth of the game for Minnesota and 16th over a two-game stretch. Rookie center fielder Byron Buxton made his major league debut for Minnesota and 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Third baseman Joey Gallo and center fielder Leonys Martin hit solo home runs for Texas.

Diamondbacks 4, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO - Right-hander Rubby De LaRosa allowed six hits over eight-plus innings and Arizona completed its first sweep in San Francisco since July 2007.

Chris Owings had a two-run double for Arizona, which handed San Francisco its eighth straight home loss.

Chris Heston followed up Tuesday's no-hitter against the New York Mets by allowing three runs (two earned) and seven hits in five innings.

Athletics 8, Angels 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Right-hander Sonny Gray allowed a unearned run and five hits 7 2/3 innings and Oakland routed Los Angeles.

Ben Zobrist collected three hits Eric Sogard tied a career high with three RBI as Oakland capitalized on three errors by the Angels.

Johnny Giavotella, Chris Iannetta and Erick Aybar committed fielding errors for Los Angeles.

Royals-Cardinals, ppd. rain

ST. LOUIS -- The game between Kansas City and St. Louis was rained out after a 2 1/2-hour rain delay.

No makeup date was set, although the teams have July 23 and August 3 as mutual off-days.

Mohawk: Monday 6/15 Analysis
By Garnet Barnsdale

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

EARLY $1 PICK 4:

9,10/5,7/4,7,9/1,3,6,7 = $48

LATE $1 PICK 4: 1,3,6,7/1,5/3,7,8/2,7 = $48

MEET STATS: 114 - 356 / $639.80 BEST BETS: 15 - 32 / $52.70

SPOT PLAYS: 5 - 30 / $45.60

Best Bet: DOUBLEDOWN GASS (9th)

Spot Play: THOUGHTFUL LEADER (2nd)

Race 1

(4) LA BELLA ROSA is one of the only entrants in here with any kind of form. She'll never find an easier spot to break her maiden. (5) NOBLE LEGEND has been tabbed several times here as a wake-up prospect. Perhaps tonight it finally happens in this week group. (1) TOP NOTCH LADY AS improved a bit in her second start and could share here if Zeron keeps her closer early.

Race 2

(5) THOUGHTFUL LEADER faced better in the Grassroots last time and showed good late speed to nab third. This is a good spot for him to break his maiden and price might be decent because (7) BIG RICH will likely be a big chalk again. The latter is obviously capable, but also unreliable and had little excuse for getting nailed late last time. (2) ONTHEROAD DE VIE came closest to finally breaking through for his initial score last time and improved his overall speed; maybe.

Race 3

(1) PRESCOTTS HOPE left hard, took a tuck then reached up late in his first start for Brealey off the claim. This one is likely capable of improvement here which will be required to take this. Top call at a square price. (3) BEACH HERO showed some grit down the lane at Georgian last Tuesday, fighting off several that were coming late and nabbing 4th. That was with his trainer driving and he switches to a top catch-driver here; contender. (4) SANATTLE SLEW is sure to be wildly over bet off his 3rd in a rapid mile last week. He is as win-shy as they come and needs a perfect trip to get it done. We'll play against as an underlay.

Race 4

(10) SPEED RACER was third vs. much better in an open claimer last week and can take these if Massey sends him hard early. Post 10 could help the price. (9) PAIN IN THE GLASS closed well despite being on excess cover in his first try over Mohawk. Henry returns to drive for his nephew; contender in a field with few. (5) SACHERTORTE makes his second start off the claim for Moreau after showing little from an outer post at Grand River. He can improve here.

Race 5

(7) MURMUR HANOVER returns from a break and trotted faster in his qualifier than he had been in his pari-mutuel starts. Perhaps Baillargeon has fixed him up; top call in a wide-open dash. (5) EXEMPLAR drops and gets Lasix. He is capable of much better; perhaps the medication will help. (1) DAMFOOLRMILLIONAIR faces easier in his second start of the year and is sure to wake up soon; maybe tonight.

Race 6

(7) TWOMICKEYTRIP goes for Moreau first off the claim here and gets some post relief. He is sure to be prominent throughout. (9) IDEAL SHADOW managed to stay close enough to capitalize using his potent late kick last week. He can repeat if he can get close enough by the 3/4 pole from this outer post. (4) CRAFTY MASTER beat the one above two weeks ago, was claimed then skipped a week. He should be tough here; keep on pick 4 tickets.

Race 7

(6) MYSTICAL JET showed great improvement in his second start of the year flying up late from way back. He can take these if kept a bit closer early. (3) ALONEINSPADES set an honest pace and was nailed only late in an improved effort. He should be prominent throughout. (7) ONWAYTOSANTAFE has faced better in his past three starts and should be a contender here, possibly at a good price.

Race 8

(1) INTENDED STYLE, has been on a roll in this class and will be very tough to beat from the rail here. (5) FOREGO THE CIGAR was an impressive winner at Georgian first time out for the Nixon barn and looks like the main threat. (3) GENESEE has had several rough trips and is capable of better if he can land in a good spot early near the front.

Race 9

(8) DOUBLEDOWN GASS beat similar two back with a big first-over effort. Expect Gassien to blast this one off the gate and attempt to go down the road. (7) WEST SIDE STORY finally got his gait issues figured out last time and got up late. He is capable of beating these and is sure to be a better price here. (3) BURNIN MONEY has been sharp for several weeks and will be coming late, as usual.

Race 10

(7) BIG MAGICK drops to face one of his weakest fields yet and should be up on or near the pace throughout. (2) WILDCAT LIGHTNING keeps coming close and gets Lasix here. He is one of seemingly few contenders. (4) R U MACHIN ME chased a good one last time out and can share here vs. this mostly easier group. (3) JIMMY BE GOOD exits the same dash as the one above and will fight for one of the minor awards. (6) REAL RAYE comes in off two easy wins at Kawartha and could better this placing.

'On The Ice'

Blackhawks defeating Lightning 2-1 in Tampa Saturday night can capture hockey's 'Holy Grail' Monday at the Madhouse on Madison. In a series that has yet to see any team win by more than one goal, not too hard to imagine another classic playoff one goal affair. In the end, it's Blackhawks' time. Experienced and battled hardened Blackhawks have been here before. In the Kane/Toews era, Hawks are 2-0 when up 3-2 going into a game-six. Blackhawks 11-3 in one goal games during this second season prevail capturing 'Stanley's Jug' for the third time in six years and for the first time on home ice in 77 years. Blackhawks 32-14-5 at home behind the raucous crowd at the United Center, including 8-2 these playoffs are -$1.65 to -$1.80 favorites depending on locale.

All three Chicago wins in this series ended up 2-1 games; Lightning won two games when they scored in third period. Chicago is trying to wIn Stanley Cup at home for first time since 1938; they've won Cup two of last five years, but obviously, both came on road- This is series where visitor has won three of five games. Lightning outhit Chicago 191-125 in first five games, but Chicago has 148-93 edge on faceoffs the last four games. Chicago won five of last seven games overall, with four of five in this round staying under. Seven of last nine series games stayed under. Lightning is 1-12 on power play in series, Chicago is 2-13; there were only three penalties called in Game 5.

Blackhawks are extremely clutch once again
Stephen Campbell

The Chicago Blackhawks came through once again for their bettors in a big game situation during Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final Saturday night.

Chicago topped the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Florida to take a 3-2 series lead, which is something we've become accustomed to seeing. With Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane in the fold, the Hawks are now 17-1 in games when the series is tied 2-2.

The Blackhawks are 8-0 in those series, and they'll have an opportunity to make it nine straight and hoist the Stanley Cup in front of their hometown fans Monday evening. Oddsmakers have set the Hawks as -166 moneyline faves for Game 6.

Hawks haven't been able to win Cup at home
Stephen Campbell

On Monday, Chicago Blackhawks fans will be hoping to witness something they haven't seen in 77 years: watching their team win a Stanley Cup on home ice.

The Hawks, up 3-2 in the Stanley Cup Final after dispatching Tampa Bay 2-1 Saturday, are in the -166 ballpark at sportsbooks.

Jonathan Toews and company are no strangers to Lord Stanley's holy grail, however, after raising it in Philadelphia in 2010 and Boston in 2013.

What's Kucherov's status for Game 6?
Stephen Campbell

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper told reporters Sunday that forward Nikita Kucherov is in "considerably better shape" compared to Saturday, but his availability is up in the air for Game 6 of the Cup final on Monday.

Kucherov collided with the goal post after getting tangled up with Chicago Blackhawks netminder Corey Crawford in the first period of Game 5 and did not return to the ice. The Russian is presently listed as questionable but his status will be determined on Monday, Cooper stated.

The 21-year-old is enjoying a breakout performance in the postseason, sitting just one point behind linemate Tyler Johnson for the playoff scoring lead at 22 points.

The Bolts are currently +150 on the moneyline and will need a win in order to force a Game 7 and keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive.

# 4 Y-DAT 6/1

# 7 SHARP EDGE 12/1

# 3 MR RIDGETAKER 5/2

The consensus in here is that Y-DAT is the one to beat. Might be there at a favorable price tag. Most definitely one to keep in your exotics. Top notch win clip combined with recent really strong performances. We think he can handle this group. When the starter calls, solid standardbreds beginning out of the 4 position have more wins than is normal. SHARP EDGE - A formidable play in here as he has one of the highest winning figures in the field of starters as well as excellent credentials all around. His 88 avg has this horse among the best TrackMaster speed figs in this race. MR RIDGETAKER - Can't ignore based on TrackMaster SRs which have been outstanding (85 avg) in recent times. Could beat this bunch, just look at the TrackMaster Speed Rating - 88 - from his most recent effort.

# 2 IM A NICE GIRL 3/1

# 5 RED EYE BLUE CHIP 9/2

# 1 JB ROSE 7/2

If you want a really strong play this time, feast your eyes on IM A NICE GIRL. Worth a look here given the ratings in the speed rating department alone. Has a very strong shot in this one, if she can repeat her back racing class. Had one of the most compelling TrackMaster Speed Ratings of the grouping in her last competition. A good idea to use in your wagers. RED EYE BLUE CHIP - Great driver-handler, winning 22 percent of the time. Appears to be a tremendous wager. Strong returns over time for this driver/trainer duet. This nice horse is an obvious pick. JB ROSE - Handicappers love to play the driver of this mare - superb win rate within the recent past. This trainer, and the driver Aldrich, go together like gin and tonic. Their results together are amazing.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 7 E Z EDDIE 5/2

# 4 MY LITTLE DISCO 2/1

# 6 LINESMAN 15/1

E Z EDDIE is my choice. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Acquilano running at this distance are the top in this group of horses in this race. Will more than likely be one of the early speedsters of the pack going into the midpoint of the race. Should expect a solid attempt with the class drop. MY LITTLE DISCO - Will almost certainly compete admirably in the early speed contest which bodes well with this field. He should have a strong performance versus this easier group. LINESMAN - Trainers don't bring mounts back this quickly just for fun.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 4 CANALASSO 12/1

# 7 ALPHABET TIME 10/1

# 9 JOYCE THE NURSE 4/1

CANALASSO is the most favorable bet in this contest and is a very good value bet given the line at 12/1. Overall the Speed Figures of this pony look formidable in this outing. Ought to be given consideration in this race if only for the solid speed figure garnered in the last competition. Formidable average Equibase speed figs in dirt route races make this pony a solid contender. ALPHABET TIME - Has the look of a money-making play. Boasts reliable Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group of horses in this race. JOYCE THE NURSE - Ought to be used in the exotic offerings. Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me back this filly.

#7 FIRST VERSE (ML=6/1)
#6 CADCAM (ML=8/1)

FIRST VERSE - Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Unquestionably on edge for a good one today. I have to like this gelding's winning probability at the shorter trip. Ranks uppermost in earnings per start (EPS). A solid try right here can increase the lifetime total. The Jun 1st clash at Mountaineer was at a class level of (85). Dropping down the class scale significantly, so he should be in a good spot. CADCAM - Hernandez was aboard this gelding last race out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. Ran a less than stellar race at Mountaineer last race out. Racing on a fast track puts this gelding at the top of my contenders list.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BONAMASSA (ML=8/5), #5 SORDISA (ML=7/2), #1 SEVEN DAY FOOL (ML=4/1),

BONAMASSA - I cannot play this confirmed non-winner. Gets the task completed infrequently. SORDISA - Finished third in his most recent effort with a disappointing speed fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this field. SEVEN DAY FOOL - Couldn't close ground at any point on Jun 3rd. Hard to play in today's event at the expected odds.

#3 FLASHY PEARL (ML=2/1)

FLASHY PEARL - The September 27th race at Retama Park was at a class level of (89). Dropping down in class a significant amount, so she should be in a good place. This mare seems to run pretty good after a layoff. You have to be keen on that latest race speed rating, 64, which is the best recent race figure of this field. Is ranked number one in (EPS) earnings per start. A solid effort today can augment the lifetime earnings.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 I'M MAKIN NOTES (ML=5/2), #6 LEGGY LAURA (ML=7/2), #2 THE EVIL EDGE (ML=6/1),

I'M MAKIN NOTES - Recorded a disappointing rating in the last race in a $4,000 Claiming race on May 29th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that figure. LEGGY LAURA - Can't bet on this pony in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint affair recently. Not likely that the speed rating she garnered on May 17th will hold up in this race. THE EVIL EDGE - This horse doesn't have a winner's demeanor. Repeatedly finishes second or third.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - FLASHY PEARL - I scan the TrackMaster Platinum PPs for this type of horse. Has the top TrackMaster Power Rating by at least 5 points.
