"It's not going to be easy to pull the trigger on the Red Sox here but the line says it's the right play. You see, Boston has dropped six in a row and were absolutely destroyed over the weekend by the Blue Jays. The Jays scored 13 runs in two of the three games and pretty much humiliated the Red Sox at Fenway. Furthermore, today's starter, Rick Porcello has an ERA of 5.26 after 12 starts. Porcello's ERA over his last three starts is 5.75 and at Fenway his ERA is 4.81. By contrast, Williams Perez is 2-0 after five starts with an ERA of 2.70. Perez is coming off a four-hit, seven inning shutout against the Padres, which brings us to the odds or the betting line."

"Boston is -175 today. How can that be? Porcello is a bigger price over Atlanta and Perez than Pittsburgh is against Chicago with Liriano against Rodon. The Red Sox are a bigger price than Tanaka against Koehler and John Lackey at home against Trevor May and the reeling Twins. We can't imagine a single person that is going to be attracted to the Bosox spotting -175 today against Atlanta. It's ludicrous actually and that's why we have to play the Red Sox. This line is a clear example of the oddsmakers enticing a bet on the wrong side. If Atlanta wins, the books are in danger of getting whacked in parlays and straight bets. This is a serious price to be giving away to what appears to be a very live pooch. The oddsmakers are taking a big gamble and a strong position on this game. When that happens, we want to be on the same side as them. Forget the stats. The right play here is Boston -1½ and taking back a price. The line says this one won't be close."

This is what happens when people try to "read" lines.

Atlanta was a ridiculous price. Great pitcher form angle working for them.
