Why do baseball managers not coach to win in obvious situations?!?!? Rangers have runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out and have the number 9 hitter up who is 0-4. Promptly grounds in to inning ending double play. I feel like this type of shit happens all the time. Pinch hit for the m'fer?!? Same thing with cole hamels and phillies a few weeks ago. Granted with the phils, they suck anyway but the rangers are battling for a playoff spot. Why?!?

And obviously this comment is tongue in cheek as these guys will forget more than I'll ever know BUT even as a guy with a financial vested interest in games, it's amazing how many times these guys aren't a little more aggressive to try to win games when they can. I understand there isn't a miguel cabrera or mike trout sitting on everyone's bench ready to pinch hit and win a game, but in late inning situations in close games, it's crazy how many times these retread managers let a pitcher or a number nine hitter who is 0-4 with 3 strikeouts hit with guys in scoring positions. Drives me insane!!!!
I agree with what your saying jwhite that a lot of these managers make some very questionable decisions. I was watching the Phillies games and I would have pulled Hammels your right. We have to remember though that sometimes like last night these coaches know their teams wayyyyyy better than you or I do and maybe his thought process is I started this guy for a reason, yes he's 0-4 but that also means that he's seen 4 ab's now and is a little more comfortable and seen pitches today already. Plus law of averages or regress to the mean could point to the guy is due for a hit if he's atleast .200 hitter. Maybe the coach thinks that for these reasons his chances with the he chose are better than taking someone off the bench that has been sitting and is cold. Maybe he was lying attention and his bench players weren't going into the cages staying warm so he fealt they didn't deserve the chance. Hard to tell just trying to point out somet thing since to help you keep an open mind. But I agree, I wish we saw more small ball. Very few coaches actually bunt people over every time they should. I played collegietly and started every game for a team that got 3rd in the junior college World Series and my coach would bunt the #3 hitter if the situation were there. If he didn't bunt it or you didn't get it down you didn't start the next game. Smartest coach I've ever played for and we out scored teams playing small ball every single day. Too few of coaches do this anymore because of the MLB and egos and power hitters now. Different game I guess but when you see teams do it they are always one of the more successful teams that year it seems. All just my 2 cents and opinion.

And I like you and like every other person that bets on sports, still try to find a reason to be mad at the managers when I'm losing haha. It's their fault! They are the stupid ones making bad decisions cause you know damn well we don't make bad investments!
We don't have the information that a manager does to make the decisions they make. These guys live and breathe baseball, have bench coaches that they also rely upon.
Maybe the manager wanted to give the guy a chance to get a big hit to get some confidence, knowing he will need him later in the season. Maybe his bench guys do poorly against that pitcher, it could be any number of reasons.
We aren't privileged to the inner workings of a ball club, and there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to making these decisions.
