I'm just brainstorming here but I think the best and worst playoff field for TV ratings would be as follows. The only guideline is that the teams have to be in the realm of a reasonable possibility. We aren't getting Idaho/WF/Vandy/Army so no use wasting our time.

Best ratings possible: obviously we want a team in every major region representing the largest conferences. We were close last year with Ohio St and Bama, but I feel the strongest field would be Ohio St/USC/Texas/Alabama.

Worst ratings possible: the South and the Midwest are the two regions that are the most college football centric. Baylor and TCU both have smaller fan bases and a large portion of the country and college football purists do not see them as realistic threats. SEC is always going to be represented so take the one team that is SEC but still doesn't quite feel like an SEC team. Two time East champion Missouri. Bringing up the fourth spot would be GT. Even though they are an ACC team in the heart of the south, they don't have a huge following or much national cache. There is our field, TCU/Baylor/Missouri/GT. The west coast and Big Ten are completely cut off and the SEC just doesn't care and is already looking towards next year. Needless to say market rate for NCG tickets would be less than face value.

I think that the bet case scenario is one where you have one team from 4 conferences represented. That seems to spread the wealth out a lot more. It will be very interesting to see what happens as far as TV ratings go this season for the semi's because they will be played on New Year's Eve. With one game scheduled to start at 4 pm Eastern and the other scheduled to start at 8 pm Eastern, these games will interfere with a lot of New Years Eve celebrations. If the late game is between TCU or Baylor and say Oregon or Michigan State, not many people are going to bother watching it.

Three of the next four years the semifinals fall on NYE. I take a very close interest in the playoff dates and the bidding processes since I go every year. I personally don't care in when the games are, football first, parties take a back seat for me. My only issue with the playoff is that it uses bowl games for semis. It should be on campus. But that is a rant for a different time.
