Small schools are always fun to bet.... Here's a team I rather enjoyed watching play last year

Anyone who has read any of my posts or thread knows I'm a duck fan and I love watching uptempo and spread offense play. But one thing I've always appreciated is great lockdown defense. In today's age it's becoming more and more difficult to keep teams off the scoreboard. Last year for some reason or another I took a liking and placed a few wagers on the temple owls. Obviously they play in the AAC, which is not a power five conference and is typically dominated by teams like Cincy or ECU, but these hooters can play some defense. Interestingly enough I was browsing thru Phil steeles 2015 returning starters article and noticed that temple is the only school in the nation to return all 11 players on one side of the ball, in fact temple returns 19 total starters which was good enough to be tied for second in the nation. Think about how good they were defensively last year and now return 11 guys(according to Steele).... That's remarkable. Their offense was atrocious at times but they flat out went toe to toe with penn state and a couple other teams. This season they open at a neutral Philadelphia site against the nittany Lions, and also play notre dame, ECU and Cincy.... That's a formidable schedule for an under the radar team with 19 returning starters . Temple won me some money keeping games under the total with their prideful defense and also won a few wagers for me by staying within the number as dogs.

One more ore thing to think about, although their offense was horrible at times, they do return their dual threat qb and all 5 offensive lineman. I'll be watching their lines closer than ever this year, especially against penn state, ECU, Cincy and notre dame where they will almost surely be double digit dogs in what I would presume would be all four of those games.

Feel free to throw your two cents in this thread, or 10$ lol... I just thought I'd share that information with you all in the case that some of you may like to bet the smaller schools as much as I do

They just resigned their coach to a new 4-year deal.

Temple: Head coach Matt Rhule has agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2021. The Owls went 6-6 in Rhule’s second season last year and finished No. 4 in scoring defense. Rhule is 40 years old.

I like them even more now. You can tell he's a young and gritty dude who has a ton of energy

I didn't realize he was so young. He's done a good job. Although, Temple has surprisingly had a winning record more times than not over the last 10 years or so w/ Golden, Addazio and now Rhule.

Good let 2quack. Temple by far has the best defense in the AAC. What was impressive to me last year is they only gave up 17.5 points per game (4th nationally). That will keep a team in a lot of ball games. The offense, especially the running game has a long way to go through. One would think the Owls will win 6 games again this season....maybe up to 8 if the offense will help. They were 6-6 ATS during 2014.

I hear you loud and clear. My instinct tells me to watch this team a little closer than normal tho considering the amount of depth they have and the man at the helm who's obviously a man who wears his emotions on his sleeve. For a big time program that's probably not the guy you want leading a team, but for a smaller program looking to shock the conference and catch a decent bowl bid, he's the best fit for this program. That team should respond well to him, especially this year with all the starters coming back. I expect A LOT of very tight games and I could easily see them at 8-4, maybe even 9-3 with their only losses coming to ECU, notre dame and Cincy. I truly think they've got a better than fighting chance against penn state and could easily knock off ECU who seems to be rather erratic.

For what it's worth It's just my evaluation of the team. More than likely they will end up around 7-5 but if that catch some favorable lines from Vegas they could be a great cover team or at least one to keep tabs on for the unders on total plays

Quack,

I too like getting behind small schools and making an occasional wager on them, especially when my team has a shot.
For a little while I got behind the red turf at EWU and lucky me, they even won their division championship.

Southern Oregon College is in nearby Ashland. Their SOC Raiders won the NCAA Div. 3 football crown just this past Winter.
Their QB Austin Dodge literally owns the NAIA record book on QB's. He was also named NAIA player or the year and the
Atlanta Falcons have already snatched him up. Of course people will argue that Dodge just might encounter slightly more
skilled opponents in the NFL, but on the other hand the scouts are raving about the kid's mechanics and footwork... for that
he deserves a shot.

Dodge can straight up play! He's a true player. I came from the outside the Salem area and played ball all over so I'm very familiar with southern Oregon and the Ashland area. He should be able to hang on as a viable backup qb to Matt Ryan. He's got the skills to win games in the NFL.
By the way, I watched that game on ESPN 2 or 3 when they played for the title. They were so much better than everyone last season, and he was the main reason for that

Do you know who the coach of Southern Oregon is?

He was Tim Tebow's high school coach at Nease HS in St. Johns County, Florida. (Craig Howard)
