Gambler wins big and tips staff – only to demand it back two weeks later after losing winnings
Police were called to a betting shop after a gambler who tipped staff after a big win returned two weeks later to demand his money back.
The unlucky punter had walked away from Betfred in Manchester city centre with a “large amount of money”.
It is not known how much the man won or what he had bet on, but he had won enough to generously tip the staff at the Cross Street shop £60.
But the staff were shocked to see the man, aged in his 30s, return to the Betfred 14 days later in a totally different mood.
He stormed into the bookies around 1pm on Friday wearing a Chelsea football shirt and demanding his money back.
He had managed to lose all his winnings and wanted his £60 back.
He became aggressive and started to threaten staff, screaming: “You don’t know who I am. I want my money back by 3pm.”
The manager at the Betfred bookies called the police but the man left before officers reached the scene.
A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesman told the M.E.N.: “A male won a large amount of money two weeks ago and gave staff a tip.
“He then returned to the store asking for the tip back and making threats, the duty manager at Betfred reported to us.
“The male was aggressive and when staff asked him to leave he screamed; ‘You don’t know who I am. I want my money back by 3pm.’
“He left after that and the police call out was cancelled.”
The tip was not returned.
GMP sounded bemused when they posted a summary of the call out on their city centre Twitter account.
They wrote: “Odd job today at Bookies. Man who had big win 2 weeks ago and left £60 tip, came back and demanded it back as has now lost all his winnings [sic].”
