Dez Bryant tells Dallas Cowboys he'll skip training camp and sit out regular-season games until a long-term deal is reached.

Unless they reach agreement before Wed deadline. Once July 15th passes you can't sign long-term deals.

So you can't really do what Emmitt Smith once did and sitout, the team loses and panics and then pays you.

If I were Jones, I'd tell Mr. Bryant to "kiss my ass" and stay home and pay your bills
without the $12 plus million he would earn this season.

It would take a mighty big contract next season to make up for losing $12 million bucks.

I hope they tell him to fuck off.

The next contract negotiations between the owners and NFLPA should address this issue. It's bullshit. They have a contract/agreement and players that do this should face a stiff punishment. If they don't like it they can go start their own football league and see how well that goes.

He had no contract/agreement, he was a free agent.

Maybe these guys should start saving up now for the next work stoppage. If the vast majority of these guys didn't live paycheck to paycheck maybe they could've made out a little better in the last CBA.

He has the franchise tag, right? That's a contract....the players union agreed to this.

You gotta sign it still though. Just because the team has the capacity to tag you doesn't mean it is a contract.

There has been no agreement that you're speaking of.

He doesn't have to sign it.

Okay, then on that note...he doesn't have to play? Or collect a pay check..... Good for him having enough money that he can sit out an entire season and not get paid. Nice problem to have....

What's he supposed to say? Yeah I'm gonna sign it immediately so Dallas please make no effort to give me a long-term deal.

Obviously he is bluffing and it is a weak bluff but his agent is Tom Condon (agent for Manning/Brees/Eli) guy is no dummy. He knows that is all they can do right now until they sign it.

Dude is just trying to live the American dream like the rest of us, give em a break!

He isn't turning down 12mill. He will make 8 figures for playing football next season.

Wanting to get a signing bonus for 3-4x that is a worthy pursuit though. Seems like that much everyone should be able to agree on.

The best was when TO signed his deal with philly and heldout the next year. Now that was excessive.

I understand what you're saying....and all the franchise tagged players want long-term deals. But due to these type of "hold outs" I think it would serve both sides best (players and teams/owners) to put something in the contract about refusing to sign the tender. It was put in place for a reason and the teams have more invested in the long term success than just 1 player who wants more. No one can blame him for trying to get more (or a better "deal")...but the franchise tag was created for a reason. Teams invest a lot into players and some succeed, some don't. So when a player does have success that team "owns" the rights to that player.

Well actually they did do that. Because now the incentive to holdout is basically gone.

Once July 15th comes and a deal isn't in place, the tag is the only thing you can sign so there isn't really any reason to holdout past that point. Can't sign a deal until next March after July 15th

Seems like a good compromise.

See why playing hardball is a good strategy when you've got nothing to lose and you're the best player on the team?

Sometimes a franchise that hasn't won anything in 20 years ends up panicking and decides they need to pay you 70 million instead of 13. That's like 5.4 times more money! Decent haul.
