I'm not talking about a full on vacation. Just your favorite spot to take a 2-3 night break from work and your regular day to day grind.

Mine has to be Gatlinburg. IMO it sets up perfectly for the 3 day trip. About a 4 hour drive from where I live. Spend one full day in downtown Gatlinburg walking around shops, eating at local restaurants, playing some putt putt, riding the chair lift etc. Then the second full day spent in Pigeon Forge; riding go carts, seeing some attractions, eating at dixie stampede. And you last day can be a nature day, hiking in the mountains.

Pawley's Island or Beaufort, SC for beach type, and just about anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains for me for country.

Macau. It's a 45 min boat ride from here. Greatest gambling mecca in the universe, full of crazies

I like to take an hour drive to Pittsburgh, if you enjoy a city atmosphere i highly recommend. Those unfamiliar with the city will say something stupid.. it is an amazing place, and once you learn you way around its even better. I enjoy walking the river up one side and down the other. Had a nice time on the fourth there and even had my first beer in over a year @ Jerome Bettis's place outside Heinz filed. If you like water activities they are there and they have some amazing bike trails if you like to rideas I do...

If you happen to be there I highly recommend a Pirates game @ PNC, amazing place to watch a baseball game, not a bad seat in the place.

I find myself needing to get away from the world more often then ever before and head to Pittsburgh for the weekend or a day very often. Can get there quickly and escape!

newport RI is also a nice place to getaway for a weekend its really nice down there in the summer for bars and food , ive been there a bunch of times.

Only when it's not full on tourist time. Can get very crowded

True

Seems to be getting more and more crowded every year

Actually went the 2nd week of Dec , wasn't anyone there at first if week as it gets busy the week of Christmas thru New Years. Maybe 50 people walking the street , stayed in a chalet near the ski slopes, hot tub was nice at night as it was cold out , light snow, and the view looking down the mountain was nice Funny thing is all the t-shirt shops are now moon shine shops selling every flavor of moonshine.

It's a very Midwest vacation spot. I can definitly see how east or west coasters wouldn't know about it

East Coasters aye?! It's closer to me than it is to you. I prefer to spend most of my time outside of GBurg/PForge. My car really loves Deal's Gap and The Tail of The Dragon. Forbidden Caverns isn't far off in Sevierville, TN (home to Cracker Barrel (is that racist now?)), good trout fishing just about everywhere, and anywhere in the Great Smokey Mtns is beautiful. Not having kids and not in my 20's anymore, staying in the heart of GBurg/PForge just isn't for me. Too crowded and preppy. However kinda like SRay said, there are some nice cabins there for a good price in the off seasons.
