Movie Review - Southpaw

Went and saw Southpaw Saturday afternoon. Great great movie. Jake Gyllenhaal is superb. His wife is that hot chic from Ted 2 (Teds wife). He has slowly become one of my favorite actors. Awesome performance in this one again. I highly recommend this movie.

Synopsis - Boxer Billy Hope turns to trainer Tick Willis to help him get his life back on track after losing his wife in a tragic accident and his daughter to child protection services.

I just saw it and it was good.

Not sure you're right about the wife though. It was Rachel McCadams and I don't think she's in Ted 2 is she?

The previews look really good....but isn't the story line a little played?

-Washed up boxer.....has a life changing incident.....makes a comeback.....wins improbable title....mixed in is some cheesy love interest.

Filmed in Pittsburgh!

They used the old Saks 5th Avenue building as a fake MSG. They did film in Carrick's Boxing Academy but changed the gym's name.

Eminem was originally cast to play the lead role. That would have looked silly because he's like 5'6"

WTF has "5'6"" got to do w/anything?? He's not playing "Blind Side"!! Didn't stop them from having Cruise play Reacher, who IS 6'+ & 260 or so.

I will address your topics....

Washed up boxer - Wrong, He was at the top of his game throughout the movie

Makes a comeback - Wrong, He was champion and lost his title then got it back. Happens.

Wins improbable Title - Wrong. He held the same Title the whole movie. He was 43-0 when the movie starts.

Mixed in with some cheesy love interest - If you want to call his Wife cheesy....

Its a boxing movie dude with good acting and well done.

I wont go see this. Same dude that was in brokeback. Can't fathom thinking same dude that was taking it up the ass is now beating dudes asses. Besides NightCrawler, not sure I have seen a movie he has done that I enjoyed.

I think he's a great actor, and Nightcrawler proved that single handedly. He was awesome.

October Sky is a very good movie that nobody has seen, back from when he was only 16 or 17. Unless you're a total macho meathead, you will like this movie a lot.

I always liked Donnie Darko a lot. Plays a really good messed up kid in that one.

You are right about that movie. I forgot about October Sky. 1999 though he was a boy lol.

Still though he doesn't have a great list of movies under his belt. Everyone is calling him a great actor but I don't know if I would put him in the class of great actors. He doesn't have any classic movies really. I loved NightCrawler. Very original and he was spectacular. But this dude is not fucking wit my man Tom Hardy

The day after tomorrow? Please. All actors have done their shameful movies but this is an all time low.

Bubbleboy? He has done some garbage early on in his career besides october sky.

Rendition was good in 2007 I'll give him that one. But I don't agree with the great actor label. He's got a long ways to go though

He is very convincing in this Southpaw movie. Just saying. I read he trained at Floyd Mayweathers gym for a couple months leading up to making this movie. I liked it and think he's a great actor.

Well, it is a bit of a different role.

I suppose they could have cast Eminem and made him a feather weight or something. But to me the violence wouldn't seem as real or perhaps jarring if a guy that small was throwing the punches.

Did you ever see the movie Rudy? The kid that played Rudy is 5'7" and if you watch now it looks utterly preposterous that he is on the defensive line. That guy went on to play a Hobbit after all...
