Obviously, it's best to not do it, but there are plenty of other distractions that are just as bad. Playing with the radio, etc. Also, 90% of drivers on the interstate in the right lane on cruise control thinking they are safe drivers are not really driving. My dad is this driver. They don't check lanes, and are not aware of their surroundings. I actually think a much safer driver is the one who pushes the speed a little and changes lanes and is really driving and not just coasting.
I think a lot of other distractions are bad like eating or messing with the radio but usually its easier to do those things and keep your eyes on the wheel. I almost crashed when I was 17 going to McDonalds messing with the radio, was going maybe 45 mph and look up and the car in front of me is just stopped since they were making a left turn. Slammed on the breaks just in time but i probably would have totalled both cars. I still don't remember why i didnt just hop into the right lane but I was just glad the breaks worked well
