Auburn A Mess Of A Team

Three games into the season and the biggest train wreck of a team in college football resides in Auburn, Alabama. After almost losing to Jacksonville State, they lost Saturday to LSU (45-21) in a game that never was close. The QB play of Jeremy Johnson, to put it nicely, STINKS. As bad as Johnson has been, the revamped Will Muschamp defense has been even WORSE.

Gus Malzahn better get a handle on this mess NOW or the Tigers are in for a long year.

Full discloser: I thought both the QB and defense would make Auburn contenders this season. Maybe one reason I got my ass kicked in college football this weekend.

Oh well, been there before....................

I never thought their defense was going to do much this year. Even with Muschamp, he can only do so much to improve the defense. It takes somewhat of a change in philosophy to make a real difference.

But i did assume Jeremy Johnson would be really good. I think most people (myself included) just assumed any QB could be plugged in and run Malzahns offense and be successful. The last QB was a converted DB and ran it to perfection. So everyone assumed this highly recruited athletic QB would be a perfect fit. hes got a ton of picks already and had a handful of others dropped in just the little bit I've watched of him.

I do think he'll settle down and get mor comfortable but I don't think they should be ranked right now by any stretch of the imagination.

SECplayer, I'm guilty of promoting Johnson as one of the best QB's in the SEC. The kid has an NFL arm and a high school mentality for reading defenses. Jezz, maybe he's colorblind because he throws his interceptions right in the DB's arms.

Malzahn says he's evaluating everything: OK, how about looking at your second team quarterback. The kid (Sean White) was heavily recruited out of Florida and was an Under Armour All American HS player. Auburn's OC (Rhett Lashlee) said he was the most accurate
HS quarterback he has ever seen.

OK Auburn coaches....put the SOB in the game....ain't like he's going to be worse.

They are awful on both sides of the ball. I like their coaches though, I just think this is gonna be a long year.

Sure looking that way Willie....

Through 3 games, Auburn is one of the nation's worst defenses in the following categories:

RUSHING DEFENSE: 270 yards per game (124th among 128 FBS schools; worst among 65 power 5 schools.)
SCORING DEFENSE: 29.7 points per game (92nd in nation; 8th worst among Power 5 schools.)
THIRD DOWN DEFENSE: 50% (116th in nation; 3rd worse among Power 5 schools)

That's just the defense...offense has been God-awful as well.

That being said, I believe they cover against Mississippi State on Saturday.

From the CFB forum, Dated August 24:

Why is Auburn so high in spite of finishing 8-5, losing 11 starters, having a new QB and a new DC? Texas A&M looks to be in much better shape than Auburn. The analysts must either think that Johnson will be as good as Cam Newton, or that the magic duo of Saint Gus and Muschamp will sprinkle fairy dust on their players by virtue of their unparalleled collective genius...

School----------2014 W/L-------# New Starters------New QB?--------New OC-----New DC-----Preseason Rank

Auburn..................8-5.......................11...............Yes.................No.............Yes...................#6
LSU.......................8-5.........................8..............No..................No..............Yes...................#14
Ole Miss................9-4.........................6..............Yes.................No..............No...................#17
Arkansas...............7-6.........................7...............No..................Yes.............No...................#18
Tennessee.............7-6.........................4..............No...................Yes............No....................#25
Texas A&M...........8-5.........................6...............No..................No.............Yes...................#27
Florida..................8-5.......................11................No (Yes?).......Yes............Yes...................#36
USCe.....................7-6.......................10...............Yes..................No.............No (Yes)..........#45+

Texas A&M is in a similar situation. Sumlin is every bit as good an OC/HC as Malzahn. John Chavis arrived at College Station as Muschamp arrived on The Plains. Chavis is certainly in Muschamp's league as a DC. The Aggies have a returning starter at QB. They return more starters on both sides of the ball. Why are the Aggies dismissed while Auburn is getting top 5 love?

I'm not sold on A&M either, I'm just pointing out that Auburn is getting A LOT of hype considering the situation they are in.

Thoughts?

Coach, if Auburn loses to Mississippi State this weekend the season is probably shot.

Malzahn finally benched Johnson and will start redshirt freshman Sean White at QB. White
has not played a down but he's a hell of a competitor and accurate as a passer.

Lot of pressure on the kid but the change is overdue! By the way Coach...he's from Florida.

Yeah, it was discussed in the CFB forums. White is a stud....but all we heard in the offseason was that Johnson was a stud and likely to be All-SEC (see my link to the thread in the CFB forums).

Coach, I don't get into the CFB forum much these days.

Just took Auburn -2 for 3 dollars....must win for the Tigers.

Also, would be a good win for me after last week's debacle.

Thoughts on Lamberts play for UGA on Sat?

That's a fluke right? Friend went there and is a diehard, swears he sucks and SC is that bad on D. He was terrible at UVA

Bama goes there in 2 weeks. Interesting game.

Yeah Pats, I watched the Georgia game and he looked pretty damn comfortable to me. Lambert ain't what you would call an elite QB but with the Dawgs running game, they don't need the star to be the quarterback. Solid play by Lambert may just be the key for Georgia getting to the SEC title game and winning the conference title.

Jezz...the depth of Georgia's running backs is something else.....should carry them a long way.

As far as Bama in two weeks....hell, we have our own QB issues. Saban and Kiffin are not on the same page and have really made a mess out of what should have been a simple call. Announce Coker early and give him confidence then if he can't produce...bring in one of the other guys. It's not like Alabama doesn't have quarterbacks. Saban fucked this up early.

Key game for both teams my friend.....GA running game against Bama's front 7.

like watching a car accident in slo-mo

AUBURN, Ala. ― Auburn has dismissed receiver Duke Williams, coach Gus Malzahn announced Monday night.

"When individuals fail to meet the expectations of our program, there has to be consequences," Malzahn said. "I gave D’haquille the chance to prove himself. I am disappointed that it did not work out."

Williams had 12 catches for 147 yards and a touchdown in five games this season. He had 45 catches for 730 yards and five touchdowns last season after arriving as a junior college transfer

It's too bad, because he was a good receiver.

How was White not the starting QB in Week 1? This kid is light years ahead of the other guy.
