LEADING OFF: Arrieta goes for No. 21, Keuchel right at home

September 26, 2015

A look at what's happening around the major leagues Sunday:

EVERYTHING'S JAKE

Jake Arrieta's remarkable season can get a little more special if he can beat Pittsburgh. The right-hander, who leads the majors with 20 wins, can become the first Cubs pitcher with more than 20 victories since Ferguson Jenkins went 24-13 in 1971. A.J Burnett starts for the Pirates in the night matchup at Wrigley Field between playoff-bound teams.

HOME, SWEET HOME

Dallas Keuchel starts for the Astros as they try to hold onto the second AL wild-card spot. The lefty is 14-0 with a 1.47 ERA at Minute Maid Park this season. He'll face AL West-leading Texas, which leads Houston by 3 1/2 games.

FLYING WITH CLIPPED WINGS

The banged-up Cardinals wrap a series against the Brewers hoping to edge closer to an NL Central crown. St. Louis dropped its magic number to five Saturday, but also had infielder Matt Carpenter exit with left hip tightness not long after finding out pitcher Carlos Martinez is done for the year with a shoulder strain. The Cards are already without star catcher Yadier Molina, who will be re-examined Monday for a slight ligament tear in his left thumb. John Lackey faces rookie Tyler Cravy (0-8, 6.21), who's yet to win in 12 career appearances (six starts).

ROAD WORK

The Mets have won a team-record 10 straight road games, including Saturday's victory at Cincinnati that clinched the NL East. Jacob deGrom pitches for New York at Great American Ball Park, having given up at least eight hits in three of his last five starts - before that, he'd done that just once in his prior 38 starts.

ANOTHER TRY

Braves righty Shelby Miller aims to end a drought that almost defies belief - an All-Star this year, he's 0-15 in his last 23 starts. Miller has gotten the worst run support in the majors, the main reason he's 5-16 despite a 3.00 ERA. He'll try to break the streak when he pitches at Miami.

Preview: Twins (79-75) at Tigers (72-82)
Game: 3
Venue: Comerica Park
Date: September 27, 2015 1:08 PM EDT

Neither Ervin Santana nor Randy Wolf will pitch in the postseason, but one has a chance to help his team get there while the other wants to prove he can still compete.

A suspension already withdrew Santana's eligibility for the playoffs, but he will continue his push to get the Minnesota Twins there anyway. The 39-year-old Wolf is simply chasing his first win with the Detroit Tigers in Sunday's series finale at Comerica Park.

Despite seven losses in its last 11, Minnesota (79-75) enters 1 1/2 games behind Houston for the AL's second wild card after splitting the first two of this series.

The Twins let a 4-1 seventh-inning lead in the opener turn into a 6-4 loss, and while not calling Saturday's 6-2 victory a "must-win," manager Paul Monitor said his team can't give any more games away with eight left on the schedule.

"The days are dwindling, and the last thing we can afford is to give another one away," said Molitor, whose team is 7-11 versus Detroit this season.

Santana (6-4, 4.31 ERA) hasn't let much slip through his fingers this month, though his 80-game suspension earlier this season for the use of performance-enhancing drugs means he wouldn't reap the postseason reward.

The 11-year veteran is 4-0 in his last five with a 1.50 ERA, ranking toward the top of MLB in wins, ERA, strikeouts (39) and home runs per nine innings (0.25) since Aug. 30.

Santana - whose ERA rose to 6.05 on Aug. 25 - has one non-win during his hot stretch after surrendering two runs in seven innings of a 7-4, 12-inning loss to the Tigers on Sept. 16. Detroit rocked the right-hander for six runs in four innings July 10, though the Twins won 8-6. Santana had gone 5-1 with a 1.84 ERA in his prior eight against Detroit.

Victor Martinez has two home runs while hitting .357 in 28 at-bats against Santana, and Ian Kinsler has six doubles, a triple and a homer to go with a .323 average in 62 at-bats. Miguel Cabrera is 5 for 21 against Santana with a home run and five strikeouts.

Saturday's loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Detroit (72-82) and clinched its first losing season since 2008. Earlier in the day, general manager Al Avila announced that second-year manager Brad Ausmus would return for 2016.

"For the past two months, we've been evaluating every level of our baseball operations, and on Friday, I met with Brad and told him I wanted him to continue as manager of the Detroit Tigers," Avila said. "He and I are on the same page as to the future of this organization."

It's anyone's guess as to how much longer Wolf (0-4, 5.91) will be a part of it, but the veteran left-hander is focused on picking up the first win of his 16th season.

Wolf registered his third quality start in six outings Monday, but a 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox denied him his first win since June 2, 2014, after he allowed three runs in seven innings.

Wolf failed to escape the fifth inning in his three previous starts, surrendering 20 hits and 14 runs over 11 innings. Opponents are batting .307 against him.

Torii Hunter has just five at-bats against Wolf - logging a single and a home run - despite their careers overlapping since the late-90s.

Preview: White Sox (73-82) at Yankees (85-69)
Game: 4
Venue: Yankee Stadium
Date: September 27, 2015 1:05 PM EDT

If the New York Yankees' offense continues sputtering the way it has over the last six games, it won't be anything new for Luis Severino.

The next chance to break out comes Sunday at home in the series finale against the Chicago White Sox with time running out on their AL East title hopes.

The Yankees (85-69) have taken two of the first three in this set after Saturday's 2-1 victory, but Toronto and Houston also won, so they remain four games behind the Blue Jays in the division with eight to play. New York is 4 1/2 ahead of the Astros for the top wild card, so a celebration probably isn't far off.

"I'm excited to celebrate and taste some of the champagne," said Dellin Betances, whose bullpen crew has an AL-record 573 strikeouts. That's two more than the previous mark set by New York last year and 16 shy of Colorado's big league record established in 2012.

The Yankees have alternated wins and losses for six games while averaging 2.5 runs and hitting .223. Alex Rodriguez is batting .115 in his last 10 and Brett Gardner .116 in his last 13.

Nevertheless, they assured themselves at least a split with the White Sox and haven't allowed Chicago to win a series in the Bronx since its 2005 World Series season, going 25-8 since with victories in 10 of 11.

Severino (4-3, 3.10 ERA), who has allowed at least three runs twice in his first nine big league starts, isn't getting the run support he deserves with a 2.92 RSA while New York's starters overall have a 5.07 mark - third best in baseball behind Toronto and Texas. When given at least two runs of support, the right-hander is 4-0 in five outings.

The one time he didn't earn the decision was Tuesday's 6-4 win in 10 innings at Toronto after giving up two runs and three hits with three walks in six innings.

If there's a complaint with the 21-year-old, it's probably his control. After issuing one free pass in 11 innings over his first two starts, he's posted 4.70 walks per nine innings in his last seven outings.

He's up against International League Most Valuable Pitcher Erik Johnson, whose RSA is nearly three times that of Severino at 7.83 in his four starts since being recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Sept. 1.

Johnson (3-0, 3.52), though, was plenty deserving of the decision in Monday's 3-2 win at Detroit after limiting the Tigers to two runs and five hits with a career high-matching nine strikeouts in six innings.

"I felt good. It was a good first inning to put the right foot forward, and I thought I was very aggressive in the zone with fastball, slider, change," Johnson told MLB's official website. "I gave up a few hits. Sometimes the aggressiveness, you're going to run into some hits here and there."

The right-hander has allowed six home runs with at least one in each start, and he's walked 10 over 17 innings in his last three. He faced the Yankees for the only time in 2013 and took the loss with Gardner going 2 for 4 with a triple.

The White Sox (73-82), who were officially eliminated from postseason contention, have also been stagnant with 2.5 runs per game and a .203 average over a 4-7 span. They're in danger of falling 10 games under .500 for the first time since being 32-42 on June 29.

Despite seven straight seasons without playoff baseball, Chicago remains optimistic.

"I don't like to see this like something bad," Jose Abreu said through a translator. "This is something good for the future, and that's the way that I want to see."

Preview: Rays (75-80) at Blue Jays (89-65)
Game: 3
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: September 27, 2015 1:07 PM EDT

The Toronto Blue Jays are hardly satisfied even upon ending baseball's longest postseason drought.

And why would they be after securing one of the more anticlimactic playoff berths in major league history?

After finally celebrating a playoff spot a day after actually earning it, the Blue Jays look to take another step closer to the AL East title by sweeping a three-game series from the Tampa Bay Rays in Sunday's home finale.

Toronto's magic number to clinch a playoff spot was reduced to one after Friday's series-opening win, and it stayed there after the Los Angeles Angels defeated Seattle.

In the overnight hours, however, it became apparent that the Blue Jays (89-65) had in fact clinched their first playoff berth since 1993 because the three AL West teams vying for a spot - Texas, Houston and the Angels - all still play each other, making it impossible for all three to win as many games as Toronto already has.

Just for good measure, the Blue Jays officially cut their magic number to zero by beating the Rays 10-8 on Saturday. They followed up with a raucous champagne and beer celebration but insist their work isn't done.

"We expect to have another one of these when we win the division," Jose Bautista said. "That's our goal."

Toronto leads the second-place New York Yankees by four games with eight to play.

The Blue Jays have won five of six over the Rays (75-80) and conclude the season with three at Tampa Bay. Bautista has been instrumental to that success, hitting home runs Nos. 38 and 39 on Saturday to give him five homers in his last four against Tampa Bay.

Toronto is tied with the Astros for the AL's best home record at 52-28 and can match the 1992 club for the second-most home wins in team history. The 1985 team went a franchise-best 54-26.

Mark Buehrle (14-7, 3.69 ERA) gets the ball in what will be the final home game before a likely playoff date with his chances of extending his string of consecutive 200-inning seasons in serious jeopardy.

Buehrle is 14 2-3 innings away from joining Hall of Famers Warren Spahn, Don Sutton and Gaylord Perry as the only pitchers to have tossed at least 200 in 15 straight seasons since 1901, but with only two starts remaining, time isn't on his side.

He also has seemingly hit a wall, going six innings or less in each of his last six starts. The veteran left-hander has a 5.65 ERA with opponents batting .390 against him in three starts this month with the Blue Jays losing each. Buehrle went 1-1 with a 6.17 ERA in two April starts against the Rays and hasn't faced them since.

Tampa Bay counters with Matt Andriese (3-5, 4.37), who has made 10 relief appearances since starting at Kansas City on July 7. In the midst of his fifth stint in the majors this year, Andriese has a 5.27 ERA in 15 relief outings but a 3.62 ERA in seven starts.

In two starts against the Blue Jays - the last coming June 22 - the rookie right-hander is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA.

Edwin Encarnacion is 0 for 5 against Andriese, while Josh Donaldson is 2 for 4. Backup catcher Dioner Navarro is likely to start since he's 3 for 3 with a homer and double against Andriese and 9 for 21 with two home runs and two doubles in his last five games.

Evan Longoria is batting .340 over 47 career at-bats against Buehrle and Logan Forsythe is hitting .409 with four doubles in 22 at-bats in their matchups.

Preview: Braves (62-93) at Marlins (68-87)
Game: 3
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: September 27, 2015 1:10 PM EDT

Amid some strong individual efforts in a frustrating first year with Atlanta, Shelby Miller's most painful moment might have occurred the last time he pitched in Miami.

He was an out shy of a no-hitter there May 17 but hasn't won since, and the results may be leading to the strangest year for a starting pitcher in baseball history.

The right-hander returns to the mound at Marlins Park on Sunday as the Braves conclude a three-game series, and while many will point to an expansive winless stretch as this season's ultimate misfortune, there's a lot more to it.

Miller (5-16, 3.00 ERA) enters his second-to-last outing at 0-15 with a 3.65 ERA in 23 starts since dominating the Marlins. He's tied with Matt Keough (1979) for the second-longest single-season winless run behind Jack Nabors' 27 in a row in 1916. He could also become the first Braves pitcher to lose eight straight starts since Preston Hanna in '78.

Wait, it gets worse: With a .238 winning percentage, he's on pace to become the first with at least 30 starts and an ERA of 3.00 or lower with that poor of a percentage since Bob Groom went 7-26 (.212) with a 2.87 ERA in 1909. In fact, Miller would be the fourth in history to have a 30-start season with such an ERA and a percentage under .250.

However, it might be unfair to put Miller and Groom in the same category because Groom's numbers can't be considered an anomaly. The league ERA was 2.53 that season compared to the 2015 mark of 3.97 entering play Saturday. Groom's ERA was higher than the league, and Miller is nearly a full run better than his contemporaries.

The 24-year-old lost his seventh straight outing in Monday's 4-0 defeat at the New York Mets after giving up two runs and seven hits in six innings. In his last five, he's been given one run of support across 27 innings. His 2.30 season RSA is on pace to be the lowest for a qualifying pitcher since Jose DeLeon's 2.27 mark in '85.

"As bad as my streak has been, we're still playing hard baseball, and that is all that matters to me," Miller told MLB's official website. "It would be a lot different if it was going this way and it didn't seem like anybody was trying."

Miller has unsurprisingly lost both of his starts against the Marlins since the two-hit shutout, but he's 2-2 with a 1.16 ERA in five outings against them this season.

It doesn't help that after Saturday's 6-2 loss, the Braves (62-93) have dropped six straight to the Marlins (68-87), who can match a season-best five-game winning streak.

"They realize there is no rainbow at the end, in terms of postseason," said manager Dan Jennings, whose club has won 16 of 24. "But there is the mindset of, this core is together. This core is good. Finish this season strong and get ready for 2016."

Justin Bour homered for a second straight game, is batting .364 with five homers and 14 RBIs in his last 11 and is 3 for 5 against Miller.

Miami counters with Tom Koehler, who could join Miller and become baseball's seventh pitcher to lose at least 15 games this season.

Koehler (10-14, 3.94), however, has deserved his fate a bit more. The right-hander gave up four runs - three earned - and seven hits in five innings of Tuesday's 6-2 home loss to Philadelphia, falling to 2-8 with a 5.29 ERA in his last 11 starts.

Koehler is 1-4 with a 3.54 ERA in nine career starts against the Braves

Preview: Mets (88-67) at Reds (63-91)
Game: 4
Venue: Great American Ball Park
Date: September 27, 2015 1:10 PM EDT

Now that the New York Mets have punched their ticket to the postseason, they have their eyes on securing home-field advantage in the first round.

They're hoping Jacob deGrom will be revitalized in his first start in nearly two weeks Sunday when they face the Cincinnati Reds seeking an 11th consecutive road win.

New York sealed its first playoff appearance since 2006 and just its second division title in 27 years with Saturday's 10-2 victory behind Matt Harvey's 6 2-3 innings. The Mets (88-67) are looking at a likely NL division series matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles owns a hefty lead in the NL West over San Francisco, which is on the brink of elimination.

"It's worth all the time, all the effort, all the things you do - this is the culmination of it all," manager Terry Collins said. "We're going to have a little fun tonight and relax tomorrow. Right now we have to go get home field (advantage), that's next."

The Mets' offense has been firing on all cylinders, scoring 28 runs in the first three games against Cincinnati to put themselves in position for their fourth consecutive sweep of a four-game series. They homered three times Saturday for the second straight game, highlighted by Lucas Duda's first-inning grand slam, the first of his career. Duda has 12 RBIs in this series.

Saturday's victory was also New York's franchise-record 10th straight on the road. The Mets are hitting .305 and averaging 8.3 runs with 43 homers while winning 18 of 20 away from home, and their .625 winning percentage (25-15) all-time at Great American Ballpark is the highest among NL teams.

DeGrom (13-8, 2.64 ERA) missed Tuesday's start against Atlanta for extra rest. He's up to 181 innings after throwing 140 1-3 during his Rookie of the Year campaign last season and has given up six earned runs twice in his last five outings. Before that stretch, his 1.98 ERA trailed only Zack Greinke for the NL lead.

The 10 hits he gave up Sept. 15 against Miami were the second-most of his career.

New York is hoping a plan similar to the one it employed last year pays off again. DeGrom didn't pitch between Aug. 7-23 in 2014 because of tendinitis in his right rotator cuff. He finished strong after coming back, going 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his final six starts.

"The location of his pitches is not what it needs to be," Collins said. "This guy became extremely successful because of the sink with his fastball, where he got ground balls, and right now he's getting fly balls cause everything seems to be moving up."

DeGrom, who is 5-0 over his last eight road starts, has never faced the Reds or any of their current players.

Cincinnati (63-91) has dropped seven straight for the third time this season, averaging 2.7 runs during that skid.

Keyvius Sampson (2-5, 6.45) comes off one of his better starts during a rough rookie season, limiting St. Louis to one run over 5 1-3 innings in Cincinnati's 3-1 road loss Tuesday. The Reds are looking for Sampson to bring the success back home, where he's 0-4 with an 8.74 ERA in five starts.

Preview: Orioles (76-78) at Red Sox (74-80)
Game: 3
Venue: Fenway Park
Date: September 27, 2015 1:35 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles are going to need a lot of help to reach the playoffs for the third time in four years, especially if they keep failing to help themselves.

They'll try to avoid a three-game sweep against the Red Sox in the teams' final meeting of the season Sunday in Boston.

Saturday's hit to Baltimore's increasingly slim playoff chances was twofold. The Orioles (76-78) lost 8-0 to the Red Sox, while Houston won 9-7 against Texas, lowering Baltimore's elimination number to four. The Orioles have been held to seven hits in being shut out through the first two games of this set. They had been averaging 5.2 runs while winning 11 of the previous 15 meetings in the season series.

"We haven't scored in the last two days, so that kind of starts and ends there for me," manager Buck Showalter said. " ... I'll be the first to tip my hat to the other team, but we're capable of better."

Baltimore also matched a season high with three errors Saturday, including two by Manny Machado. Machado is not swinging the bat particularly well, either, hitting .207 in his last eight games.

The Orioles would love to get Adam Jones back after he missed a fifth straight game due to back spasms, though Showalter said he was available off the bench.

Ubaldo Jimenez (12-9, 4.16 ERA) has put the brakes on his post-All Star break slump for Baltimore, going 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in his last four starts compared to 2-5 and 7.50 in his previous nine. He was excellent in Tuesday's 4-1 win at Washington, giving up one unearned run over six innings for his 100th career victory.

Jimenez walked five and has issued 14 free passes over 23 2-3 innings in his last four starts, though he's limited opponents to a .202 batting average in the same span.

"You're going to have to sometimes live with it," Showalter said of Jimenez's propensity for walks. "That's a little bit more than you want to."

Boston has had Jimenez's number historically. He's 2-3 with a 7.96 ERA in 10 career starts, allowing four runs over five innings before leaving without a decision in a 6-5 win Sept. 15. He's averaged an abysmal 7.2 walks per nine innings over the last five meetings, but managed to come away with a road victory June 23 after allowing three runs in five innings in a 6-4 win.

Pablo Sandoval missed a sixth straight game for Boston (74-80) due to pneumonia but manager Torey Lovullo said his condition was improving. He's batting .359 with five extra-base hits in 39 at-bats against Jimenez.

This has also been a good matchup for Dustin Pedroia (9 for 24) and Mookie Betts (4 for 9).

The Red Sox will start left-handed rookie Henry Owens (3-3, 4.41), who threw 7 2-3 shutout innings in a 10-1 victory at Baltimore on Sept. 16. He had a perfect game through four innings in his next start Tuesday against Tampa Bay, but he ended up yielding five runs and seven hits over 7 1-3 innings in a 5-2 defeat.

"The consistency was definitely there early," he told MLB's official website. " ... I think I just did a poor job those last few innings. There was definitely positives from the outing I will take."

Owens is 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in five starts at Fenway Park, allowing seven homers in 28 1-3 innings.

Preview: Phillies (58-97) at Nationals (79-75)
Game: 3
Venue: Nationals Park
Date: September 27, 2015 1:35 PM EDT

The Washington Nationals have probably known since a five-game losing streak earlier this month that playoff baseball wasn't in their immediate future. Now that it's a certainty, they'll get on with the rest of the season with eyes on 2016.

The first of eight consolation games comes Sunday at Nationals Park in the conclusion of a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies, though Bryce Harper still has some individual business to attend to.

Washington (79-75) ended a four-game losing streak with Saturday's 2-1 win over the Phillies (58-97) in 12 innings, but the New York Mets won earlier to clinch the NL East.

"I'm more surprised than anything else, I think," Jayson Werth said. "I never thought we'd end up here. Obviously, we've underachieved."

The 22-year-old Harper has not. Possibly headed for his first MVP award, he was 3 for 5 with a walk-off double, boosted his MLB-best average to .339 and got within four RBIs of 100 for the first time. However, there might be more notoriety in failing to get there.

If he doesn't reach 100, he'll join Barry Bonds (2003), Ken Griffey Jr. (1994), Hank Aaron ('69) and Mickey Mantle ('58) as the only players to hit at least .300 with 40 or more home runs and fewer than 100 RBIs. Seattle's Nelson Cruz could also join them.

Of that group, only Bonds went on to win the MVP, but he hit .341 - the only average higher than Harper's - and no one on that list won a batting title.

Philadelphia (57-96) has lost nine of 11 and fallen within a game of going 40 under .500 for the first time since 1997. The Phillies have matched their losses from 2000 and 1972 - their most since dropping 99 in 1969 - but still see some value in the season.

"Some of us haven't even played this long," rookie Aaron Nola said. "It's a good experience for us."

They'll face Gio Gonzalez (11-8, 3.94 ERA), who began September impressively but regressed into his preceding struggles in Tuesday's 4-1 home loss to Baltimore. The left-hander gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings after going 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA in his previous three starts.

Gonzalez is 2-4 with a 5.23 ERA in his last eight starts while giving up four earned runs or more in half of them. He figures to end the year with his highest ERA since posting a 5.75 mark with Oakland in 2009.

In the latest outing, the 30-year-old blamed himself for straying from catcher Jose Lobaton's plan.

"Lobby had a great plan. I tried to reinvent the wheel. I tried to change it up on these guys," Gonzalez told MLB's official website. "... My mistake making bad choices of pitches."

Gonzalez is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in his last four starts against the Phillies, though Darin Ruf is 8 for 21 with three home runs, two doubles and seven walks against him.

Aaron Harang is headed for free agency, so the right-hander would like his final two starts to be as impressive as possible. Harang (6-15, 4.93) pitched seven innings in Tuesday's 6-2 win in Miami, surrendering two runs and seven hits to earn his second win in 19 starts since May 14. In that time, he's 2-12 with a 6.37 ERA.

The 37-year-old has been better against Washington in his two full seasons in the NL East, going 3-3 with a 2.60 ERA in seven starts. Werth has gone just 3 for 26 against him with 11 strikeouts, but Harper is 10 for 22 with a home run, triple and double.

Preview: Indians (77-76) at Royals (89-65)
Game: 3
Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
Date: September 27, 2015 2:10 PM EDT

Three wins in four games allowed Kansas City to celebrate an AL Central title on Thursday. A few days later, the Royals have pushed what was inevitable aside and are back to worrying about the bigger picture.

Following a pair of ugly home losses to the wild card-hopeful Cleveland Indians, Kansas City will try to regain its edge for home field advantage throughout the playoffs in the series finale on Sunday.

Kansas City (89-65) secured a division title with a 10-4 victory over Seattle on Thursday, but that is one of just seven wins in the last 21 games. The two latest defeats dropped the Royals into a tie with Toronto for the AL's top record, good for home field as long as they're in the postseason.

Toronto holds the tiebreaker with a 4-3 advantage in the season series and eight games remaining.

'We'll see," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "We've got to go out and win baseball games. That'll take care of everything.'

The Royals can feel good about last year, when they entered the AL wild-card game with a 10-10 record before rattling off a record eight straight playoff wins. They won't feel as good about their last two.

Kansas City mustered just one hit while striking out 15 times in a 6-0 loss against Carlos Carrasco in the series opener, and allowed 12 hits in a 9-5 defeat on Saturday.

The Royals' ERA was 3.53 before Sept. 3, but it is 5.58 since. Kansas City starters hold a 6.30 ERA in the last 22 games, something the Royals hope a familiar, yet fresh face can help with in the series finale.

Veteran Chris Young beat out rookie Miguel Almonte for the job to replace the struggling Jeremy Guthrie in Kansas City's rotation, and he will make his first start since July 28.

Young (10-6, 3.29 ERA) went 7-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 16 starts from early May to late July but has spent the last month and a half in the bullpen. His most recent start came in Cleveland, where he surrendered one run in 4 2-3 innings of a 2-1 win.

The Indians handed Young his second loss of the year when they tagged him for six runs in five innings of a 6-2 win on June 4. Young has a 6.60 ERA in his last three starts against Cleveland.

The Indians (77-76) moved above .500 for the first time since April 9 with their fifth win in the last seven games against Kansas City. Cleveland has won three straight overall and is three games behind Houston for the second wild card.

'It's been a lot of hard work those guys have gone into to get us back to kind of being respectable and being in this race," Indians manager Terry Francona said.

Cleveland hands the ball to Danny Salazar for the finale. Salazar (13-9, 3.51) finally quieted Eric Hosmer en route to a 5-1 win over the Royals on Sept. 16, holding them to one run in seven innings. Hosmer went 0 for 3 with a walk after homering off the right-hander in the first two matchups earlier this year - a win and a loss for Salazar after he allowed eight runs in 13 innings.

Hosmer's seven-game hitting streak was snapped on Saturday, but he is hitting .355 since Sept. 18. The first baseman is 7 for 17 against Salazar with two homers and three doubles.

Salazar has a 5.11 ERA in his last four starts against the Royals despite striking out 30 in 24 2-3 innings.

Preview: Rangers (84-70) at Astros (81-74)
Game: 3
Venue: Minute Maid Park
Date: September 27, 2015 2:10 PM EDT

After picking up a crucial game on the Texas Rangers behind a power barrage, the Houston Astros next lean on their ace to move them closer in the AL West race.

Dallas Keuchel puts a 20-start home unbeaten streak on the line in Sunday's matchup with a Rangers team that dealt the All-Star his worst outing of the season earlier this month.

Houston (81-74) used a season-high six home runs - two each from Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve - to move within 3 1-2 games of the Rangers and keep hold of the AL's second wild card with Saturday's wild 9-7 win. The Astros overcame an early 3-0 deficit and withstood a three-run rally in the ninth to end an eight-game series losing streak.

Correa's second homer forged a 4-all tie in the third and gave the 21-year-old 21 this season, breaking Dickie Thon's franchise record for a shortstop and tying Lance Berkman's club rookie mark.

"His ability to stay calm in the moment continues to shine through," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.

Altuve recorded his first multi-homer game one day after exiting Houston's 6-2 loss in the series opener when he collided with Correa while chasing a popup.

'I need to hit him every single day so he hits homers the next day,' Correa joked.

The Astros have to like their chances of gaining further ground, as Keuchel (18-8, 2.51 ERA) enters Sunday's finale 14-0 with a 1.47 ERA in 17 home starts this season. He's won 15 straight decisions at Minute Maid Park since permitting five runs in six innings in a 6-2 loss to Texas on Aug. 10, 2014.

Keuchel extended the stretch by holding the Los Angeles Angels to a run over 7 2-3 innings in Monday's 6-3 victory, bouncing back from a Sept. 16 shellacking at Texas in which he was tagged for a career-high nine runs and 11 hits, including three homers, in 4 2-3 innings.

The Cy Young candidate has had better success against the Rangers in his home park. Keuchel has allowed one run over 15 innings in two season meetings at home, the last a 10-0 victory July 19 where he struck out a career-high 13 and threw seven innings of two-hit ball.

Josh Hamilton is 7 for 18 with a homer against Keuchel and made his first start since Aug. 15 Saturday. The former AL MVP had been limited to two pinch-hitting appearances in his return from Sept. 11 left knee surgery.

'It's still day to day based off how he feels,' Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. 'We're at a point now where we need to find out how it's going to go.'

Martin Perez (3-5, 5.21) hopes to duplicate his performance when matched up against Keuchel on Sept. 16, when the left-hander yielded a run in seven innings of a 14-3 victory. He improved to 4-1 with a 2.00 ERA in five career starts against Houston, completing at least seven innings in four of them.

Perez wasn't as sharp in his follow-up, surrendering five runs and walking three in four-plus innings of Tuesday's 8-6 win at Oakland.

Prince Fielder homered off Keuchel in the most recent matchup and was 3 for 5 with two RBIs Saturday, raising his season totals to .377 with 18 RBIs in 18 games against Houston. Shin-soo Choo homered for a second straight game and is 12 for 18 with seven RBIs in the teams' last four meetings.

Preview: Brewers (65-90) at Cardinals (98-57)
Game: 4
Venue: Busch Stadium
Date: September 27, 2015 2:15 PM EDT

The St. Louis Cardinals have their highest win total at home in 72 years. John Lackey has been a major contributor to that success.

Lackey takes the mound for the Cardinals' home finale looking to beat the Milwaukee Brewers again Sunday ahead of a critical series that could determine the NL Central race.

St. Louis (98-57) is 55-25 at home after winning Saturday's series opener 5-1, securing the franchise's most home wins since accumulating 58 in 1943.

Lackey (13-9, 2.74 ERA) is 11-4 with a 2.06 ERA in 21 home starts since being acquired from Boston before last year's trade deadline. All of those outings have been quality starts, giving Lackey baseball's longest streak to start a tenure with any club since 1914.

The right-hander improved to 9-4 with a 1.97 ERA in 16 starts at Busch Stadium this year after a 3-1 victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday. He yielded one run and scattered nine hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings, going at least that far for the 17th time in St. Louis.

"Arm strength, knowledge and execution have come together this year pretty well for me," Lackey said. "Been a good deal."

Lackey is 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA in four starts against the Brewers (65-90) this year. He's won all three matchups - two this year - at Busch behind a 2.14 ERA.

"When he's throwing the ball well, we want him on the mound," manager Mike Matheny told MLB's official website.

While Matheny will want to give Lackey the ball in the postseason, the playoff-bound Cardinals prefer him to just move them closer to a division title. Their magic number to clinch the Central is five as they sit three games ahead of Pittsburgh with seven to play.

The Cardinals and Pirates open a three-game series Monday.

Matt Holliday will try to enter that series with some momentum after hitting a pair of RBI doubles Saturday. He was 1 for 8 over his first five games since returning from a strained right quadriceps that landed him on the disabled list for six weeks.

"Just a real nice stroke and the ball jumping off his bat," Matheny said. "That's the guy we want him to be."

The Cardinals have won nine of 11 against the Brewers, who have dropped 12 of their last 15 games with the rotation compiling a whopping 7.17 ERA.

Tyler Cravy (0-8, 6.21) takes the mound in St. Louis for the first time since losing his major league debut 1-0 on June 2. The right-hander allowed one run in seven innings of a spot start.

He wasn't close to being that effective at home against the Cardinals on Aug. 7, surrendering six runs in five innings of a 6-0 loss.

Cravy faces them now in his second start since returning from a right elbow injury that landed him on the disabled list for nearly three weeks. He gave up two runs and three hits while throwing 60 pitches in four innings of Tuesday's 4-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Adam Lind is 2 for 18 in his last seven games against the Cardinals, but the first baseman is batting .450 with six doubles in 40 at-bats versus Lackey.

Preview: Giants (80-74) at Athletics (65-90)
Game: 3
Venue: O.co Coliseum
Date: September 27, 2015 4:05 PM EDT

Jarrett Parker's historic performance helped San Francisco clinch the Bay Bridge Series.

On the brink of being eliminated from postseason contention, it may be one of the few things the Giants can hang their hat on.

The Giants will try to close out this series Sunday with another road victory against the rival Oakland Athletics, though it may be their last day in the playoff race.

San Francisco (80-74) could be eliminated Sunday depending on this result and how the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers do in Colorado. The club was able to enjoy a 14-10 victory Saturday behind Parker, who hit three home runs with seven RBIs, the first such performance by a Giant since Willie Mays hit four homers and drove in eight in a win at Milwaukee on April 30, 1961.

"That's unbelievable," Parker said. "Speechless. I can't really even respond to that to be even be mentioned in that kind of company."

Parker is batting .370 through his first 14 career games, homering five times in the last three.

"He looks like 'The Natural' right now the way he's swinging the bat," said manager Bruce Bochy, who called it the best offensive performance he had ever seen.

The win pushed San Francisco's advantage this year against Oakland to 4-1, securing just its second season series win in six years. A win Sunday would also mark just the second road series victory overall in eight tries for the Giants.

Buster Posey went 2 for 5 Saturday with a double and continues to enjoy hitting against the A's, going 11 for 20 in the season series. He had been hitting just .225 over his last 11 games prior to this weekend set.

Chris Heston (11-10, 3.51 ERA) is still looking for his first victory since July 27, going 0-5 with a 4.60 ERA in nine starts since. He owns a 2.7 run-support average in that span compared to 5.9 previously. Heston can't blame his offense too much for his winless drought, though, having completed 4 2-3 innings or fewer six times in his last nine games.

Inefficiency has been one of the reasons Heston hasn't been able to go deeper. He walked five in San Francisco's 4-2 win at San Diego on Tuesday, getting pulled after he loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning despite yielding two hits and no runs.

Heston is 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA in four interleague starts.

Oakland (65-90) continues to struggle to find quality pitching down the stretch. Barry Zito lasted just two-plus innings and gave up four runs Saturday in his first start since 2013, running the Athletics' ERA up to 8.56 during a 1-6 stretch.

Sean Nolin (1-1, 4.57) will make his fifth start since being called up from Triple-A Nashville. The left-hander had given up three runs or fewer in each of his first three before surrendering five runs and seven hits over five-plus innings before escaping without a decision in an 8-6 loss to Texas on Tuesday.

Posey is 14 for 29 against lefties since Aug. 30.
