Very interesting article. Key points:

1. Apparently the 2006 online ban is in place because people become addicted to gambling and lose money. Note that happens today and every state sponsors lotteries.
2. 90%+ of Internet traffic to offshore sports books comes from America. Note that America's national political class are too stupid to capitalize on this by allowing Nevada books to offer action from their own Web sites. I guess because gambling is addicting
3. I still maintain fantasy sports will be banned before any action is taken by the federal government to ease gaming restrictions.

This guy is a special sort of a-hole:

Representative Jim Leach, the Iowa Republican who sponsored the bill, said he objected to the fantasy sports exemption, but compromised to secure some restrictions on Internet betting, which he regarded as a clear and present danger. “You can get over your head quite quickly in a very dangerous kind of way,” Mr. Leach said.

Other good tidbits:

The Times opened its account with Bovada using a post office box. Bovada followed up with an email advising that deposits “will often show up on your credit card statement as billed by a foreign company with a name other than Bovada.” It cautioned: “In the event your bank contacts you to verify these transactions, we wanted to send you a quick note to remind you of the billing descriptions.”

During one recent 12-month period, Bovada received 190 million visits from computers, with 97 percent coming from the United States, according to an analysis of Internet traffic.

Finally:

Young men, he said, tend to believe that by playing and watching sports they can better predict the outcome. “I dealt with a sports announcer who lost $100,000 on one Sunday playing football,” he said. “He came to me, and he said, ‘If a monkey was throwing darts at a board, the monkey would have done better than I did. How could I lose 12 out of 13 games when I know all the statistics?’ ”

LMFAO

PBS is doing a Frontline documentary on this in the winter.

Read the whole thing.

I have money at draft kings. I played a 2 day baseball contest other day. The guy in first place had 10 entries of the same team. He won 1-10 prize money. Something weird about that. Not sure what but something.

You you think it will be banned nationwide?

There won't be a federal law banning it I doubt. Not anytime soon.

Just states likely start a domino effect and that is just as bad. These sites can't do much for the states the way local casinos/lottery/etc can.

@Vitterd....That is called "running a train" in fantasy terms, when you put the same team into the tourney multiple times. Not to be confused with the other meaning of the term.

I've never done fantasy sports. I just don't get the appeal. I am surprised a player would be allowed to do that?

I don't think there will be some federal ban of fantasy, I think we will quickly be at the point where 10 states ban it and then Congress will do something stupid. What, exactly, I don't know...

Imo this 'running the train' shouldn't be allowed.. Just gives a bad look/feel to the average player and stuff like this will play a part in the sites failing (if they do).

Only reason to do so would be if there were some type of overlay and you just didn't have time to make teams last minute.

It depends on the size of the field, but generally it isn't a smart strategy.

I just decided to try it. Deposited small amount. Have cashed for like 11 bucks, 6 bucks a bunch of times but once the money runs out....I won't be going back.

Yeah, you can check the standings of the contest you're in....and one guy had same exact lineup 10 times....he finished 1-10 and collected all that prize money....which I think was upwards of 70k or in that range.

Lol.....running a train huh? Good stuff.

I guess people have all kinds of strategy....I just play a lineup and hope to get lucky.

It was a playoff MLB slate? Possible he just liked his team a ton because there are only so many combinations you can use on a 2 game slate.

What was his name?

It looked shady to me.....I guess it's a strategy. I don't know.

It was a playoff slate. I didn't take note of the name though. It was a day where there were 2 baseball playoff games....I don't recall which day.

Well you can download a csv file of all the rosters so he clearly didn't cheat, if that is what you are implying.

"Running the train" looks bad but it really isn't a good strategy. As far as people mass entering tons of teams into tournaments, if the site was allowed to continue to grow then you would see limits on that down the line. Right now they need those high vol players to drive bigger and bigger prize pools since growth is everything.

i agree .

It would be like that time I got that wise idea on a 2 team 6 point teaser.
I found a game I though was a lock so I put that team in every single play thinking it would be like getting 6 free points on every single straight wager basically . The lock lost and I went o for.

I wouldn't put too much thought into it Vitt. Casino lobby seems to be pretty strong in PA and I doubt they want people staying home and playing on DraftKings.

Big Gov't Crony capitalism at it's finest.

I don't put too much thought into it. Almost none actually. Just saw something I thought was strange.

Ive had some luck in life though.....so, when I cash out a few hundred grand in one of those big contests......I will let you know about it. Lol
