Woman hits $8M jackpot, casino claims machine malfunctioned

By Emily Kirschenheuter, KRON

BEAVERTON, Ore. (KRON) — A woman in Oregon hit the $8 million jackpot at a Lucky Eagle Casino slot machine, but got no money.
The casino said it was a machine malfunction and gave her $80 instead, reported KOIN’s Lisa Balick.

Veronica Castillo took her mother to the casino in Rochester, Washington last weekend. She put $100 in a machine and hit the jackpot — she thought.
“I was very excited, happy,” she told KOIN 6 News. “Then I couldn’t believe it.”

The casino staff came over and told her the machine malfunctioned.

“They shut off the machine, took it away, printed out a ticket and gave me $80.”

The casino machines have a sticker that says a malfunction of the machine voids all pays and plays.

“To me, it’s cheating, may even be fraudulent,” Castillo told KOIN 6 News. “My first thought was, how many people has this happened to? They think they won, then going away empty-handed.”

Casino CEO John Setterstrom, who has been with the casino since before it opened in 1995, told KOIN 6 News this has never happened there before. He said he is working to get answers from the manufacturer and wants to keep Castillo as a customer.

She is working to get an attorney.

just bullshit

have heard casinos make this claim before, but never once heard of them giving people money because their machine malfunctioned and they should have won more

Think the full story states that the machine only pays 200k or something so there is some validity on the casino part. They say if she would've hit the true jackpot, her real prize money would've been 8k which I think the casino should at least give her. This is no different then when an offshore book puts out a bad line only to cancel it later yet most of us still play at them anyways. I do agree dealing with casinos is a bad habit regardless if they cheat or not lol

Out here in California, (Pala Casino) I witnessed an old lady hitting a $6500 jackpot on a $1 machine. After a bunch of suits showed up and 35 minutes of meeting and walkie talkie squack, they paid her $68.00 and told her without proper US identification she's not entitled to the winnings. She was from El Salvador and didn't speak any English. She came in on one of those senior citizen buses and was accompanying a friend.

How screwed is that? (Indian casino as well)

they lied, she's entitled to it and they have to withhold 35% federal income tax

foreigners frequent our casinos on a regular basis, they never would if they couldn't get paid

unless there's some state law that I'm not aware of

how could the machine say she won 8 million if the max payout is 8k or 20k?

that doesn't seem possible

Yeah, okay.

"Show her the money! The loan officer is getting an attorney. She said she'd like the prize money, but more than that she wants this not to happen to other people"

Thought the same thing too. My wife spoke to her to find out what the problem was. She couldn't call her friend over as she didn't have a cell. We were in a hurry and on our way out. Felt bad about not helping her further by questioning the law or casino policy.
