BOSTON -- New Red Sox boss Dave Dombrowski on Friday night made his first big move to rebuild the franchise after its third last-place finish in four years, acquiring four-time All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel from the San Diego Padres for four prospects.

Kimbrel, who saved 39 games for the Padres this season, spent the first five years of his career with the Atlanta Braves before they traded him to San Diego on the eve of the 2015 regular season. The Red Sox assumed $25 million remaining on Kimbrel's contract but have him under control for up to three more seasons.
"Moving to the American League, I'm excited," Kimbrel said during a conference call. "It's a league that has the big bats. And being a pitcher, you want a challenge of facing the big bats."

The Padres received outfielder Manuel Margot, infielders Javier Guerra and Carlos Asuaje, and left-hander Logan Allen. Only Asuaje and Margot made it as high as Double-A last season.

"We didn't give anything up at the major league level to affect our club this year," Dombrowski said. "It's good talent. Some of it's a while away."
Kimbrel, 27, went 4-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 61 appearances last season, 43 of them save opportunities, and he struck out 87 in 59 1/3 innings. Since the start of his first full season in 2011, he leads major league relievers with 224 saves and ranks second among them with a 1.70 ERA and 523 strikeouts.
He recorded his 200th save in his 318th game, the fastest in major league history.

Fantastic trade for San Diego

They got more talent in this deal then they gave away when they traded for Kimbrel

I am a Red Sox fan, but as far as closers go...there was Mariano and there is everyone else...the MOST over rated thing in sports is 9th inning closers in baseball....it's silly....yet teams continue to throw all this money at them. Sox won the WS 3 times in last 12 years with 3 diff closers....again its just silly.

Craig Kimbrel recorded another heart attack save for the Boston Red Sox today. Yes, he hardly ever makes the ninth inning routine.

The right-handed fireballer and the Red Sox led 7-4 entering the bottom of the ninth. But Kimbrel walked Ian Kinsler and Nicholas Castellanos on nine pitches to begin the inning.

Kimbrel almost gave up a game-tying three-run homer to Victor Martinez who cranked a line drive foul by only a few feet. The Red Sox escaped with a 7-5 victory.

How are the four prospects who Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski traded to the San Diego Padres for Kimbrel doing?

The 22-year-old Manuel Margot is the best prospect of the four. Baseball America ranked him the No. 24 MLB prospect on its 2017 preseason top 100 list.

He batted leadoff for San Diego during the first week and he's off to a fast start. Many view him as an NL Rookie of the Year favorite.

The center fielder is 7-for-23 (.304 batting average) with a .360 on-base percentage, .696 slugging percentage, 1.056 OPS, three doubles, two homers, four RBIs, two walks, four runs and one stolen base in six games for the Padres so far in 2017.

The 21-year-old Javier Guerra has struggled since the trade. The shortstop posted only a .202/.264/.325/.589 line in 105 games at High A last year. He returned to High A again this year and is 2-for-13 (.154).

The 25-year-old Carlos Asuaje, a second baseman, made his major league debut last year. He went 5-for-24 (.208) in seven games for the Padres during September. He began 2017 with Triple-A El Paso where he's 3-for-11 (.273).

The 19-year-old Logan Allen, a left-handed pitcher, began this season with the Fort Wayne TinCaps, the Low-A affiliate of the Padres. He allowed two runs, both earned, in 3 innings during his first start. He went 3-4 with a 3.33 ERA in 15 outings (11 starts) for Fort Wayne last year.

Kimbrel's fine.

The Sox middle relief allowed 6 runs to blow that game. Never got to Kimbrel.
