Georgia (9-3) has fired head coach Mark Richt, a source told ESPN's Mark Schlabach. Richt was 144-51 in 15 seasons at the school, winning SEC titles in 2002 and 2005. The Bulldogs went to a bowl game every year Richt was at the school.

Kirby Smart here I come. If hired he could do some serious damage at UGA

[h=1]May: Why not Mack Brown for Georgia?

[/h]Mark May says Georgia should look to the Longhorn state -- and Network -- for its next coach: "Mack Brown. ... There's a lot of coaching left in him, and I think he can carry them over the barrier."

He's still a huge gamble with no head coaching experience. That's a lot of money for a huge gamble, and it may cost even more now with SC driving the price up a bit, but I know it's been in the waiting for awhile now.

It's always somewhat of a gamble when you hire a coordinator without any head coaching experience. I think Smart should have enough experience around Saban to know how to run a big time program. Muschamp didn't work out well, but you never know until you give a guy a chance.

Oh I agree. Was just saying. I mean it's basically the job that was meant to be anyways.

Had Richt not mismanaged the clock in the SEC Championship against Bama and won that game, they most likely would've beaten ND with Aaron Murray at QB.

Wonder how that would've changed things?

Chip Kelly is not going to win in the NFL but he can coach at the college level.

I'd go after him hard if I were Georgia, USC or S. Carolina.

Agree....but it seems that Smart has been hanging out at Bama for a reason: to get the Bama job (after Saban retires) or to wait out UGA/Richt. He's been offered several other head coaching gigs and has turned them down. His salary at Bama kept going up, up, up. So he's been holding out on taking a head job for a reason. Will be curious to see if he gets the offer.

The UGA AD (McGarity) was an assistant under Foley at UF. He works in a very similar fashion. This has obviously been in the works (the firing) for a while....so I imagine he has a short list of legitimate candidates. He was at UF when Meyer was hired. So the Herman hire would make sense (he may want to bring in a coach from the Meyer tree).....and Smart would bring in a lot of support from the UGA faithful (bringing in a homegrown/alum).

This job and Southern Cal are the top 2 jobs on the board. Will be interesting to see how this goes down.

Think that Miami job is pretty good. Also, the UCF opening is underrated as well.

Saban on the Richt firing: “I don’t know what the world is coming to in our profession.”
