DETROIT -- Lions defensive end Devin Taylor said he didn't believe he grabbed Aaron Rodgers' face mask during the final timed play of his team's 27-23 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.

The face mask call gave the Packers one last untimed play -- along with 15 extra yards -- that resulted in Rodgers' Hail Mary touchdown pass to tight end Richard Rodgers, giving the Packers the win with no time left.

"It's whatever the refs call," Taylor said. "I can't control whatever they decide. I can just play ball, keep going."
Asked whether he touched Aaron Rodgers' face mask, Taylor said, "I didn't believe I touched it."

Taylor said the referees didn't explain to him what he did, just that they called a face mask on him.

Rodgers was resolute in his opinion that the correct judgment was made on the play.

"It was a face mask," he said. "I was looking for the flag afterwards. I don't really flop any calls. That was a legit face mask."

Lions defensive end Jason Jones, who was on the field with Taylor at the time, also said, "I didn't think it was" a face mask violation but that he would have to see the replay.
Lions coach Jim Caldwell didn't think it was a face mask, either.

"Didn't think it was, but because you don't think it was or I don't think it was, it was called," Caldwell said. "Therefore, it is, and we just got to find a way to make a play."
NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said that call, though, would be made almost every time.

Dean Blandino @DeanBlandino

Hand up to the mask, quick grab with finger and head gets turned. At full speed official is going to make that call almost every time.

Article 14 of the NFL rulebook states: "No player shall grasp and control, twist, turn, push, or pull the facemask of an opponent in any direction.

"If a player grasps an opponent's facemask, he must immediately release it. If he does not immediately release it and controls his opponent, it is a foul."

Either way, Jones said that when he saw the flag on the field, which gave Green Bay the extra play, it definitely affected the Lions.

"It's always something, man," Jones said. "We play our butts off and ... that flag kinda killed us right there. We didn't make enough plays."

Really tough call....One finger touched the face mask, but he pulls him down with his collar.
Probably should not have been called but at full speed with the ump having a bad angle, understandable.

Funny, the defenders reaction after the play knew what the flag was for. And Rodgers sold it cause he probably thought it wasn't a face mask.
Both guys fibbing a bit with those answers.

And still all the Lions had to do was defend one of the easier plays in football to defend and they would have won.

Doesn't matter if he grabbed it, it was hands to the face of a QB, same thing happened not less than 10 days ago in another NFL game

I've seen lesser offenses to a QB this year that were also called, this one just happened to be followed up by a fluke/miracle play, if Detroit knocks that hail mary down like they should have end of story.

And where was Calvin Johnson during this play? He should have been standing on the goal line ready to go east or west

Nfl football will be a better product in years to come. It is amazing that the game of football still needs clarification and adjustments to just make the game correct. But now that it is so analyzed they need more ways to clarify things. They got to figure out what is a catch and what is not this offseason.

Is this Blandino's explanation of the rule?? I initially thought it was a quick, but certain facemask when I watched the game but now that I see this interpretation I'm confused now.

If a player is allowed to "immediately release" the facemask without getting called for a foul, how did this play not fall into that category as he only grabbed it for a split second and brought Rodgers down by the shoulder pad instead?

Lol because blandino is a crooked fuck working for league officials. That is the definition of the rule. But this guy will back up a zebra if he took a shit on jj watts helmet. He would say it was legal.

You can touch the facemask. They got rid of the 5 yard rule. It was the wrong call no question about it but it was tough to tell while watchibg live. Regardless they will give the benefit of the doubt to the losing team...the NFL always wants it to go down to the wire.

They have had 3 games in a row end on the last play. Lol do you think that is just a coincidence? No.

as badly as I want to say thats not a facemask... you can't hate the call. there's no 5 or 15 yard penalty anymore, you either did or you didn't. and looks like he did with one finger -- and i was rooting for the lions
