Former Raiders coach and broadcaster John Madden recently underwent open-heart surgery, the NFL announced Thursday.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer is currently resting in his home after being released from the hospital Wednesday. The open-heart surgery was required in order to repair blockages, per the release.

"I spoke to John yesterday," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "He sounds great, but is frustrated about being on injured reserve for the time being. He is anxious to return to action soon doing the important work he does for our game. He's a tremendous fountain of ideas and we can't wait to get him back. We are all pleased to know that John's procedure was successful and wish him a speedy recovery."

Although Madden is no longer broadcasting or coaching, he's still involved in the NFL's efforts to enhance the game. He is a co-chair with Ronnie Lott on the NFL Player Safety Advisory Panel and is chair of the Coaches Subcommittee to the Competition Committee.

Ha. A guy that bragged about eating a shitload of fat having open heart surgery. He was not a so so announcer. He was horrible . Guy is only known for a video game.

When he was in the Booth .. and he had to explain a play , it would take him 5 minutes .. you kind of fell a sleep

For his era, he was one of the top HC's around.

Caliendo's impression was great on Madden. And I find Caliendo annoying as hell. Probably because Mike and Mike act like he is the funniest guy around with their fake laughs. It was even better how Madden hated it. You definitely take yourself too seriously if you get offended by a guy doing a good impression of you.

My memories of Madden talking are him going on a 15 minute rant on what an ultimate Thanksgiving feast is and then him saying something like " you see, they need to get 8 yards for a first down on 2nd and 8, if they don't get 8 yards on these next 2 plays, they will be forced to punt".. Hahaha

I picture him as a fun 7th grade football coach.. "Boom, he's on his back" Madden video game. If Al Davis hired him, he can't be any good.
