Lets say I intentionally did not pay my car insurance and still have health insurance. If I am in a car accident, and require medical treatment would I not be treated or would my health insurance cover this? I understand policies are different but we are just talking hypothetically.

A rule of thumb I was once told by an insurance guy was this. If you have something that requires an insurance claim and within that claim is something else that can have its own policy, the original policy will not cover it. For example, your car is in your garage and your house burns down. The home owners will not cover the car, it's on the car insurance. I'm not an insurance man but always seems that this rule of thumb works. That and insurance companies are crooks anyway just looking for a way to get out of everything.

Razor back is correct about car scenario - no sure how your medical insurance would work covering your car accident, my guess would be no coverage. In my Part of Canada we have accident benefits so you would be automatically covered in the scenario you painted.

Razorback - Did you have a claim that went poorly or know someone that had a bad claim, that makes you have that attitude?

You would be treated regardless I believe which isn't the exact answer you seek. They would sort out the insurance afterwards and keep you stable or admit you depending on the insurance. :smoking:

I also think if you really want to make this scenario sticky, add a passenger to it. Then you will be seeing MANY lawyers knocking on your door step serving you papers

Been handling auto insurance claims for 19 years. Yes, your health insurance should be involved with your medical bills, but all plans are different. Keep in mind the reason you are required to carry auto insurance has nothing to do with your well being; it's being able to cover anyone else you injure in an accident and cover property damage you cause in an accident. If you are uninsured and are at fault in an accident, and in some states that can mean 1%, the damaged party will be able to come after you personally for repayment, as well as taking action with the DMV to suspend your license.
