<!-- width: 615 --><!-- height: 346 -->The Cleveland Browns are staying in Ohio for their next head coach.
The Browns are hiring Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson as the successor to Mike Pettine, NFL Media columnist Michael Silver reported.
"They made me feel comfortable," Jackson told Silver.
Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslem skipped the NFL's Los Angeles relocation vote on Tuesday to lure Jackson, his No. 1 target in the coaching search. Jackson was also a candidate for the 49ers and Giants, but the Browns offered "significant personnel control," NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
Jackson went 8-8 with an undermanned 2011 Raiders squad in his lone head coaching stint, but took backlash for orchestrating a Carson Palmer trade that paid few dividends for Oakland.
He ultimately landed in Cincinnati as assistant secondary and special teams coach in 2012, teaching defense for the first time in his career. He then worked his way back up the coaching ladder, assuming coordinator duties after Jay Gruden was hired by the Redskins in 2014.
Already well respected for his work with wide receivers and running backs, Jackson earned praised for elevating Andy Dalton into the MVP discussion and getting backup AJ McCarron ready to play meaningful games in a playoff race.
"We're happy to help Hue," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis recently told Silver. "We know how rough it was for him four years ago, when he basically went through hell, and how hard it was for him to work his way out of that. He has been a great addition to our staff for four years, in ways that people don't even understand.
"Now, he's getting the attention he deserves, and we're very happy for him. We want to support him in any way we can."
Although Jackson is known as a charismatic leader and a "player's coach," he also gets high marks for toughness and offensive strategy.
"I wasn't even playing in 2011 when Hue was head coach, and you don't always feel a part of things. But Hue made it fun every single time," Browns quarterback/wide receiver Terrelle Pryor said earlier this week. "It would be great choice, I can tell you that."
Considering his success with Cincinnati's quarterbacks, it will be interesting to see if Jackson believes he can salvage the future of Johnny Manziel. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports the hire will trigger the end and the team will move on from Manziel.
Silver, a close friend of Jackson, stated Wednesday on NFL Network that he couldn't imagine any coach "hitching his wagon" to Manziel right now.
With the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Jackson has the opportunity to handpick the next face of the franchise. He has close ties to the Bay Area, where Cal's Jared Goff starred in college.
This is a strong hire for an unstable Browns organization in need of direction.

Did they interview a white head coach? That is just discrimination if they didn't.
Great hire by Cleve, if they let him actually Coach, unlike what happened in Oakland. And Yes, Vlad, you can take your hood off, they interviewed White candidates.

Flipping to the defensive side of the ball the Browns are interested in, and have interviewed, New England defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Patricia is on the younger side for an NFL coach at only 41 years old but has quickly made a mark on Bill Belichick and the Patriots staff. New England is the only NFL team Patricia has ever worked for, working as a position coach on both sides of the ball before becoming the defensive coordinator in 2012. New England assistants have not had the most success in their transition to head coaches, the Browns understand this first hand from their time under former Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel in the mid 2000’s. Patricia however is different due in large part to his background. He has a degree in aeronautical engineering and has worked in that industry. By all accounts Patricia is one the most intelligent men in the NFL and with the Browns transition to a more analytical approach Patricia could mesh seamlessly. Not many NFL coaches can boast about their mental chops the way Patricia can.
While at this point Jackson and Patricia appear to be the top candidates, the Browns have brought other coaches for interviews. Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was interviewed by the Browns this week as well. McDermott as lead the Panthers defense since 2011 and they have finished in the top ten in total defense every year since. In addition to McDermott the Browns have brought in former Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone, Dallas Cowboys secondary coach Jerome Henderson, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, and Adam Gase before he was hired to be the coach of the Miami Dolphins.

A black head coach and the Browns. I see nothing but greatness in their future.

This should be a done deal by year 2 or 3 leading to a top 5 pick to parlay with their other top 5 picks in 2016 and 2017. I really hope they sign RG3. That will be fun to see. We need a black head coach/ stupid running qb combo.

The Browns are about as stupid as the Raiders were under Al Davis.

Amazing...So much wealth but so little common sense.

I have no opinion as to whether or not Jackson is a good choice

I have a strong opinion about the Browns being a bad choice

Their ownership is a mess, the organization is rudderless

They have a "Chief Strategy Officer" now though...

I swear they think they are The Navy or something.
